Richard O'Shaughnessy is an assistant professor with the Center for Computational Relativity and Gravitation, the School of Mathematical Science, and the Astrophysical Sciences and Technology Program. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ His group works to discover and interpret the ripples in the fabric of the universe produced by merging compact binaries: black holes and neutron stars. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Currently, he's focused on interpreting measurements from LIGO and similar gravitational wave detectors, alone and with light. Newtonian Space-time :- According to its most famous proponent, Sir Isaac Newton, for example, absolute time (which is also sometimes known as “Newtonian time”) exists independently of any perceiver, progresses at a consistent pace throughout the universe, is measurable but imperceptible, and can only be truly understood mathematically. For Newton, absolute time and space were independent and separate aspects of objective reality, and not dependent on physical events or on each other.Time, in this conception, was external to the universe, and so must be measured independently of the universe. It would continue even if the universe were completely empty of all matter and objects, and essentially represented a kind of container or stage setting within which physical phenomena occur in a completely deterministic way. In Newton’s own words: “absolute, true and mathematical time, of itself, and from its own nature, flows equably without relation to anything external”.Although absolute time is the “real” time in Newton’s opinion, he cautioned that we mere mortals are not however capable of perceiving it directly. Instead, we are only capable of perceiving what he called “relative, apparent and common time”, which can be observed in the measurement of perceivable objects in motion (like the Moon or Sun) and the ticking of terrestrial clocks, and from which we infer the everyday passage of time. What Gravitational Waves Will Change  General relativity is often described as beautiful. It’s an old theory, created over a century ago with math that’s as complex as it is fascinating. And while today the theory has become iconic, it wasn’t necessarily met with fervor for years after it was introduced. Instead of causing an uproar, Einstein’s theory had a quiet start and came to make its mark in physics by its permanence, not by causing a big bang. Over the years the theory’s predictions have been scrutinized and tested and proven true time and time again — from the existence of black holes to the phenomenon of time dilation to the light deflection we call gravitational lensing, general relativity has only grown more accepted as the years pass. But for decades, there was one prediction that eluded scientists despite their constant attempts to see it. It was an event so monumental that it would change our understanding of the universe forever. To the human race, it would be like acquiring an entirely new sense with which to experience the great beyond. Whereas before we’d only been able to see, we would now be able to hear, adding a new dimension to the story we were trying to piece together about the world and everything around it. And in 2015 we were finally able to see them for the first time. Gravitational waves.  They arise from events so luminous that their energy eclipses everything, becoming 50 times more powerful in their last fraction of a second than all the universe combined. These events occur when two massive, rapidly accelerating objects fall towards each other and merge. In the case of our first detection of gravitational waves, it was two black holes with the mass of about 30 suns each, but gravitational waves can also be caused by neutron stars or supernova explosions. Energy released by the objects then causes ripples in the fabric of space. We then call these ripples gravitational waves. They’re not unlike the ripples on

It consists of two detectors situated 1,865 miles (3,002 kilometers) apart in isolated regions in the states of Washington and Louisiana. Each L-shaped facility has two arms positioned at right angles to each other and running 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) from a central building. Lasers are beamed down each arm and bounced back by mirrors, essentially acting as a ruler for the arm. Sensitive detectors can tell if the length of the arms of a LIGO detector varies by as little as 1/10,000 the width of a proton, representing the incredibly small scale of the effects imparted by passing gravitational waves. LIGO has two observatories to act as a check on the other to rule out that potential gravitational-wave signal detection is not due to a local, terrestrial disturbance; both facilities will detect a true gravitational wave moving at the speed of light nearly simultaneously. Although the twin LIGO facilities act as a single observatory, they are not designed for "observing" in the conventional sense. Best Explanation of Hawking Radiation.. BLACK HOLES ARE AIN'T SO BLACK.... In 1974, Hawking shocked the physics world by showing that black holes should in fact thermally create and emit sub-atomic particles, known today as Hawking radiation, until they exhaust their energy and evaporate completely. According to this theory, black holes are not completely black, and neither do they last forever. Hawking showed how the strong gravitational field around a black hole can affect the production of matching pairs of particles and anti-particles, as is happening all the time in apparently empty space according to quantum theory. If the particles are created just outside the event horizon of a black hole, then it is possible that the positive member of the pair (say, an electron) may escape - observed as thermal radiation emitting from the black hole - while the negative particle (say, a positron, with its negative energy and negative mass) may fall back into the black hole, and in this way the black hole would gradually lose mass. The particle content of a given state in quantum field theory depends on the inertial frame of reference occupied by an observer attempting the measurement. Roughly speaking, what one observer swears is vacuum from within her reference frame might be described by someone occupying another reference frame as containing many particles. Relativity (which does not always play well with quantum mechanics) reports that accelerating observers are bound by an event horizon defined by their light-cone, and this clearly implies that regions in spacetime exist that a given observer can't measure, and which would produce different (though equally valid) conclusions about their states based on their individual reference frames should their light-cones intersect. Basically, having quickly (and loosely) explained some important principles. One of the key parts of modern interferometers is the Fabry-Perot cavity.  A Fabry-Perot cavity is made by placing an additional mirror with both a transmissivity and reflectivity in front of the end test mass of both arms.  This has the effect of ‘wrapping’ the system onto itself, by reflecting the laser beam between the two mirrors, effectively lengthening the arms.  This means that the strain due to a gravitational wave has a larger effect than without a FPC - something pivotal when the measured quantity is as small as gravitational waves.  #physics #science #gravitationalwaves #ligo

