When you feel like you are about to fall into your own trap of comparing yourself with another, pause, and stop yourself. For everyone is unique, and the best person to compare and compete with, is yourself, from before. Be better today than you were yesterday, and strive to constantly improve. Make something better of yourself, for you can only become the best version of yourself, and non other. @Regran_ed from @orion_philosophy - "Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not who someone else is today." - Jordan Peterson - #regrann#improvement#nocomparison#nildrama#incompetition#selfencouragement#selfbetterment#growth

CONFESSION (Russia)🇷🇺 Director: Natalia Gurkina The contrast between noise and silence stands out in this film. Each element represents a side in this power struggle between a director and an actor, one expressive and vocal, the other expressive but mute, The third character in the story, a sign language interpreter, is a comic foil and a stand-in for the audience. You know that discomfort you feel when you are the third person present as co-workers (or couples) argue? There’s that. STYX (UK)🇬🇧 Director: Matt Mitchell “I like films that hint at a wider world, just outside the edge of frame.” This was one of the replies from our interview with Matt Mitchell, the director of this film. The comment resonated because that’s one of the key ingredients we look for in our selections. Matt’s film delivers that level of breadth and depth in many ways. The one-minute constraint demands efficiency and yet STYX introduces us to a multitude of interesting characters and situations. The backstories from each personality round out the film, and we’re given just enough information — from dialogue or visually — for the audience to imagine the rest. The ferry man we never meet, but that character and the title reference to the river Styx ties us to Greek myths and the underworld. The 2 leads, one wisened and resigned to his fate, the other incredulous and refusing to believe she’s “here”, deliver outstanding performances. LONE WOLF (Lesotho) 🇱🇸 Director: Khabane Moses Khongoana “Only the tortoise knows what’s hidden in its shell,” says Lone Wolf, the stylish outcast, philosopher, and thief. Set against a poetic and spiritual landscape, the protagonist confidently shares his world view and talks a big game. By the end, the audience is left to decide whether Lone Wolf is meting out justice, or whether this is a tale of revenge. Either way, he accomplishes his goals, striking fear among the sheep herders and dogs as far as the eye can see. EDGE OF SEVENTEEN (South Korea) 🇰🇷 Director: Nuri Jeong Here’s a horror film in broad daylight and shot in an elevator — a tight space that magnifies the tension. For a time, we know the schoolgirl is trapped. Does the 17-year-old see her tormentors or does she only feel their presence? Either way, she’s fearful and brave in the same way many students are when they face repeated bullying on their way home from school. You may at first interpret everything going on as happening inside her head. But by the end, the director will make you doubt that this is just one girl’s imagination. SPACE ODDITY (Turkey) 🇹🇷 Director: Seyhmus Altun We are fascinated by the lives of astronauts. From trips to the Moon or Mars, Hollywood loves to mine astronauts and their space missions for drama. In this context, “Space Oddity” comes as a breath of fresh air, boldly switching gears to find tragedy in comedy. For David Bowie, the title “Space Oddity” came as a play on Kubrick’s "Space Odyssey". For Seyhmus Altun, it’s the same: all play. From the frisky lead character to the perky narration and lively cuts between scenes, the story feels honest, even delicate at points. The results are certainly refreshing. GONE FISHING (USA) 🇺🇸 Directors: Aaron Krepack and Jason Sherman The conflict between quality time and modern life was a recurring theme among this year’s submissions to Filminute. From addiction to screens, to the pervasive reach of social media, friends, family, and communities are all being eroded by the modern world's powerful pull. Luckily, these two Millennials are woke to what’s happening and heroically resist that pull. They affirm their commitment to friendship #irl during a heart-to-heart talk on the beach.
