[GET-UP TIP] It’s Thursday with another technique tip. In each phase of the get-up, you have a transition sandwiched between two positions, or holds. (We’ll save those holds for another day). Today’s tip addresses a transitional-transition: going from the ‘windmill’ to half-kneeling (or the reverse, from half-kneeling to the windmill). Now many of us learned the 90-ish degree windshield wiper of the back leg (which internally rotates the hip, aligning your femurs for an easy lunge on the way up.) That works great if you have happy knees and a forgiving turf. But what if you don’t? What do you think could happen if you anticipate discomfort or pain in your get-up during this exact transition? You could train lighter than your potential or worse, lose your kettlebell alignment and elbow lockout, and limp away cursing this exquisite move. . Well, if you are willing to live with a shift in your visual focus, we have a knee-friendly solution. Rather than windshield wipe the back leg, you can step out with your front leg—zero pivot on your kneecap required. Either way, you end up with both hips aligned for a strong lunge. The weirdest thing that happens is that you’ll be looking at a different spot and, in a group setting, maybe need to introduce yourself to a new friend. Both approaches work. And both meet the standard.
