“Who needs a book when you have your imagination.”—Dylan We are nearing the end of our first school year as a homeschool family, and my, have we grown. As person’s of knowledge, as a family. For me in that I’ve always been a rule follower, always following guidelines of structure. Yet, somewhere along the way of this year that hardwiring in me broke, and instead I’ve learned to hear the heart. Like today. Book work just wasn’t cooperating with the atmosphere of our day, an air of creativity striving for attention. I could insist on spelling and math anyway creating tension and disagreement, or I can foster his imagination and encourage his critical thinking. So out come the cardboard and scissors and string. Math and spelling will be there tomorrow. That’s the beauty of this whole thing. 💚💙 #homeeducation#thelifeandtimesofdman
How amazing are sloths!! We should take a lesson from them and slow down to appreciate things more in life. Apparently they can swim three times faster than they can move on land. A fun day out with the cousins @woodsidewildlifepark 💚
I’m so glad he stuck with it until the end because his Mona Lisa collage is FABULOUS! 😃👏🏻🎨💕 . Posted @withrepost • @bransonmerrill Honestly... this @masterpiecesociety project was not the most successful we have ever done. Aiden did not find the paper collage process as relaxing as I did. 😆 But it was a good exercise in sticking with something to completion, and we enjoyed learning more about the Mona Lisa. Oh and we loved learning to mix a nice skin tone. Aiden is a big fan of Da Vinci so that helped as well.
These are awesome!! Amazing job! 😃💖🐠🐝 . Posted @withrepost • @curiosityencouraged We love, love, LOVE @masterpiecesociety’s art classes. They bring all sorts of creativity into our #homeschool day. Today we created mixed media bees and oil pastel fish 🎨 Highly recommend for kids and their parents!
Yay! This book page collage sea horse is ADORBS! 👏🏻💕🐴🐬 . Posted @withrepost • @dancing_on_paper_ 🐚Seahorse🐚 You all should totally check out @alishagratehouse amazing art courses @masterpiecesociety. She has so many different courses to chose from! From watercolor to mixed media she has it!
More adorable flowers from our Watercolor Whimsies! 🥰🌸🌻🌱 . Posted @withrepost • @this_simple_balance 🌷🎨 We love having access to amazing art courses that can be done on our own time and from the comfort of our own home. This class from @masterpiecesociety is called Watercolor Whimsies, and I love the way these flowers painted by my 9-year-old turned out (my 7-year-old boy said it took too long and bailed - so use discretion with ages). We’re excited to try the bugs, butterflies, birds and branches later this week! You can find this particular class by clicking my link in profile and then this photo (affiliate link). All you need is watercolors, watercolor paper, and a fine tip black marker. ❤️
Truth: I sometimes let them splurge on technology when they’re getting along. It’s not curriculum; but it IS relational & cooperative. (And peaceful, too!)⠀ .⠀⠀ Years ago, I’d be Googling “adverse technology effects” and keeping an eye on the clock. I’d question myself- then question those questions. Sound familiar?⠀ .⠀⠀ Today, I’m warming up my coffee, reading that next chapter & catching my breath instead.⠀ .⠀⠀ I’m encouraging you to do the same.☕️
#tbt to the reason why I don’t care how bumped up and old my dining room table gets, or how far out of the current style it goes (it was so “in” when we bought it, but what’s “in” today will be “out” tomorrow)... And, who can keep up with what’s “in” anyway!? I’m no Joanna Gaines!! I don’t even mind that it’s a tad bit too big for our current dining room here in Tennessee... It was the one piece of furniture that was coming with us from the west coast to the east coast, no matter what... Okay, who am I kidding!? I brought a lot of furniture... And books. Oh my goodness, the books... Kyrsten might be worried that I’m a hoarder... I am just so sentimental, you guys!! And I have so many memories attached to so many things... 🤷🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ I know. It’s just a table... But, I cherish this table they are all seated at here in this memory doing their morning devotions... I cherish it because of the time spent together around it... The conversations and fellowship we’ve had seated there... The prayers prayed around it... The meals shared... The lighthearted family time... The serious meetings had... If tables could talk... Well, this one would be the confidante of some of our most intimate conversations, desperate prayers cried, moments of rejoicing over the ones answered, loud laughter, quiet somber talks... Tears have fallen on it, celebration cakes have been smeared on it, it’s been colored on and written on... For a lot of years, it was the place where we piled all our books and “did school”... It’s been lovingly and carefully set with the china my grandmother gave me and crystal glasses meant for special meals... And, it’s been carelessly dumped on, holding for days on end piles of laundry waiting to be folded and school papers needing to be sorted... It’s had high chairs pulled up to it’s edge and booster seats secured to the chairs around it... It’s home. At least it feels like home. It
These are AWESOME!!! I’m so glad @amandahillauthor was able to find the right niche for her kids’ artistic interests in our K-2 and Mixing with the Masters courses! Seeing that smile makes me so happy! 😁 . Posted @withrepost • I went into homeschooling because I feel strongly that the arts and learning to create is just as important as math and science, and I wanted to provide an education for my kids that followed that. But sometimes we fall short of our best intentions. The last few months, I've been feeling a strong pull to really focus on my kids interests just as much as multiplication and history. Well, Max is a musician and I've got that covered. Jane is a writer, I've got that covered too. But both Jane and Tommy consider themselves artists and I did not feel equipped to give them more than very basic art lessons. Jane is 10 now, her skills have surpassed mine, she's into manga and mixed media stuff that I have zero experience with. Then I found @masterpiecesociety and signed up for their membership. They have So. Much. Advanced art lessons in sketching, watercolor, acrylic, and pastels. Seasonal art projects. Art history that incorporates learning art techniques and employing them in your own projects, a ton of art projects appropriate for K-2 including drawing instructions for all sorts of objects. And monthly art projects for adults! All with step by step, clear video instruction. We've already done 4.5 projects, as you'll see in the pictures. My 5yo loves doing art with me every day. In the pics, you'll see our constellation picture in acrylics, our watercolor bluebirds, thr airplane we learned to draw, and an octopus in watercolor and acrylic. Jane is learning about DaVinci and currently working on making a mixed media version of Mona Lisa. This subscription is worth every penny!
