🌟Gratitude as a form of Metabolism 🌟 . . . I’ve been thinking about gratitude and the purpose it serves. And I appreciated Dr. Stella’s @drstellac recent post on the ways she incorporates gratitude into her life. Many people keep gratitude journals or have other practices. •  But what does gratitude actually do? •  I think of gratitude as a form of metabolism. We all have a certain level at which we can’t absorb anymore. When good things are happening in your life, there’s a way that you can become numb to them. Kind of like how you can get addicted to likes on social media. When you first start out you’re thrilled with 10 likes, then it’s a hundred, then you need 1,000 to get that same rush. •  The same thing happens in daily life. You work your ass off to buy your dream home. And after living in it for a few months, it’s routine. You’re ready for bigger and better. Why does this happen? Partly because we become habituated. But also we don’t spend enough time *digesting* all that we do have on a regular basis. We buy into the allusion that the next thing around the corner is going to fix all our problems or take away our insecurities. •  And when you don’t digest, you get full and bloated and cranky. You can’t take anything more in. This is where gratitude comes in. Because if you don’t pay attention to what you have and actively appreciate it - you’ll just keep collecting more experiences or things but won’t ever feel fulfilled by then. •  Only when you fully acknowledge the wealth you have in life can you be ready for more. And a funny thing happens when you start appreciating and digesting all the good in your life. You stop caring as much about getting that next thing. Get out there. Connecting with nature can relieve stress and is a excellent place to get exercise. Beats being in a stuffy gym doing the motions. When we find activities we enjoy, we’ll do them more. Movement, in any form you like, is medicine.  Today I took a kayak tour of North Lake Tahoe. It was one of those things I’ve wanted to do but was kind of scared to do. Lake Tahoe can get choppy in the afternoon and there’s a lot of boaters making wakes. I’ve done a much longer stand up paddle board tour in the morning before the lake gets rough and I rocked it. My rules for SUPing are to always go first thing in the morning when the water is like glass. So taking this afternoon tour was outside my comfort zone but it was the only time it was offered. Calm seas never make a skilled sailor, right? The kayaking made me nauseous so I think I prefer my paddle board. But I’m still glad I put on my big girl UPF yoga leggings and faced my fear of rough water. It was a nice core workout and the views were spectacular.  It’s good to get outside our comfort zones and do things that scare us. I’m working on that right now and I’ve learned I never regret doing things that scare me. Maybe the opposite is true for many people. We can all change that self-talk conversation of fear/anxiety into one of being excited to do ____________. It’s a great exercise to try with kids, too. How to Work 5 Million Days in a Row (WITHOUT GOUGING YOUR EYES OUT) 💪  One thing I love doing is talking about the dangers of over-commitment, and then doing it anyway. Like saying yes to working five million days in a row. And staying late. And still showing up early. And not eating real meals. And all that jazz you lie to your mother on the phone about, etc. 💪 So if you are like me and often face long stretches of work, here are some of the ways You can take it from being an exhausting experience to a rewarding one: 💪 1. Use it to hold yourself accountable. Like if I am working 10 days at a time, that means I am going to take the train home 10 days in a row. Which means I have no excuse to meditate, or free write, or whatever, for 10 days in a row. 💪 2. See it as a chance to NOT do something. Since you are working it will be easier to not do something not good for you right? I.e. stalking your ex’s Instagram or eating four pints of ice cream just because you can). For my day job, I am not supposed to have my phone with me. So I see work days as a great opportunity to spend hours away from my phone without even trying. 💪 3. Use it as an excuse to drink way too much coffee. Oh yeah. Venti soy latte that is a $6 demon for my health, here I come. 💪 4. Use it to socialize. Ask your coworkers  questions about themselves, pretend that you really want to be with these people. Then you won’t feel bad for avoiding all human contact on your days off. 💪 5. Use it to wear the killer outfits you never have an excuse for. Stun everyone by totally overdressing for two weeks straight. 💪 From today’s blog post
Say “aloe” to my little friend:) 🌵Picked up this beautiful plant @chezfleurca today. Aloe has traditionally been a healing plant with many anecdotal purposes. There is little evidence to back up these claims but the little we have shows promise. Aloe Vera contains two substances used in health care products — clear gel and yellow latex. The gel is primarily used topically in creams and ointments to treat burns & other inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis and even acne. It is considered safe. We have the most evidence for wound healing, particularly after a burn, primarily due to it’s anti-inflammatory properties. Studies, though small, show that aloe promotes healing up to 8-9 days faster than placebo or other topical creams. With acne, the healing effect might occur because aloe increases skin absorption so when used with other medicated acne products, aloe can possibly increase their efficacy. So topically, evidence both scientifically & anecdotally, supports safety & efficacy. Aloe latex, on the other hand, is taken orally and thought to work as a laxative. There are some safety concerns using it orally, including gut dysfunction, allergy & kidney failure. Oral aloe also interacts negatively with many medications so it is generally not recommended. This time of year, aloe is a soothing balm after sun exposure. Best to prevent a sunburn in the first place but if it does occur, aloe is a quick, easy & effective remedy.
