The past year has been interesting to say the least. A year ago today I realized that instead of eating and drinking my feelings, I was #hikingmyfeelings. I had been jobless for four days when we hiked Stonewall Peak, the hike that offered this insight about the lifestyle changes I had made since being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. That discovery gave birth to a hashtag, which inspired a new mindset and container for the time I spend on trail, which opened up a world of possibility for my second attempt at the #transcatalinatrail. Since then, it's been a whirlwind. The second hike on Catalina Island itself was intense, uncovering the root of the chaos happening in my mind and body: I had been wearing an invisible backpack, full of my trauma, which I now lovingly call my #traumapack. After unpacking that sucker across the island, a DM turned into a speaking tour which inspired @maker_of_waves and I to sell all of our possessions (save for adventure equipment) and move into a van full-time. We've met incredible people from all walks of life, just by sharing a story and walking on the earth. Most days, I cry tears of gratitude. This life is of my creation. Everything that I'm involved in, everyone I'm in community with, everything that exists in my world today, I chose. As I recognize what holds me back, I make different choices. Most days feel like I'm at the summit, and it takes a lot of work to trust that it's okay for me to feel this good. Other days feel like this picture. More stairs. More effort required. Perpetually putting one foot in front of the other, hoping that the steps I'm taking will eventually lead me somewhere. There is a path, sure, but I've never walked it before. I don't know where it goes. But it feels right. So I carry on, putting one foot in front of the other, doing at least one thing every day that will get us closer to where we want to be. After almost a year of rocking a mailchimp landing page as a website for this mission, we
🎉 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US! 🎂 One year ago today, standing on the top of Stonewall Peak in San Diego, I (@sydneyunfiltered) had a realization. I was four days into unemployment, having just left my post as CMO at the startup I was working with. No savings to speak of, no backup plan, nothing on my agenda except a second attempt at completing the #transcatalinatrail. I had been through hell and back in the past eight months - getting diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, all of the changes that come with a chronic disease, and prior to leaving the startup, I had left my fancy corporate marketing job. I had no idea what was coming next, but I had a suspicion it would change my life. At the summit, I realized that in light of my diabetes diagnosis, I had changed my coping mechanisms in times of stress. Here I was, not diving head first into a pint of Ben + Jerry's. I didn't seek answers at the bottom of a wine bottle. Instead of eating or drinking my feelings through this transition, I was #hikingmyfeelings. And thus, a hashtag was born. I went on to complete the TCT with my adventure buddy for life, @maker_of_waves. When we got home, after gushing to the @catalinaconservancy about my experience, they connected me with the coordinator for @REI in SoCal and the rest, as they say, is #herstory. A hashtag turned into a speaking tour which turned into this movement. We are on a mission to help more folks find healing outside, to help them turn their pain into power. Today marks one year since that hike to Stonewall Peak and we are so grateful for the support and love so far. This tour is 100% community funded, and we are proud of that. To celebrate, we've been working hard to get a real website up and running. After running this show with a mailchimp landing page for a year, we are excited to show you our new look! Want to help us celebrate? We'd love your feedback on our new website! DM us, comment below, let us know what you think. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. WE
2 photos, same scene, different years, and perhaps a whole different self. The first shot was from just several days ago, at dusk, of sea stacks off the coast of Humbug Mountain State Park. It was during the same "blue hour" that I mentioned in my previous post of elk sightings, but this was post-sunset instead of pre-sunrise. The blue hour is a special time to photograph as the light and colors are often very soft and subtle, and folks typically do not associate them as being prime time for photographs - "golden hour" gets all the buzz, and for good reasons. The second shot is of the same sea stacks during a spectacularly colorful sunset (and apparently a much lower tide) in October 2013, during the same bicycle journey I've been mentioning for much of this road trip. It was a hugely transformative journey, and one that I'm still receiving dividends in the form of lessons of nature, exploration, and community. Photographs not only preserve memories of beauty in nature and of people, but helps tremendously in jogging my memory of emotions felt and/or the deeper human experiences during a particular moment or time period as these do for my pedal-powered journey 6 years ago. . . . . . #subtledream#oregoncoast#seastacks#optoutside#theoutbound#intothewild#in2nature#wearestillwild#greettheoutdoors#getoutstayout#letsgosomewhere#wildernessculture#ventureout#staywild#neverstopexploring#modernoutdoorsman#lifeofadventure#mylifeoutside
