A few weeks ago the lovely @pipwilcoxceramics, a beautiful middle aged woman, posted a photo of herself and her hands. Stating it was about time our feeds showed some real (middle aged) hands and faces as to all the over-styled, younger looking and photoshopped skin Instagram is filled with. Just to balance things out and show that ‘real’ is beautiful too. No matter what age your skin is, what scars, wrinkles or spots left behind by life itself. She asked if more people felt this way, that they could show this by posting their reality and normalcy in their feed or stories. This has truly awoken a large community and there even is a hashtag now #middleyearsmonday ☺️Please read Pip’s original post, she’s very articulate and probably makes more sense than my rambling over here. So here are my very real hands, next year they’ve been with me for forty years. They are very important to me, even more so since I have become a maker last year. These hands are literally my every day tools and I love them for it. When I quit my old job it was because ‘I wanted to work with my hands’ and now I do! Every day they are covered in mud, water, glaze or sanding dust and it shows. My hands have poor blood circulation because of a minor condition which causes dryness (among other things) and I knew this new job wasn’t going to improve my hand situation. If you zoom in you can clearly see what my dry hands look like... and I’m not ashamed of them. Even though I’d rather had them smooth and silky. These are my hands and they have brought me so much and I’m proud to be able to work with them! . . . #handmadework#workingwithyourhands#handmadewithlove#lovemyhands#dirtyjobs#ceramicist#maker#makershands#minimalismo#pureandsimple#keramiek#keramik#middleyears#makersmark#buysmall#makermonday#makermovement#liveauthentically#keepingitreal#makershands#ceramics#lifeofapotter#meetthemaker#pottery
When I was younger, this phone represented what - for me - was basically the epitome of adulthood 💁🏼♀️ As a 10th grader in Minnesota (you know, back when cell phones were “only for emergencies”) I dreamt of owning this brick beauty when I grew up and personalising it (obviously) with a colourful case, gem-studded keypad, and perfect identifying ringtone ✨ My girlfriends and I regularly discussed how our customized Nokia phones would be the perfect accessory to our stylish wardrobes as powerful professionals. Adulting at its finest 👯♀️ I had no idea that Nokia was in Finland; to be honest, I’m pretty sure I just thought it was a brand name and had no idea it was an actual place 🤷🏼♀️ But here I am, half a lifetime later. I’m typing away in my iPhone and I’m pretty confident this mural holds the only brick phone within reach. I literally live right next door to Nokia -the city. My 16-year-old self couldn’t even think to imagine any of it. Life can be crazy. Sometimes our dreams are replaced with things we couldn’t have even imagined, and sometimes we find oursleves in places we never even knew existed. But that’s the beauty, isn’t it?
Our video feature with @britandco and @barillaus is live! 🎥🎉 Did you catch it yet? We are thankful for such a cool opportunity for @jess.liao to share on her love for lettering and community and the importance of self care. — Link in bio. 🤗✍🏼💕
Within each of us there is the heart of a lion, the courage to simply be who & what we are regardless of others opinions or our own fears. Sometimes this courage has been buried beneath years of shaming that may have been so implicit or insidious that we breathed it in, unaware of how it separated us from knowing our own beauty of being. May we each know our own beauty & right to be today. May we drop down into the heart of the lion within & say to shame, when it rears it’s head, “Not today!”?
