STOP THE WORLD! I WANT TO GET OFF! And we have! A group of us have escaped the craziness of the city to spend four wonderful days at an artist's retreat in the Australian bush two hours from Sydney. This ART Travel Adventures workshop is hosted by myself and artist Ross Laurie. Lazy days spent painting, good food, wine and great company. What more could you want? I'm enjoying experimenting with some fabulous metallic and iridescent paints. #artistretreat#artworkshop#landscapepainting#paintingworkshop
Your painting should say one thing well. This is what skiing slowly through the trees looks like. Constantly choosing your path. Quick, get out of the well worn path. Choose your line. Watch the branch. Sometimes I feel safer in the trees. These obstacles don’t move. That’s also the hazard. The light was flat. The way forward a little blurry. So many quick decisions. Ink on Yupo paper. #vermont#landscapepainting#trees#vermontartist#strattonmountain#strattonmagazine#skihouse
My favourite piece I’ve ever painted; Anakiwa, sits at the head of the Queen Charlotte Sound/Tōtaranui of the Marlborough Sounds, NZ. Commissioned by a good friend to capture a memory of Outward Bound. This piece lives in Alicetown, but really I wish it lived with me. I completed this piece after painting over my original attempt, during an emotionally turbulent time. This piece kept me grounded, transporting me to a peaceful place. -Acrylic paint doing what it does best, bold colour on canvas. Depth and layers.
📢 Summer Exhibition Announcement 📢 Spring may have sprung but we’re already excited for summer, as we’ll be bringing you the largest Ivon Hitchens exhibition in 30 years. The exhibition will cover the entire six decades of Hitchens’ career, from his earliest, lesser known figurative scenes, to his final vibrant abstract paintings. The exhibition promises to be a once in a generation opportunity to consider one of Britain’s most enduringly popular modern painters in a whole new light, and will be supported by a bumper public programme of talks, workshops and events to help you delve deeper into the themes and ideas in Hitchens’ work. For those of you who are local, it’s a chance to explore the beautiful South Downs landscape on our doorstep through the eyes of one of Britain’s most admired modern artists – he painted repeatedly at his home near Petworth and at surrounding locations including Heyshott, Didling, Iping Common and Lavington Common. We are also delighted to be working with photographer Simon Roberts on a new commission of photographic landscape studies exploring what it means to capture the essence of a place. Head over to his Instagram (@simoncroberts) to follow him on shoot in the South Downs locations where Hitchens painted. SAVE THE DATE! Opens 29 June, or book your admission tickets in advance on our website today. #ivonhitchens#exhibitionopenings#sussex#landscapepainting#onyourdoorstep#chichester#pallanthousegallery#modernbritishart#simonroberts#landscape
Introducing my other love, the sky. This series of circular canvases are called “Portals to the Sky.” This one was a gift for my Dad for Fathers Day. It is of Pukerua Bay, the silhouette is of the hillside which looks out of the sea. The toetoe sway in the wind. The sky is intense & surreal. Acrylic on Canvas. NZ landscape is my ultimate muse.
FOR SALE This acrylic on paper plein air was painted while on a commission in the Axarquía mountains, Andalucía, Spain. Blue sky is a strong theme in my work and the combination of colours in this painting is one of my favourites. The painting is mounted and framed in oak (54.5 x 43cm).
