Wondering HOW to give up sugar?  It's a struggle for many people, including me. Sugar is 8 TIMES MORE ADDICTIVE than cocaine. I've had phases where I've binged on it, but not anymore now that I've brought balance to my gut.  Australians in general have a SUGAR PROBLEM. We eat more than 1kg of mostly added sugar per week, far exceeding WHO recommendations.  WHY give up sugar?  Apart from all the disease it causes and is linked to like Type 2 Diabetes, it's also THE MOST INFLAMMATORY FOOD you can eat, and inflammation is involved in 90% of disease. You're in the supermarket looking at all the yoghurt brands and thinking - what the heck? Which one do I choose, there's too many! . It's important to note that not all yoghurts are the same. . There are SO many on the market that may even say ‘natural’ and ‘organic’, but their strains have not been clinically tested to even contain them. . There's only a couple of yoghurt brands I recommend to patients based on theim being clinically trialed to contain strains of probiotics - ‘Vaalia’ and ‘Jalna’. . What the heck causes PCOS? If you're reading this and you have PCOS, I'm sure you've wondered this. . The first reason I am going to share is likely not a huge shocker for most people, genetics. Animal studies have found that babies exposed to high androgen levels during pregnancy may be more prone to have PCOS as adults. . But what about the environmental piece? You guys - this one again is another reason to avoid plastics (and yes, BPA-free plastics too!): if a woman is exposed to xenoestrogenic products (think BPA and other environmental chemicals), this may worsen hormonal imbalances and potentially INDUCE PCOS in the next generation. . That's right - minimizing YOUR exposure to environmental chemicals is important for the hormonal health of your future children! . Is this new information to you? Friends! There are a lot of new faces around here so I thought I would do a little intro post so we can all get to know each other better! First and foremost thank you so much for following along. Know that it means the world to me💕 If you are new, welcome! I’m Erin and here are a few things about me:  1. My medical specialties are in both internal medicine and rheumatology which are fancy titles that mean I went to school forever! (Almost 15 years to be exact)  2. I switched to the paleo diet almost 9 years ago (the same day I started residency) and have never looked back. This way of eating has changed my life and the health improvements I’ve seen in my patients willing to try it have been incredible. I truly do believe that real food is medicine.  3. I hate the feel of wood. Popsicle sticks and chop sticks are basically my nemesis.  4. Flowers make me happy, so, so happy. 5. I would much rather have a quiet night in than a wild night out.  6. 90% of my wardrobe (and kitchen dishes) comes from @anthropologie  6. My soul is happiest by the beach or the lake. Give me some sun and a body of water and that will bring me so much joy. 7. I love to read and am always looking for new great books so if there are any other readers out there please send me your favorites. 8. I wear a dress almost everyday. I much prefer dresses to pants.  9. I first started my blog about 7 years ago but had no idea what I was doing and barely had time to post (hello residency) so I’ve started focusing on it way more over the last couple years. 10. Growing up I swam competitively and played basketball. I basically lived in the pool or on the court. A quick summed up post of why we begin to experience illness and symptoms, and yes, it has to do with the liver! Let me know if you found this post helpful!  Disarmament: The livers first line of defense is to remove toxins out of your body. It tries to neutralize a toxin or "repackage" it to a safer form, or produce a disarming chemical compound to make the toxin less harmful and allow it to be released into the blood stream.  Detainment: But if the liver is too run down and overloaded then it can't do it's job of disarming and neutralizing so instead it resorts to it's second line of defense which is holding onto these toxins. The liver just stores them in pockets, each type of posion goes into it's own trash bin. Depending on how damaging the poison is, the most damaging poisons get stored in the deeper layers if the liver (such as petroleum products, dioxins, DDT, aspartame, MSG, viruses, toxic heavy metals, and opiods). As the liver waits for you to help it cleanse and detox from these poisons, this "hoarding" method allows you to continue on about your life without these poisons going to your brain or heart and shortening your lifespan. In the long run, you will eventually develop liver sickness.  In your 30s and 40s, you begin to experience signs of "aging". That is because your livers protection can't last forever with this continuing burden if we don't help it cleanse. The liver sends us signs and symptoms letting us know it can no longer keep taking care of us.

