The 1800s was an interesting time to be born as an adventure seeker. New lands were being discovered which were till then isolated from the outside world. A major part of exploration was drawing out maps. The access to maps has become so easy today that we rarely appreciate the efforts that would have gone into making of that map. The great trigonometric survey of India was launched to draw a map of the whole subcontinent. To help you appreciate the difficulties of such a task , I will share an incident from John Keay's book The Great Arc. Mapping the Himalayas was one of the toughest jobs. The terrain and extreme weather conditions made it impossible to map the region. To add to their problems , the survey party would often have to face attacks from local tribes, who were probably isolated from the outside world since eternity. The task was getting more and more difficult as the party proceeded towards Tibet. This problem was solved with an ingenious idea. The surveyors would dress up as Tibetan monks and would join the groups of other travelling monks. As the survey required sensitive equipment , special prayer wheels which are used by the Buddhist were made. Compass and other equipment was carefully concealed into these prefer wheels. The process to mapping took decades but the result was the most accurate map that had ever been made of India.
WICKSER, Josephine Wilhelm & GREEN, Mildred C. [A pictorial map of the Niagara River] A Romance Map of the Niagara Frontier. Buffalo & New York City: Whitney-Graham Company Inc., 1931. A map of the environs of the Niagara River, with vignettes of important landmarks and events on both the US and Canadian sides. Down the sides are 32 panels containing pertinent facts. Of interest is the logo of 'Zonta International founded Buffalo 1919', devoted to improving the legal, political and economic status of women, an organisation that continues to this day. Their first annual convention, 1921, adopted a code of ethics written by Josephine Wickser, the creator of this map. This was one of a series of 'Romance' maps' and was originally sold for 50 cents. A contemporary advert reads: 'These picture maps and notes of explanation will impress children, and help in the classroom. Teachers will like them'. @antiquemaps #antiquemaps#americanmap#antiquemapsandprints#geography#romancemap#instamap#artonpaper#londongallery#alteagallery#raremaps#cartography#america#20thcentury#oldmap#vintage#londongallery#1931#oldmaps#mayfair#niagara#geography
Yesterday we were busy tracking the migration of the swallows and the painted lady butterflies on our maps. We have been pointing out the migration pattern on maps within our books but I thought actually having maps on the wall where they can chart the migration themselves would bring a better understanding. They are just beginning to learn that the world is more than just what they see everyday. The idea that the birds and butterflies that are part of our every day life, came from somewhere else can be such an abstract concept. We will also begin tracking where we have been through the characters we have read in books. I can’t wait to see how this begins to spark their curiosity about the world. . The maps are simply wrapping paper from @papersource
