What a great weekend! Headed up to Manitowoc with @tender_loving_jer And @penguinsays hoping to find missing evidence to clear Steven Avery #makingamurderer but fell short, road tripping through Wisconsin exploring sideways barns and roadside backyard sales, then off to Milwaukee for a #pabstblueribbon tour were I broke Jim the owner of PBR’s facilities iPhone in an extreme fanboy attack for a photo opportunity, road ended #millerbeer for a sweet tour of the facility. Milwaukee is one of my favorite rustic American cities and I will be returning here soon.

From what we know about wrongful convictions, many of the fathers included in these numbers are likely innocent. Your support has helped us free some of them, and they can celebrate fatherhood today. 1. CIP exoneree Rafael Madrigal’s sons were three and five years old when Rafael was convicted of a murder he didn’t commit. He was exonerated in 2009 after nine years of wrongful incarceration. “I wanted to be home to my family, my baby and I couldn't do anything about it," Rafael said in a recent article. “He would write to his children two to three times a week just so they wouldn't forget him,” the article says. 2. As an innocent man serving time for an attempted rape committed by someone else, Uriah Courtney was not allowed to see his son during the eight years he was in prison. After Uriah was exonerated in 2013, we were able to capture the first time he held his son in almost a decade. “Today I get to hug my boy for the first time in all them years,” Uriah says through a smile. 3. Alan Gimenez was wrongfully incarcerated for 24 years. During that time, his first-born daughter grew, without her father, into an adult. “I spent more than half of my life [in prison]. The worst punishment of all is I didn’t have the chance to develop that father-daughter bond with my daughter,” Alan said during a presentation with CIP. Now that he’s free, Alan can finally form that relationship. Rafael, Uriah, and Alan can be with their children on #fathersday because of supporters like you. Thank you. Dan goes down to the sea again! Dan Payne of the #freshwaterfive was released from prison today after serving 9 years for a crime he maintains he did not commit. His appeal is pending before a single judge. #5men104years He says: “I have missed the sea so much. I reckon it’s saltwater running in my veins. I am looking forward to getting home, cuddling my mum and dad and having some good food. I can’t believe my dog has lasted this long but she will be there to greet me. I have had 9 years of my life stolen from me for something I didn’t do. I may have been released from prison but I am still not free. Only the Court of Appeal can put this right now.”

1. Kenneth Marsh, 21 years wrongfully incarcerated 2. Alan Gimenez, 24 years wrongfully incarcerated 3. Suzanne Johnson, 20 years wrongfully incarcerated and counting Many individuals, including Kenneth Marsh, Alan Gimenez, and Suzanne Johnson (will remains wrongfully incarcerated prison to this day) have been accused of shaking an infant to death despite modern research that supports alternative innocent explanations. On July 12, we’re hosting a panel discussion with Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma (SBS/AHT) experts who will discuss how to defend an SBS/AHT case. They will cover how SBS/AHT research has changed since the hypothesis was popularized decades ago, how to identify cracks in the prosecution’s case, and tips for advocating against SBS/AHT accusations. If you are a defense practitioner in Southern California, you should attend this program. It’s free, and offers 6 GEN MCLE credits. See more info and register at californiainnocenceproject.org/sbscle2019. #xonr8

🔍True Crime in Conversation with John Douglas! . . I had the honour to attend an event in which John Douglas, Robert Kolker, David Wilson and the lawyers from Making a Murderer gave an interesting insights in various cases they have either solved or are still struggling with. . . . Particularly interesting was the case of Long Island where the police discovered the bodies of murdered prostitutes but are yet unable to solve the case or have a solid suspect. It is a true live, mystery case as those involved are everything from suspicious to uncooperative yet elusive. . . . John Douglas shared a lot of stories involving the serial killers that he interviewed. He explained how some of them were more comfortable sharing their crimes than others and that having his badge with him at all times was like they all appreciated. Douglas coined the term serial killer and he was a pioneer in criminal profiling. . . . If you want to read a more detailed article you can find it on my blog. . . . The coffee mug Kimberly Long is holding in this photo says, "6.10.16." That’s the date (three years ago today) Kim was freed after serving more than seven years wrongfully incarcerated. Now that she’s free, Kim often says that she lives every day to the fullest. Happy three years of freedom, Kim! #xonr8
