I just had the best time sharing this beautiful book and project with my son’s first grade class! ✨✨✨ Mae Among the Stars is based on the life of Mae Jemison, the first African American female astronaut. We made our own galaxy art with white crayons and bleeding tissue paper... we have to wait until tomorrow to see how they all turned out, but I’m sure they’re going to be gorgeous! ✨ This month’s @kidlitpicks theme is trailblazers- people like Mae Jemison who have paved the way for others. To find other beautiful books like this one, follow @kidlitbookbits @homegrownreader and @alittlebookhabit. And tag your own great finds with #kidlitpicks_trailblazers to join in the last few days of fun this month! . . . #maeamongthestars @roda_ahmed @stasiaburrington
Interactive read alouds are my absolute FAVE. My students learn not only vital reading strategies, but we discuss important themes and topics as well. I have been starting to organize my notes into actual lesson plans and sticky notes—link in profile for this resource! Many more will be coming soon. Last week, we read “Mae Among the Stars” (if you don’t yet have this—get it), and discussed what it means to persevere. Next week, we will dive deeper into the book and start an extension writing activity with it. 🚀📖
“If you dream it, believe in it, and work hard for it, anything is possible.” This week @SHE_School and #millwoodelementary we read the wonderful #maeamongthestars by @roda_ahmed . It’s a lovely story about #maejamison , the first African American female in space. The littles loved it and had so much fun building and creating 🚀, 🌟, and 🌎!
Mae Among The Stars is inspired by the story of Mae Jemison turning her dream of going to space into a reality. This story follows Mae’s childhood dream of seeing Earth from space. Even though her teachers discouraged her, her parents championed her ambitions telling her “if you can dream it, if you believe it and work hard for it, anything is possible”. In 1987 Mae Jemison was accepted into NASA’s astronaut training program and was the first female African American astronaut to go to space in 1992. In addition to being an astronaut she was also a medical doctor and a dancer. We want to thank Roda Ahmed, and our Friends of the Vancouver Community Library for an out of this world event! Roda shared her life story, and also the story of Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space. After the stories she answered questions, signed books, and joined families for crafts, and activities. She even ventured into a nebula! #maeamongthestars#kidlit#authorsofinstagram#vancouverwa#publiclibrary
#dearcharlieandchase, Follow your heart, your dreams and your passion always. I love you 😘 If you dream it, if you believe it and work hard for it, anything is possible. - Favorite line from this very inspiring book. #maeamongthestars
Reading this one again, because of Nadia's obsessions with going into space. We've watched a little video about Mae Jemison on YouTube a few times, and Nadia says "Awww" and gasps delightedly every time she sees her. I think we've found her hero. #maeamongthestars#maejemison#big dreams
My daughter has grown increasingly fond of airplanes since she was able to spot them in the sky. She now is obsessed with the museum of flight and tells me she wants to fly planes and be an astronaut. The challenge however remains, how do I foster this love of hers? And tell her she can fly planes when many examples and images are of men flying planes and women being airline attendants? Thank god for this book I found “Mae amongst the Stars” because when I read it to her I can see the stars in her eyes and she is reassured that ’anything is possible’. Great read! #alma_grace #maejemison#maeamongthestars
4 days until Roda Ahmed visits, to share her tremendous book, Mae Among the Stars! "In the mural you can see Alan B. Shepard, Eileen Collins and Sally Ride but not Mae Jemison. This is why I wrote #maeamongthestars . I want kids to grow up knowing who Mae Jemison is. I want to add her to the stories we tell our children." -Roda Ahmed 📷:@rodaworld #authorvisit#vanwa#librariesofinstagram#maejemison
This picture book is based on the real life story of Mae Jamison, the first African American woman to travel in space. It’s a simple but inspiring read with just the right amount of text and engaging pictures for the young readers.
7 days until we get to meet Roda Ahmed! Author of beloved children's book, Mae Among the Stars will be visiting for a special after hours program this Saturday, January 12th at 6:30. 🍭2018 #kidlit Favorites 🍭 . We read probably hundreds of new-to-us picture books this year, but these four stuck out and were beloved by both my kids (3 and 6) and me. Each of these books were brought to me to be read again and again and I never got tired of any of them. Those two things are the true test of a great picture book in my mind . . They all have in common: exquisite illustrations that are bright and engaging, lots of surprises for eyes and ears, playfulness, and the joy of kids just being kids. If you have little ones in your life, I cannot recommend these highly enough . . Did you have any fav picture books this year? . . . #maeamongthestars#christianrobinson#julianisamermaid#thyraheder#picturebooks#kidsbookstagram#weneeddiversebooks

This picture book written by my friend @rodaworld is a beautiful and beautifully illustrated story inspired by the life of Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to travel in space. It honors an amazing person while affirming kid readers’ dreams—to believe in and work toward them, no matter what and despite obstacles. Dreamy illustrations by @stasiaburrington. ✨✨
I got so many messages in response to my stories-rant about gendered Halloween costumes, I wanted to share with you the story of meeting this young lady. We were out on our little town’s trick-or-treat event, when I saw this girl wearing the same astronaut suit as Ellis. She was just as excited as I was about it (😅), and immediately started asking questions about Ellis & her costume, and telling us about hers. Her name is Haley, and she’s 10 years old, and she wants to be an Astro-physicist when she grows up. She was dressed as Christa McAuliffe, one of the seven crew members that died on the Challenger in 1986 (more than 20 years before Haley was born). She went on to tell me a little about what happened on the Challenger, and about Christa. I told her that Ellis’ costume was inspired by Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to go to space (& the beautiful children’s book our friend @rodaworld wrote about Mae’s story). Haley’s passion & enthusiasm about a female scientist she looks up to was so inspiring for me. I’ll be sharing some wonderful resources & companies working to combat children’s gender bias in my stories today (including a link to Mae Jemison’s story) if you’re interested. // #amypoehlersmartgirls#femalescientist#nomoreprincesses#genderbias#ellisflannery#maeamongthestars#cakeletcostumes
We recently picked up #maeamongthestars from the library, and found out that today is #maejemison’s birthday! Naomi insisted that we needed to celebrate. Domi built a space station and we all drew space pictures. Happy birthday, Dr. Jemison!
My nephew has a space-themed bedroom (my dad even built him a rocket ship bookcase!) so for his 3rd birthday I got him these books about #space (tap for author/illustrator info)— MAE AMONG THE STARS, a #biography of #maejemison, is one of my favorite books published this year. For the others, I found a list of #picturebooks compiled by #emilylakdawalla on the @planetarysociety website. It was written in November 2017 and the books (including fiction and nonfiction) are organized by child age. I found it super helpful! This lovely book is nominated for Talk👋 and it is inspired by the life of Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to travel in space. It shows us what life might have been like for little Mae as she dreams big, reaches for the stars and shares her dreams with others! 💫🌎🌛@rodaworld @stasiaburrington #maeamongthestars#clelbellawards#talk#rodaahmed#stasiaburrington
