💩Let's Talk POOP.  What does healthy poop look and feel like? . First of all, you should not have to strain to excrete - especially during early pregnancy, (or throughout) as it can lead to hemorrhoids and that is no fun for anyone! . Next, feces should be honey-colored (except if you eat a lot of beets)! If redness occurs otherwise, seek help as it could be an ulcer or other issue you're unaware of. . Consistency should be solid but not too hard causing a strain - this typically means you're dehydrated at a cellular level. . Lastly, you should excrete once daily, if not then increase your fiber intake to 30-35 grams daily by eating more fruit, vegetables, beans, and other high-fiber foods. . Taking a food-based fiber supplement can help but check with a Naturopathic Doctor for what is safe if you are pregnant or trying to conceive as some herbal supplements can stay in the system a while and throw the balance off in your microbiome (intestinal bacteria).

Eating #organic is something to strive for when attaining healthier dietary habits. Outside of just having a heftier receipt at check-out and perhaps prettier looking fruits and vegetables, the benefits of eating organic far outweight the initial costs:  1. A meta-analysis published in the International Journal of Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine found that those that ate organic foods reported improvements in over 28 different health concerns, including digestive issues, respiratory issues, skin abruptions, joint pain, and even prevalence of cancer!  2.Non-organic foods are also commonly genetically modified, coated in harsh pesticides and fertilizers including glyphosate. Crops including corn, soy, sugar beets, rice, potatoes, papaya, zucchini and yellow squash, apples, tomatoes are common culprits, as are other "franken-foods" such as farmed salmon. Eating organically, especially the foods listed above, can help you avoid the potential health detriments GMO's may have.  3. Soil-based microbes are certain types of bacteria that have been 'wiped out" of our soil due to modern farming practices. These microbes have a diversely beneficial impact on our gut health, with science showcasing their abilities to regulate GI imbalances and promote proper immune responses often left stray in auto-immune conditions.
JAMA, YOU NAILED IT. • I wish you guys could have seen me reading this editorial, pacing around saying “ummm YEAH” “yesss” “Exactly!!!” • “Some might suggest that physicians do not need to be educated about nutrition because other health care professionals, including dietitians, are better trained and positioned to make dietary recommendations. But guiding patients to make dietary changes is a team effort and can include appropriately trained dietitians, nutritionists, nurses, health coaches, and chefs. The problem is that, currently, most physicians do not have enough education in nutrition to contribute meaningfully to that team. At minimum, physicians need sufficient training to at least begin the nutrition conversation with their patients.” • And that’s just a snippet. This is a beautiful call to action that I am behind 100%. If I’m ever your physician or educator in the future, best believe we’ll be talking food- and not just what is right or wrong (because what does that mean, anyway?) but the implications of shaping how our patients fuel themselves for their individual optimization . My only complaint about this editorial  is the frequent reference to obesity, rather than general health as a targeted intervention 🙌🏼 • JUST YES • Also, refer to dietitians. The debilitating brain fog I had for months that kept me from doing literally anything even keeping my eyes open because everything was so blurry, went away and I could think, see, read and remember things again. I could go on and on but I think you get the picture.  Food and lifestyle are medicine. You have the power to heal whatever pain you are suffering from. You are not alone. You can do it. So what are you truly buying when you  pay a little extra for a label stating  USDA certified organic?! Is it worth the extra cents or dollar over your regular conventional food? Here’s a few pinpoints for you to consider when you’re out shopping. ✔️Regulations of what is put on your food is much higher than regular conventional foods ✔️Organic food producers must keep records that show they are maintaining organic production practices ✔️Soil which these foods are grown in must be free of Pesticides, GMOs, and synthetic fertilizers for a minimum of 3 years before harvesting ✔️Organic food producers are prohibited from contaminating food or producing in facilities with antibiotics, insecticides, rodenticides, and hormones ✔️Organic food producers are required to keep pest and pest reproduction at bay through non-toxic  methods  As a disclaimer, the words all natural, hormone free and free-range are not to be confused with the organic certification. However when products are labeled certified organic, it can be assumed that it does mean all of those three. Although it’s best to buy all organic, if cost is an issue, take a look at the dirty dozen to determine which ones you should primarily be purchasing as organic 🌿
Stepped up my #keto/#plantparadox friendly bagel game today by adding some matcha to my recipe! Such a simple healing delicious delight! 💚 . INGREDIENTS -2 Tsp salt -3 Cups almond flour -1/2 Cup arrowroot powder -1/2 Cup tapioca starch -1 Tbs matcha powder -2 Tsp baking powder -2 Tbs monkfruit (or sweetener of choice) -2 Tbs apple cider vinegar -1/2 Cup near boiling water -1 Pasture-raised or omega-3 egg -Sesame seeds . HOW TO -Preheat oven to 400F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Bring a medium pot of water to boil with 1 tsp of salt. -Combine all dry ingredients into a bowl. -Remove 1/2 cup of the almost boiling water and add to dry ingredients. Add in the apple cider vinegar. Check the consistency of your dough. Too sticky? Throw in a few more dashes of arrowroot powder. Too dry? Try a little more water. -Divide the dough into balls. You can make 12 mini bagels, or make fewer larger balls for larger bagels. Mold the dough into the bagel shape. (I just used my hands to slightly flatten the dough and then I used my thumb to poke a hole in the middle and shape them.) -Using a slotted spoon or strainer, carefully lower your bagels into the boiling water. Depending on the size of your bagels, you can do up to 3 at a time. Remove the bagels once they float to the top of the water and place onto your parchment paper. -Bake for 10 minutes. Whisk together your egg in a small bowl. Remove bagels from oven and brush with an egg wash. Add sesame seeds while they are still wet from the egg. Bake for another 10 minutes or until slightly golden. -Enjoy! . NOTES: You can store the bagels for up to 3 days in the fridge, or freeze them for future use. I have come so far in my health journey. I’m surviving on minimum sleep due to Gavin having a stomach bug. 🦉Wins include getting the kids out to the park yesterday for almost a full hour of play. 🦉Had showers both day and got dressed. Savory egg muffins have 5 ingredients. Mix together 4 eggs, handful of minced red pepper, handful of minced leafy greens, half a minced onion, and 1 tbsp minced parsley/basil. I also like to add a pinch of sea salt along with crumbly sautéed meat. So good. Preheat oven to 325F, oil a muffin tin, pour in the egg mixture, bake 20-25 minutes. It has been a while since I have done any fermentation at home (well apart from feeding my SCOBY colony and a badly timed sourdough starter) so today I decided that it was the day so and made pickled vegetables. This gut-loving pickle will be ready in about a week’s time and I plan to enjoy it a few times a week. I found out recently that I am intolerant to yeast, and although it is quite mild, I have be mindful of all the fermented foods I eat. I am starting a new batch of Kombucha tomorrow and I am planning to do one with rhubarb. Or maybe a rhubarb, apple and ginger Kvass to spice things up?
