Blurted exactly 14 minutes after running on a treadmill for the first time in my life today. Was it gruelling? Yes. Was I terrified I'd trip and be unceremoniously launched into the middle of the gym for all to see? Absolutely! Did I step up any way? You bet (...after some much needed coaxing). . . I ran one mile in 14 minutes. Not impressive at all, in fact to most people it's nothing to boast about, but still a huge personal accomplishment so I'm going to relish it. Although I was puffing and bright red in the face from this little jaunt, my body rejoiced and for the rest of the day my grossly ignored muscles felt bursting with life!
It's not necessarily muscle burns fat," Rondel King, MS, CSCS, an exercise physiologist at NYU Langone's Sports Performance Centre told POPSUGAR. So what actually burns fat? The first thing to know is that "The primary fuel source for muscle is glucose or glycogen," which is the stored form of carbohydrates in the muscle, Rondel explained. In order for your body to utilise fat and burn it, the body has to convert triglycerides, the main form of fat stored in your body, into glucose. This happens through 'gluconeogenesis'. According to Rondel, gluconeogenesis takes place when your body needs glucose and also when you do high-intensity exercise like sprinting and weightlifting. To be completely clear, no, muscle doesn't directly burn fat. Instead, the fat molecules have to be converted into glucose — then your muscle will be able to use it for fuel - burn it. The more muscle mass you have, the higher your resting metabolic rate (the amount of calories your body needs to perform basic functions that keep you alive) becomes. This means you'll be burning more calories, Rondel explained. 2 questions I get asked everyday...EVERYDAY!😉 • Do I drink a pre-workout? & Does Energize break your fast? • Well, #1 I do drink a pre-workout every morning that I DO work out. But I will never drink one just as a pick me up. Can I tell you that’s one of my biggest head scratchers is seeing people holding a Redbull or a Monster energy drink waiting to board a plane or just because???🤷🏻♀️ • I have never been one to drink an energy drink full of chemicals. If it is at the expense of my health, I would rather skip it. I do drink Energize because I’m good 👍🏼 with the ingredients and I actually really like the taste and boost to start my workout!⚡️⚡️ • Now, will Energize technically break your fast? I suppose, technically, any amount of calories can be cause for a break in your fast but I also don’t think your body feels “fed“ with just 30 to 40 cal. Our body is carefully made up of arranged atoms, cells, tissues and organs. It’s only function is to keep each one of us alive! There is so much going on inside our body that providing it with the nutrients it requires is imperative for our survival. Here are some tips to increase nutrient intake: 1. Eat different foods each day.2 Include vegetables in each meal (eg. breakfast - mushrooms, baked beans, steamed spinach, avocado/snacks - cucumbers, baby tomatoes, carrots, celery) 3. Eat a piece of fruit and a handful of nuts and seeds as a snack 4. Consume small amounts of protein regularly- eggs or salmon or beans for breakfast/ tuna, chickpeas, tofu or chicken for lunch/ palm size portion of meat (2-3 x per week) or fish/seafood(2-3 x per week) or poultry (1-2 x per week) or legumes (1-2 x per week) for dinner. 5. Drink at least 2 litres of water daily. Herbal teas except for green tea can be included.
