#toolboxtuesday Remind has been one of the greatest tools in the my toolbox for the past few school years. It’s pretty much text messaging without using a phone number, is accessible via phone or computer, and is #ferpa compliant. Many teachers use it to send assignments to their students and important messages to their parents. As a School Social Worker, the app has allowed me to quickly and efficiently communicate with my parents. I have been able to send information in mass like programs for credit recovery, food assistance, and housing. For individuals, it’s allowed me to verify addresses and times for home visits, answer quick questions that don’t require long conversations, update parents on how their kids are doing in group, etc. As of January 28, 2019, #verizon will be charging our families to receive text through #remindapp. This is very disappointing and I am hoping they reconsider as Remind has helped break down many barriers and help streamline communication between those in education and parents/guardians. #verizon, you’d be doing a disservice to millions! #notspam#reversethefee

Who would’ve known a couple of pieces of paper would mean so much to me? 10 years ago I was a senior in high school who hadn’t a clue what she wanted to do with her life. I’ve accomplished some pretty big things since then and I couldn’t be more proud of myself. . One thing I know to be true. If God puts a dream on your heart, it’s there for a reason. For so many years I struggled to know what my purpose was. I felt like I was just going through the motions but God had a plan and then one day it all came together and just clicked. . Since the first of the year, I’ve been centered around goal setting. Not only in my personal life but my professional one too. I’ve reflected on my past to help me figure out where I wanna go in the future. . I’ve been asking my clients where they were a year ago, where they are now, and where they wanna be in 10 years. (We call that the miracle question so to speak in the world of therapy.) Self-examination as you would call it. Looking at your life and figuring out what needs to change in order to get you to a bigger and better future. Dreaming BIG, and then coming up with a game plan to get you there. After all, a dream put into action becomes a goal. ✨ #msw#lmsw#socialworker#dreams#believeinyourself#goalsetting#accomplishment#rolltide
Does anyone else get excited when Monday rolls around? No? Just me, huh? . Strangely, most hate Monday’s, but for me, I love them- always have. New week, new start, brand new is how I see it. . Spring semester has commenced 🥳 🙄 #bittersweetfeeling Exciting because it gets me closer to graduation and bitter because of all the homework that’s ahead. . I’m looking at it as glass half full! . Things I do to be organized: . 🌟 Planner: I use different color pens/highlighters & prioritize by color coding . . 🌟Dry erase board: I wrote down all my important dates to keep me focused and inspired . . 🌟Started on my homework Sunday night before classes officially began #imanerd . What do you do to stay organized? #organization#gradstudent#msw#sw#lmsw#lcsw#therapist#studytips #
When you are trying to develop your skills in trauma treatment I think having good training and people who want to see you do the best work possible is important. One training I got along my journey that was practice transforming is ...EMDR Integrative Attachment Trauma Protocol for Children (IATP-C) offered by @atci_ne I highly recommend their training if you are working with children and I still use the skills for working with adults. Can't say enough! #traumatherapy#traumatherapist#lmft#lpc#lmsw#lp#therapistlife
The goal for 2019 will be to simply REACH. Our action will start with how we reach, who we reach, and how far our reach goes. -------------------------------------------------------------- Reach for change. Reach for opportunity. Reach for greater.
