Labour of  love (Pt.2)  ______________________________  For the food lovers, I thought I’d share with you a brief summary of how I prepare and work my steel, as it’s not a cut and paste job!  5🔥) Pre Heat Treatment grinding. This is where the initial bevels are set. The bevel is the large flat area of the knife, before the actual cutting edge. This needs to be made relatively even and equal in mass through the length of the blade so that when I come to the heat treatment, it cools in a more predictable way.  6🔥) Refining grain size. Thermal cycling is done before the hardening, which refines the grain size of the steel, allowing it to be both stronger and to take a finer edge.  7🔥) Hardening and tempering. This is the most critical part in many ways. This is where the shock of the process can often crack a blade (which is extremely frustrating!), but if everything is prepared correctly, the risk of cracking is lessened. Without a hardened steel blade, your knife is more like a spoon. It won’t take a cutting edge – it will roll over and bend. It would essentially be a pointy spoon. This process involves taking the blade to a critical temperature, then quenching it in oil or water to cool it rapidly. This is where the blade is at it’s hardest, but it is also very fragile. It could shatter like glass. So I temper it, by soaking it in a heat (usually around 160-220c) to make it tougher and less fragile.  8🔥) Final grinding. Now that the blade is heat treated (and hopefully not cracked or warped), I can begin the final grinding. But care must be taken not to over heat the blade during grinding, as otherwise it will ruin the hardening process I have just gone through.  9🔥) Hand sanding and etching. In order to carefully finish the surface of the steel, they it is painstakingly sanded by hand. Hand sanding hardened steel can take several hours, but the result is worth it. I seek materials with an interesting story or history, which usually means searching through boxes of obscure finds and being disappointed more often than not!  2🔥) Testing the steel. This involves cutting off smaller pieces and running a complete Heat Treatment process to see if it's suitable. This involves testing for quench medium and tempering, amongst others.  3🔥) Preparing the steel. Removing any surface “crud” and annealing the steel. Annealing involves taking it to a critical temperature & cooling it very slowly (making it soft) - this takes several hours.  4🔥) Forging. Forging allows me complete control of shaping the steel. I can bend, expand, spread and taper the steel to the desired shape. If I were to just grind the material away, it would significantly limit what I could do with the material, and would also waste so much of it.
