Veado the surfing deer looking out over the ocean. The sculpture is 20 feet tall and an intriguing piece for sure! I had to google it and found this in @surfermagazine: "a statue commemorating the Legend of Nazaré, a 12th-century tale of a nobleman who was hunting a deer from horseback along the sheer precipice over the beach. Just as he closed in on the deer, a fog obscured the nobleman's view and he became disoriented. In the seconds before his horse careened off the cliff, the nobleman cried out to the Virgin Mary to save him, and his mount's hooves sunk fast in the soil, locking both horse and rider in place."
Went on an awesome road trip to Nazare yesterday! Ever since I saw that video of Garrett McNamara surfing a 78-foot wave there I've wanted to go, so it was a long time dream come true. We didn't get to see any "monster waves" but it was fun anyway, and the waves that were there were definitely impressive to me anyway. The whole area is beautiful, and the beaches go on forever.
