I was able to go to the Georgia Archives yesterday and dig through some good stuff! 3 big boxes of primary documents and a stack of books. Not enough time! Can’t wait to share some of the goodies with you! #rosenwaldschools#unitygrove#sschats#historynerd
Alfredo James Pacino was born on April 25, 1940 in Manhattan, New York City, to an Italian-American family. One of the greatest actors in all of film history, Al Pacino established himself during one of cinema's most vibrant decades, the 1970s, and has become an enduring and iconic figure in the world of American movies.
Today is #worldpenguinday and as a lover of all things penguin would make my #otdinhistory post about it. This little chap was at London Zoo he was in the training pool as was still a baby and not able to join the adults. I never used to like penguins as much as I do now. But I just find them cute, funny and fascinating little creatures. Hopefully my next tattoo will be a penguin. Would happily have one as a pet, but that will never be possible or fair for it. #onthisdayinhistory#historynerd#historydegree#worldpenguinday
What was one of the hidden motivations for the story line in #hamilton?? Fascinating conversation with @nikkywalks (Nik Walker) who now plays #aaronburr on the #broadway traveling production of #hamilton. He talks about how Lin Manuel Miranda and Tommy Kail @directorkail channeled their personal struggles and the camaraderie that went into the years of creating this show, into the writing and production of the musical we have all come to love.
The siren song of estate sales struck and I lucked out in the old book department! Two WWI sheet musics, a vintage waffle iron, some lovely books, and even a surprise pop out valentine in one! So much fun! I was joined in this adventure by @lvanmullem, and she also got some great things. We came, we saw, we plundered. #treasure#oldbooks#bibliophile#historynerd
I am loving this book. It's so fascinating about quite a unique individual. I remember growing up seeing the Napoleon & Josephine mini series with Armand Assante and always thought they had a great love story. Not so, well Napoleon wholly loved Josephine, but she did not feel the same and was not a faithful wife. She caused him a lot of heartache, but then he decided to let his eye wander too.🙄 And I love the interesting little facts like Josephine was not a beauty, but quite graceful. She was missing most of her teeth so to hide it she would always smile with her mouth closed, which only made her more alluring. #historynerd#alwayslearning#alwaysreading
One of Napa's many murals. This one is located on Randolph St. & was created by local artist Mikulas (Miky) Kravjansky in 1996 to celebrate Napa's history. Pictured are David Dunlap (with hat) who served as sheriff between 1889-1901, David Sterling Kyser (moustache & sideburns) who became one of the city's most admired mayors in 1907, Superior Court Judge Henry C. Gesford (white beard) who served between 1902-1920 and Lena A. Jackson surround by children who became the public School Superintendent around 1889 I believe. The mural also features the Goodman Library. #napavalley#napa#mural#streetart#napavalleyhistory#historynerd
American soldiers of the 101th Airborne Division rush past a burned-out truck in Veghel, The Netherlands. September, 1944. Hell’s Highway 69 After their baptism in Normandy, the American 101st Airborne Division was commissioned to secure the bridges between Eindhoven and Veghel in Operation Market Garden. A total of 9 bridges over a distance of 22 kilometers. The Americans had to secure these bridges and the road between them so that the British 30th Army Corps could make the advance over this road to Nijmegen and Arnhem. At 3:00 pm on September 17, 1944, the three parachute regiments landed on the Sonse and Schijndelse Heide (heath fields), and at Heeswijk Castle. The Germans reacted quickly and fiercely in this area, which interrupted the advance several times. Hard fighting broke out for possession of this road. The Americans soon called the road Hell's Highway. Several bridges between Eindhoven and Nijmegen were captured by the 82nd and 101st. Nowhere on the route are there as many bridges as at Veghel. The Germans, under command of Feldmaarschall Model want to destroy these vulnerable bridges to stop the allied advance to Nijmegen. The 101st met little resistance and captured most of their initial objectives by the end of 17 September. However, the demolition of the division's primary objective, a bridge over the Wilhelmina Canal at Son, delayed the capture of the main road bridge over the Maas until 20 September. Faced with the loss of the bridge at Son, the 101st unsuccessfully attempted to capture a similar bridge a few kilometers away at Best but found the approach blocked. On September 22, 1944, the village of Havelt is attacked by the Germans of "Kampfgruppe Walther" who massively open the attack on the “Engte van Veghel" from Erp. A deliberate action by Feldmaarschall Model to break through the narrow Corridor. Model's plan succeeds. The Germans break the Corridor at Mariaheide and at Eerde. #history#ww2#germany#germanhistory#worldwar
When your husband gives you a necklace of Roman coins. There’s a legion* on my neck and so much love in my heart for the nerd who gets me. Thank you. *As pointed out by @JennyFreakingWilliamson there aren’t enough coins on this necklace to be a full legion. It’s a contubernium at most. Although it’s actually 3 coins short of a contubernium. #coins#coinjewelry#romancoins#nerdygirl#historynerd#thankyou#selfie
The U.S.S Constitution located in Boston, Massachusetts. 📷 Hey everyone! So sorry for not posting lately, exam season is coming up and it may or may not be kicking my butt right now. But here’s a new post to get you through the week! I visited the U.S.S Constitution over the summer and was amazed at the sheer size of this ship! Not only was the size impressive, but I was lucky enough to watch Navy soldiers raising the sail. Totally worth the 15 minutes of standing in the sun to watch them work together as a team and interact with a piece of history! 📷 ~~~~~~~~~~~ 📷 The U.S.S Constitution is one of the oldest ships in the United States Navy. In 1794, the U.S Congress authorized the construction of 6 ships built among separate seaports with the Constitution being built in Boston. However, the ship proved its strength and durability during the War of 1812 against British soldiers and their own naval fleets. The U.S.S Constitution defeated 4 British ships on three separate occasions. Given the nickname ‘Old Iron Sides’ the ship has a total of 54 cannons below and on its upper decks. The ship is 204 feet long with a width of 43 feet and 6 inches. 📷 More information can be found at https://ussconstitutionmuseum.org 📷 #history#historyfacts#historynerd#travel#historic#unitedstates#massachusetts#historybuff#journey#trip#museums#historicdistricts#unitedstateshistory#boston#bostonmassachusetts#ships#navy#monument#usnavy#historyblogger#blog#historyblog#americanrevolution#warof1812#navybattleship
By the early 1820s, the Mexican War of Independence had subsided, and Stephen Fuller Austin, the "Father of Texas", knew he needed a bunch of hard fucks to protect the newly settled Texas families from bandits and savages. There was no regular army to protect the citizens so in 1823, Austin organized a small, informal armed group whose duties required them to range over the countryside, and who thus came to be known as "Rangers". The Texas Rangers were formally constituted in 1835 and, in November, Robert McAlpin Williamson was chosen to be the first Major of the Texas Rangers. Within two years the Rangers comprised more than 300 men. (Not the original Rangers. | Company F, Texas Rangers, 1885.)
@cronistoria ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ 📧Hai qualche domanda?
