Our new season continues with Wildlife, the directorial debut from actor Paul Dano and co-written with his partner Zoe Kazan. Jake Gyllenhaal and Carey Mulligan are in the acting roles so some big hitters here. This is one of the films seen at the Access Cinema NVS and comes highly recommended by our committee : Jerry and Jeanette Brinson, a seemingly happily married couple, have recently moved to Montana with their teenage son Joe. When Jerry loses his job, he ignores his wife’s objections and takes another job fighting dangerous wildfires. It prompts Jeanette to re-examine her own lot in life, making some dramatic decisions to reclaim her independence. Joe watches on as the life he knew falls apart.

A Story to Tell… The @urbanworldfilmfest truly crystalized my purpose and next chapter in life. I received Lucy Alibar’s words of wisdom from Beasts of the Southern Wild and saw so many incredible shorts, features, and documentaries. I was on cloud 9. I was inspired by @reggiehudlin listening to his Q&A after the New York premiere of Thurgood Marshall. Could 99. I heard @ava speak during Q&A after Queen Sugar’s premiere. Cloud 999 is an understatement. #nextchapter#passionforart#independentcinema
#themule The ultimate cinematic Rorschach test, no? Subversive/hegemonic send-up/validation of old white male (toxic/justified) patriarchy that unpacks/piles-on outmoded/still valid stereotypes and succeeds/fails depending on wherever you land on the liberal/conservative spectrum! Also, it’s a tongue-in-cheek black comedy. Also, it’s a procedural, drama thriller. Also, it’s a family drama. Also, with B-Coop chasing Clint, it’s very meta. Also, with his real life daughter playing his onscreen daughter it’s a meta mea culpa… right? In any case, Eastwood, man, nobody does it/flops better! PS. No matter what, though, he wisely/sadly gives/wastes the great Wiest ample/not-enough screentime!
Writing on the news of his friend’s death, Jonas Mekas declared in The Village Voice: “The small body of work that Ron [Rice] left will have to be compared now with the work that Jean Vigo left at his own untimely and wasteful death.” Such is the inspiration for @htshell's series Double Vision, starting February 1. https://lightboxfilmcenter.org/series/double-vision-jean-vigo-ron-rice #frenchcinema#independentcinema#undergroundfilm#ronrice#jeanvigo
1-13-19 I watched Harold P. Warren’s “Manos: The Hands of Fate” (1966), oft sited as the worst movie ever made. The jury’s still out on that one but it surely is a prime contender. If you like endless agricultural driving scenery, lame dialogue, bad acting, and general ineptitude, this might be right up your alley.
The screen is a magic medium. It has such power that it can retain interest as it conveys emotions and moods that no other art form can hope to tackle. Stanley Kubrick A shot from Silent Birds Fly An independent cinematic feature A Baraheni film production