Welcome all! I want to take a moment to introduce myself, both to long time friends and my many new recent followers. ♡ ♡ My name is Darian. I'm a BSW-level Social Worker currently in an Advanced Standing program for my Master's of Science in Social Work with Columbia University in the City of New York with a specialty in Health, Healthcare and Disability Policy, as well as Substance Use. I Chair my school's Substance Abuse and Recovery Caucus as well. At the moment, I'm involved with 3 #research projects soon up for publication. I'm originally from Chicago but thanks to my #military service in the United States #airforce, I've traveled the country and world before being medically retired in November 2010 after returning home from Iraq. For the past few years, I have been involved in fighting substance use disorder in Illinois, specifically #opioids (and now NY), giving keynote addresses across the state, appearing in local newspapers and on the news, and helping my elected officials draft and implement legislation. I've worked at the city, county, state, and national level, advocating for a vulnerable population who does not have a strong enough voice of their own. As a #disabled veteran myself, I'm also very dedicated to helping my brothers- and sisters-in-arms who suffer from mental health and/or SUDs. I have an 11yr old son, aptly named after myself, whom also struggles with mental health. Together, we fight it day by day as father and son. ♡ ♡ Your turn! Feel free to introduce yourself (don't be shy, lol). I want to know a little about you, particularly if you're a Social Worker, #psychologist, #psychiatrist, #counselor, #coach, in #sobriety, or in the helping profession in general. Let's build some connections together and help one another make it through this thing called life. ♡ ♡ #socialwork#socialworker#bsw#msw#phd#lcsw#lmsw#cadc#mentalhealth#mentalillness#mentalhealthawareness#substanceabuse#reducethestigma#policy#legislation
Any Social Worker, student, researcher, parent, etc. will tell you that #coffee is a MUST! LOL. I'm usually very occupied 7 days a week, from awaking to bedtime. My days are long and strenuous (yet very productive) and coffee definitely helps keep me going when the going gets tough. Today I decided to update my coffee machine. My previous version did the 12-cup carafe and K-cups. The newest addition now has the capability to brew single-serve grounds. I prefer to buy beans and grind them myself each morning, rotating flavors, darkness, strength, and even region of the world. I was very excited about this purchase today! I specifically bought this model because it allows me to prepare everything at night, set a timer, and a fresh pot will be ready when I wake. This will definitely get it's use while I complete grad school over the next four months, and beyond! ☆ ☆ #socialwork#socialworker#bsw#msw#phd#lcsw#lmsw#cadc#mentalhealth#mentalillness#mentalhealthawareness#substanceabuse#reducethestigma#policy#legislation#ivyleaguestudent#chicago#newyork#foodporn#foodphotography
In order to not only stay proficient in your field but to continue to learn and grow as a professional, reading and expanding your knowledge base is crucial. As a Social Worker that focuses on substance use disorder, methods, research, and ideologies are guided by both the history of drugs (#Illicit and #prescription) as well as the current state of affairs. This field is forever evolving and varies from state to state, even town to town. The #warondrugs has a long history in our country, the history usually not factually known, and has had drastic effects on communities, families and individuals. I find it pertinent to read and learn as much as I can not only because it is my personal passion but because it is a literal life-or-death situation. Even with classes, my internship, and research, I go through at least one book per week. When I learn something new or of interest, I find more books to dive into the topic further. I'll be done with my current book tonight so I just ordered three more! #knowledgeispower ☆ ☆ #socialwork#socialworker#bsw#msw#phd#lcsw#lmsw#cadc#mentalhealth#mentalillness#mentalhealthawareness#substanceabuse#reducethestigma#policy#legislation#ivyleaguestudent#chicago#newyork
"Meet people where they ARE, not where you WANT them to be." As a Social Worker that focuses on substance use disorders, this is a very important concept. Going into detox/recovery/treatment with the mindset that your client is in fact a "#Student" rather than a "#Patient" is the best way to approach addictions. Very few inherently know what resources are available, how to navigate cravings, or where to seek out support when needed. It's a learning process that takes place both in and out of your office. You cannot rush sobriety. Instead, meeting them where they're at in that point in time is crucial for the process to be effective and lasting. Always approach setbacks from a non-judgmental standpoint, don't scold or criticize. Offer support and alternatives, be patient, and continue to assure them #sobriety is possible, even though relapses can (and often do) occur. ☆ ☆ #socialwork#socialworker#bsw#msw#phd#lcsw#lmsw#cadc#mentalhealth#mentalillness#mentalhealthawareness#substanceabuse#reducethestigma#policy#legislation#ivyleaguestudent#chicago#newyork

It’s Mental Health Friday! As an avid social media user I see a number of people post video/pictures/statements that may need more reflection with a close friend, partner or provider then relying on likes/comments to sooth them. Take a self evaluation and see if you that person. #sheculturewellness#wellnessblogger#selfcare#mentalhealth#lmsw
Don’t let that be you.. year after year barely making ends meet; always in survival mode and not really living; being accustomed to mediocrity and not striving for greatness; listening to people who are only trying to discourage you, instead of pushing you harder to reach your goals; too content with your current lifestyle and afraid to take risks; believing in “fear,” instead of that little voice telling you that you can do anything you put your mind to. All you need is a little bit of #faith, and a little bit of #hope to know that your current situation is only temporary! You are destined for greatness! If only you apply yourself a little more; work a little harder; work a little smarter; be a little more determined; and remember #diamonds are created under pressure! 💎⛏ - Dr. Dominique S. . #thursdaymotivation#inspiration#motivation#beencouraged#alwaysevolving#boss#dreambig#aimhigh#seebelieveachieve#lcsw#lmsw#dsw#msw#bsw#socialworker#socialwork#dominiques18
