Day 22 - #31daysofgraves and the #anchor of both Captains William H. Reynalds (father and son). New Bedford is most famous for its whaling history. The port has seen the rise and fall of fortunes and history continues to cast influence over the city today. The downtown area has seen a significant revitalization in recent years, with New Bedford now the coolest place for art, culture and food & drinks. So a symbol like the anchor is ubiquitous in the area. William Hathaway Reynald, the son of William H. Reynald and Emily Howland Russell Reynald, was a notable figure in Victorian New Bedford. He was brought up in the city's private schools and likely felt the call of the sea early in his life, watching his father and others set sail at the harbor. At the age of 15, he began his career as a mariner aboard a whaling vessel. He took to the life, following in his father's footsteps and eventually becoming master of his own ship. He also delved into politics and served as a responsive of New Bedford in the Massachusetts legislature. Upon retiring from the seas in 1885, he settled in South Dartmouth and lived there until his death of pneumonia in 1913. Classic roses are a very popular flower choice for memorials, but sometimes something more unique is what suits your loved one best. A bird of paradise flower and tropical foliage decorate this marker.