On my way to home yesterday I stopped in a petrol station⛽ and to my surprise there was a Pret-a-Manger shop 🏪 , and look what I found! No many times I can buy a full lunch menu, gluten free and vegan.... And I was amazing!! The Smashed Avocado 🥑 on Toast was amazing. The bread 🍞 is vegan and gluten free, and guess what, it is also soya and maize free!! The Sweet Potato 🍠 Falafel & Smashed Beets Veggie Box was delicious! And for dessert Mango & Banana🍌 Sunshine Bowl, it was a real treat, oat gluten free granola with blueberries and coconut chip🥥!!! I am looking forward to go there again... Quick quinoa burgers by @feelgoodfoodie for your summer grilling! Bonus 💯 points for being vegan! 🍔✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ INGREDIENTS: • 1/4 cup uncooked quinoa • 2/3 cup water • One 15oz can black beans rinsed and drained • 3 oz tomato paste • 1 teaspoon paprika • 1 teaspoon onion powder • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder • 1/2 teaspoon oregano • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon pepper • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs • 1 tablespoon olive oil • Burger buns and toppings of choice ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ INSTRUCTIONS: 1. In a small pot, cook the quinoa with water and add salt to taste.  2. Bring a boil, cover and simmer for 14 minutes. Uncover and fluff with a fork. 3. In a large bowl, add the rinsed black beans and mash the bean fully with a fork or potato masher.  4. Add the cooked quinoa to the black beans, then add the tomato paste, all the seasoning and the breadcrumbs. Form four patties. 5. Supper and then little turnip’s takeaway lunch for next day 😊 Here I have packed it in Tupperware as I felt it was safer to carry around than a glass container in his bag. He wolfs down these bean stews and the sweet potato is always a good addition as it makes it extra sweet and filling. I have planned my food shopping really badly lately so we keep running out of various things - recently brown rice! As those of you on the Paddison Program will know though, white rice was an excellent solution at first when you’re healing your gut, as it is less acidifying on the system and often gets less reaction in terms of inflammation. As a general rule I try to go for brown rice though with all its nutrients and goodness 💚 Super excited as my mum is arriving tomorrow for almost a week, then J and I jet off to Sweden on Sunday and stay for over a week, woop! He is fully weaned now by the way, which was a bigger thing for me than for him 🤨 I realised he wasn’t too bothered one morning after we had dropped the night and day-feeds for about a month, so instead of a morning feed we went straight to breakfast and he never looked back - after being THE biggest milk 🐒 in town!!! If you know me, you know I LOVE sauerkraut. I put it on everything.🧡 • I recently received some EPIC sauerkraut from @clekraut and I was way too excited to try the variety of flavors they sent me.😍 I plan to make some delicious things with this stuff--but in the meantime here is what I did with it for breakfast this morning! • I added the Curry Kraut (whatttttt 🤯) to smashed chickpeas, pink salt, pepper, turmeric, onions, garlic and sautéed it all together in a pan. Then added some @followyourheart slices to make it cheesy and served it with leftover potato salad (recipe from The Mello Cookbook) and steamed asparagus. WOAH. Let me tell you. This stuff is so damn good. I even served this to some people who aren't mega kraut fans like me and they loved it! • Thank you @clekraut for creating this product! I seasoned the bone broth with some extra salt, pepper and garlic powder to give it some extra flavor. 💜 Raw Tacos... made with Mango & Mushroom Ceviche from @deliciouslyella. Sliced some mushrooms and left them in a mixture of lime juice, chilli, garlic, ginger... I added some cumin and smoked paprika, thinly sliced peppers, coriander. Left it for about an hour. Mixed in the chopped mango. Used my new tofu press to make these delectable fried tofu tenders: made with gluten-free panko breading & fried in organic, unrefined, extra virgin coconut oil. •Secret to the perfect texture down below• There’s a lot of stigma around tofu/soy these days which is unfortunate because soy can be beneficial IF you’re getting the right sources. It’s good to remember that there are civilizations that have lived off of it for centuries & they’re pretty healthy. The problem is with the *highly processed* and mostly *GMO* soy ingredients found in almost everything (salad dressings, pasta sauces, faux meat products, etc). When I switched to a mostly plant-based diet a year ago or so, I started eating a ton of those soy-based faux meat & dairy products. After a few months, I was experiencing major cycle/hormonal issues. My OB/GYN suggested a more whole foods approach & to avoid the processed stuff. When I cut those products out, found soy-free alternatives & ate less processed food in general, I felt better. (They of course are okay in moderation but I was eating them daily.) Cultural Diet trends and ways of eating en mass are so interesting to me, from an anthropological perspective. Right now we are in the deep throws of trend! 🌱”PLANT BASED = the holy grail of health”. 🌱But is it...really?!? Stay with me...I think in 10 years we will collectively be able to see it. Stay with me!! Plants are good!! But there is a web of connectivity beyond them, that we are integrally part of. Planet Earth is based on relationship, and I know we’re all in collective denial, but those ✨sustainable relationships✨are based on give and take.😮 The “give” is hard to witness...and the “take” is not something the collective wants to admit at all these days! Here is where I’m going to drop the bomb. 💥Mineral metabolism is actually the BASIS and where the heart of good health lies.💥 And some of those minerals...plants just can not provide! Boom! At least the plants that we are growing, in our depleted mismanaged soil! Even organic. Minerals are the foundation of human health. Without minerals, the spark plugs of life called enzymes cannot function. They drive the machine you walk around in! Nearly everyone on the globe has copper disfunction, iron overload and severe magnesium deficiency. And “plant based obsession” can not begin to solve this, and is in fact adding to the imbalance! This story must deepen. We must look at the roots of the roots for answers. Don’t hate me 😘
As promised here is the recepie for these yummy buckwheat pancakes.  Buckwheat isn't actually wheat and serves as a source of antioxidants. Paired with the berries used in this recipe these pancakes make a great immune system booster.  These are gluten free. And I've also included a vegan alternative 😘  Ingredients: 75g Buckwheat flour 1tsp Baking Powder  2tsps Cinnamon 75ml Vegan milk (almond, coconut etc) 2 eggs (vegan alternative: 3/4 chickpea flour + 1tbsp water) 45-75g blueberries halved (Or any berries) Olive oil or coconut oil for cooking  Method: 1. Mix all ingredients together  2. Brush oil onto a frying pan and heat 3. Scoop pancake mixture into round circles in frying pan 4. Keep heat at medium-low 5. Once top of pancake has small bubbles flip pancake over 6. Cook until desired Browning is achieved  7. Serve and enjoy with what ever toppings you like (berries; almond butter, honey etc)  To mix it up a bit try adding a banana or vanilla extract  Enjoy!