This tiny human is usually the reason why #homeschooling often becomes chaotic. But oh Luke, my wild 3rd child, you’ve stolen such a big piece of my heart. Although he’s still too young to be taught a curriculum I know that what he sees going on in this household is exactly the kind of learning that I want shaping him at his tender age. A home where we love Jesus, each other, and where spending this much time together is something we see as a privilege. #thisishomeschool
Thursdays are for poetry 📚😍☕️ Today, we left the tea behind and went on a poetry walk instead. It was our delight to find a poem inspired by each of our surroundings as we encountered them. . . Joanna’s favorites today: •Oh, Fair to See by Christina Rossetti (cherry blossoms) •Wildflower by Stanley Plumly •Flower in the Crannied Wall by Tennyson . . My favorites today: •Wild Geese by Mary Oliver •The Tuft of Flowers by Frost •To a Skylark by Shelley (the birds serenaded us all morning) . . Elliot’s favorites were the horses ❤️ I still owe him a horse poem. Any recommendations, friends? Or favorite poems of any subject? Do share! . . #wildflowers#alwayswildflowers#poetryteatime#optoutside#homeeducation#wildandfreechildren#letthembelittle#homeschool#readaloud
*Introducing the Sandpaper Numbers The Sandpaper Numbers are an important foundational Montessori mathematics material that introduce numerals 0 – 9 to young children. Like other Montessori sandpaper materials, the Sandpaper Numbers are tactile, inviting the child to touch and experiment. The material is comprised of 10 green boards, each displaying a number on the front from 0 – 9, cut out of fine-grit sandpaper. It is often presented in a three period lesson to young children. Purpose The direct purpose of the Sandpaper Numbers is to teach children the symbols that represent each number, allowing them to visually identify any number from 0 – 9. In Montessori education this is specifically taught separately to counting from 0 – 9, where children often fall back on rote memorisation. Due to the tactile feel of the number cards, the material also prepares children for the writing of numerals, which can be used as an extension activity for the Sandpaper Numbers. Children are introduced to the Sandpaper Numbers from three years of age. . . #kids_funtivity #invitationtoplay#teacherspayteachers#etkinlik#evdeetkinlik#okuloncesi#okulöncesi#handmade#etkinlikpaylasimi#homeeducation#learningthroughplay

I'm telling you, mamas. If you feel like you're totally screwing up or if you have no idea what to do next to reach the heart of your children... get them outside so God can show up to fill in the gaps. They'll come alive at the sight of all He's created for them and you'll get a fresh perspective on the things that light them up and the gift they are to the world. You'll load back up in the car and head home with enough new energy to face whatever is coming up next. Nature is full of miracles... probably the very one you need right this moment. We don't have to do it all alone and this is one way I've learned to lean on Him. ❤️🌱
We finished up our school year today with the windows open and the sound of rain falling outside. My kids are still so young, “school” is a word I use very loosely. M will officially start K in July and we will continue with AmblesideOnline Year 0. For us that looks like reading all of the classic fairytales and fables, children’s poetry, using Math in everyday life with worksheets available whenever he feels like doing them, learning to read organically through everyday interactions and lots of read aloud time with Explode the Code available whenever he feels like doing a few pages here and there, and most importantly PLAY. Lots and lots of unscheduled time to explore and play however he would like. We’re excited to spend our summer outside, at the beach, camping, and reading our first big chapter book together. I have a stack to choose from including Charlotte’s Web, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Mouse and the Motorcycle, Stuart Little, James and the Giant Peach, The Boxcar Children Book #1, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, and a few more. Where should we start?!? They are all so good I can’t decide!
