Here in Cali, we’ve been able to finally take a breath, sort of🌧...recently climbing out of a very long drought due to a TON of rain this season. As a result, we now have an insane blooming boom🌼, where the hills are mossy green, covered in wild flowers & the like. Our yards are full & grasses are growing like weeds. While it’s been wonderful & the rain has been necessary, now many of us face a different problem.  Yesterday, I was hit with a pretty legit allergy attack🤧—stinging eyes, sneezing, plugged ears, loss of equilibrium, & the scariest symptom of feeling as though I couldn’t take a full breath. I was around so many blooming flowers & grasses, that before I knew it, I was having a hard time breathing normally.  Now, I’ve been a sufferer since I was a teen, & for years I was on sinus meds/antibiotics & OTC allergy pills to alleviate symptoms. But, I haven’t taken a single allergy pill in over a decade. While I still occasionally suffer seasonally, the way in which I handle the annoyance of allergies has changed.  Allergies hit people for diff reasons—air pollution/toxins, indoor pollution like dust, but right now I assume the biggest culprit is seasonal allergies due to pollen/weeds.  I’ve learned the way in which I RESPOND to these triggers largely depends on the state of my immune system. If my system is or was suppressed, or my liver/spleen is taxed due to an over abundance of toxins—whatever the cause—I become more susceptible to chronic allergy issues.  A 💡 went off a couple yrs ago (w/ docs help), & I realized the body as a whole had to be taken into consideration. Gaining control of my immune system & gut health was crucial in getting a grip on my allergies. Taking OTC drugs or antis only made me crazy, killing necessary bacteria, taxing my liver, & masking the real problem. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) we certainly know how to eat in order to nourish the body and to address deficiencies. Eating locally and according to seasonal influence is not something new or trendy, but rather something essential to good health.  EATING SEASONALLY:  SPRING: Spring is the season of new birth and new growth. Examples of recommended foods for the spring include onions, leeks, leaf mustard, yams, dates, cilantro, mushrooms, spinach and bamboo shoots. Fresh green and leafy vegetables should also be included in meals; sprouts from seeds are also valuable. SUMMER:Plants grow fast in summer. People act energetically, and the body’s qi and blood become relatively more vigorous than in other seasons. Some foods are recommended for keeping the body cool and balanced, such as watermelon, strawberries, tomatoes, mung beans, cucumber,  bean sprouts, duck and fish. In general, the daily diet should contain more vegetables and fruit at this time so as to stimulate the appetite and provide adequate fluids. AUTUMN:Things begin to fall and mature in autumn. Beneficial foods for this are nuts or seeds, pear, lotus root, pumpkin, honey, soy milk and dairy products.  It is advisable to eat more food with sour flavors such as pineapple, apple, grapefruit and lemon.  The body needs extra fluids to counteract the dry environment WINTER: Living things slow down to save energy.  We should consume appropriate fats and high protein foods.
