Mount Ngauruhoe, better known as ‘Mount Doom’ from Lord of the Rings is an active volcano in Tongariro National Park on the North Island of New Zealand. When I visited on my recent trip the weather was looking bad and I almost skipped it with snow showers forecast that day. Sure enough the forecast was right and I had to drive and hike through bad weather, but just before sunset the clouds started clearing up, and right at sunset, everything came together and the volcanoes and mountains appeared before me, with only one cloud left over the volcano turning a pinky red as if the lava inside was lighting it up. J.R.R Tolkien couldn’t have written a better ending
After a magical two and half weeks campervanning around South Island, we headed to North Island. With our trusty rental car, we drove around and stayed at Auckland, Tauranga, Rotorua, Lake Taupo, New Plymouth and Hamilton. The game plan was for my husband to work remotely while we travel from one place to another but this proved to be a challenge. Work kept him busy on most days but we still found time for the weekends. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ We spent our first weekend in Tauranga, the largest city in the Bay of Plenty. It is a perfect weekend getaway with the nearby beaches and harbour filled with cafes. We started off the morning by visiting a Farmers Market and then with our tummies filled with sausage sizzles, we climbed up Mount Maunganui which offered 360 views of the coastline and the harbour. After an afternoon siesta in the car, we walked along the beach towards Moturiki island that is connected by a man-made footbridge. We climbed up a random path and anxiously watched people cliff diving. The sun was setting so we lingered just for a little, sitting at rocks while staring at mesmerising blue ocean hit the rocks. That was the end of a perfect Saturday at Tauranga.
One of our top camping recommendations... Whitehorse Campsite at the base of Mt Cook. It’s pretty surreal to wake up this close to a snowy mountain... especially for a family from Australia! 🖤 #nzroadtrip#dcrewjuniors

What gets your heart racing and adrenaline pumping? 💪🏻 Queenstown is famous for being the extreme sports capital of the world, I mean they literally invented bungee jumping here of course they get that title! (Did you know that?!) Can you believe though, it took a mountain drive for me to feel that same way as jumping out a plane... Maybe it was the combination of icy conditions and the hairpin turns up the mountain, or maybe it was the thrill of what we’d discover next in this unequivocally beautiful road leading higher and higher. Either way, wondering what comes next over the ridgeline will forever give me the happy shivers and the best memories. 🙀
