"It's quite a chair! A sense of humor combined with good design will always stand the test of time," says Barbara Forsyth, Mingei Senior Manager of Collections and Exhibitions, of this beer can chair by Douglas Deeds. Deeds was one of San Diego's most celebrated industrial designers associated with the California Design series in the 1960s and 1970s. He figured out that beer cans, at that time made of steel, were load-bearing when brazed together. He took something destined for the trash and constructed an elegant and meticulous feat of art and engineering. When this chair debuted in New York in 1960, it was viewed as radical, strange and something that only a crazy Californian would do. Today, the chair is still wonderfully weird and fresh, and it's our #staff Pick. "Chair," Douglas Deeds, 1962, San Diego, California, made of brazed beer cans, a gift from the artist.