In Einstein's general theory of relativity, gravity is treated as a phenomenon resulting from the curvature of spacetime. This curvature is caused by the presence of mass. Generally, the more mass that is contained within a given volume of space, the greater the curvature of spacetime will be at the boundary of its volume. As objects with mass move around in spacetime, the curvature changes to reflect the changed locations of those objects. In certain circumstances, accelerating objects generate changes in this curvature, which propagate outwards at the speed of light in a wave-like manner. Today word that you need to remeber is Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave observatory (LIGO). Because, LIGO is a large instrument which has the ability to detect gravitational waves from the vastness of space, picking up from yesterdays post.  LIGO initially was set up in two location in the united states and is operated by Caltech and MIT in a collaboration.  This observatory is set to come to India, with the collaboration taking place between three national institutes, namely  the Raja Ramanna Center for Advanced Technology (Indore), the Institute for Plasma Research (Ahmedabad), and the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (Pune). With multiple collaborations in USA (LIGO), Italy (VIRGO) and India (LIGO-India) triangulation of the location in space of a spceific gravitational wave emitted from a specific point in space.  India will provide infrastructure, vaccum systems, work force and other essentials for the operations. LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) is one of the European Space agency’s main upcoming missions, the aim of which is to launch the worlds first space based gravitational wave detector.  LISA will consist of three spacecraft trailing the earths orbit of the sun, that are shaped in an equilateral triangle and separated by millions of miles. They will fire lasers at each-other, the signal of which will be disrupted measurably from any passing gravitational waves. Encoded in this disruption is the mechanics of the cosmic event being recorded.  Being in space allows a much greater separation than on earth, meaning that gravitational waves can be detected at a much lower frequency than even the most advanced theoretical ground based detectors.  #physics #gravitationalwaves #science #lisa

What is Space-time? Space-time is a mathematical model that joins spaceand time into a single idea called a continuum. This four-dimensional continuum is known as Minkowski space. Combining these two ideas helped cosmology to understand how the universe works on the big level... In a relativistic universe, time cannot be separated from the three dimensions of space. This is because the observed rate at which time passes depends on an object's velocity relative to the observer. Also, the strength of any gravitational field slows the passage of time for an object as seen by an observer outside the field. General Theory of Relativity  describes how gravity affects the shape of space and flow of time. Imagine a stretched-out sheet. If you place a bowling ball in the middle of the sheet, the sheet will warp as the weight of the ball pushes down on it. If you place a baseball on the same sheet, it will roll towards the bowling ball. This is a simple design, and space doesn't act like a two-dimension bed sheet, but it can be applied to something like our solar system -- more massive objects like our sun can warp space and affect all the orbits... This new reality was that space and time, as physical constructs, have to be combined into a new mathematical/physical entity called 'space-time', because the equations of relativity show that both the space and time coordinates of any event must get mixed together by the mathematics, in order to accurately describe what we see. Because space consists of 3 dimensions, and time is 1-dimensional, space-time must, therefore, be a 4-dimensional object. When the word first got out that the expansion of the universe was accelerating, many astronomers questioned the results. They felt that the observations must be wrong, or the interpretation must be flawed. The whole concept was so difficult to believe because it requires significant changes in our understanding of the way the universe works. Say you step outside and throw a baseball up into the air. The gravity of Earth begins immediately to act on the baseball, slowing it down even as it rises into the air. The upward speed of the baseball slows until it stops at its peak, then gravity's pull causes it to drop down at an ever-increasing speed. What you can't see is that the baseball also has a tiny gravitational pull that acts upon Earth. Gravity always acts to pull matter together. Now consider a spaceship. If launched with enough speed, a spaceship will escape Earth's gravity to the extent that it will not fall back to the planet. However, it hasn't escaped the pull of Earth entirely. Though it travels away, the spaceship will be continuously slowed  just not to the point where it stops.These same concepts apply to the expansion of space. That expansion was launched in the Big Bang, and ever since then, each bit of matter in the universe has been attracted to every other bit by the force of gravity. This should have been slowing down the expansion. Before the discovery of dark energy, scientists had two models of how the universe's expansion would work. Whether or not the universe goes all the way to a Big Rip depends on what dark energy really is, and whether it will stay constant forever or fade away as suddenly as it appears to have arisen. And that we do not yet know. Meet the college dropout who invented the gravitational wave detector.  By any measure, Weiss has led an extraordinary life. Born in 1932 in Berlin, he and his family fled the Nazis. He grew up in New York City, on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, a street-smart kid with a gift for tinkering who built and sold his own high fidelity (hi-fi) systems. As an MIT undergrad, Weiss flunked out, and he later struggled to get tenure there. Still, he established himself as a leading physicist and worked for more than 40 years on LIGO, one of the most audacious experiments ever attempted. He works on it even now. “He’s the best person I know with a soldering iron,” says David Shoemaker, a LIGO physicist at MIT.  Shoemaker adds that Weiss’s foremost quality is empathy. A college dropout, Shoemaker credits Weiss with getting him into graduate school at MIT without an undergraduate degree. “He sought ways to bring out the best in me,” Shoemaker says. “He also took a rather irregular path, and I think because of that and just his nature, he is really interested in helping people.” Nearly 50 years ago, Rainer Weiss dreamed up a way to detect gravitational waves—infinitesimal ripples in spacetime predicted by Einstein’s theory of gravity, general relativity. Last September, that dream came true as 1000 physicists working with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), two huge detectors in Livingston, Louisiana, and Hanford, Washington, sensed a pulse of waves radiated by two massive black holes as they spiraled into each other a billion light-years away. The discovery makes Weiss, a physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, a sure bet to win a Nobel Prize, his peers say. At a local library today doing research 📝📚 I am going to be sending the research and notes I take to LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) for an upcoming research paper I am writing for them. I am specifically studying gravitational waves and Type Ia Supernovae. Today will be spent accessing data bases to collect any published research papers that will aid in what I am studying; I will then read the research papers, annotate them, create notes, and formulate questions.
