What do you do when someone interprets a kind act as outright hostility or "creepiness"?⠀ ⠀ It’s tough. My animal nature wants to fight back, especially when their lashing-out includes demands, threats, and insults. ⠀ ⠀ I know from numerous mistakes (thousands across my lifetime, perhaps) that reacting to anger with anger never works. Ever. But shit, sometimes it feels like the only option. ⠀ ⠀ Someone just hurt me, NOW THEY MUST PAY, is the thought that often appears, quick as lightning. ⠀ ⠀ In my training in psychology and Somatic Experiencing, I’ve learned a lot about the nervous system. When a human being feels “out of control,” when their anger seems to take over and they do, think, or feel things that they normally wouldn’t, it’s because a lower part of their brain is activated and actually does take control. The brain stem and limbic system will take over a mammal’s nervous system when that creature believes that he or she is in danger.⠀ ⠀ The good news is that humans can train their brains and their bodies. Through a number of techniques, including meditation, mindfulness-based CBT, and somatic-based trauma resolution, a human being is able to slow down the process of anger & reaction. ⠀ ⠀ From the space of slowing down and looking at one’s feelings, thoughts, and impulses, one is able to CHOOSE. In this freedom magic happens. ⠀ ⠀ When someone lashes out with anger, the animal within all of us wants to fight back. And if we were to really break things down, this process is of sending anger energy back and forth, typically escalating with every pass, is the sole basis for 99% of all shouting matches, fist fights, murders, and wars. ⠀ ⠀ So what would you like to choose? As a parent we all make many choices for our children. The ACT government and Transport Canberra should not be taking those decisions out of our hands! Mandated Active Travel is not a suitable transport option for children! I am not ok with the TC journey planner that suggest the best travel option for my children to get to school is a 12.6km ride (a daily total of 25.2kms 😮☹😤), along major roads with their 10kg bag with sports gear and laptop as a viable transport option.
