🌈What Does Color of Food Mean? ○○○ We eat food with our senses. While taste and smell of food plays an important role, most of us also prefer food of certain colors. ○○○ Apart from artificial coloring, many natural dyes have been used since centuries to color food: carotenoids, chlorophyll, anthocyanin and turmeric are the main ones: ○○○ ► Carotenoids– These impart red, yellow and orange color to food. Beta carotenoids are often used for coloring dairy based foods. ► Chlorophyll– This pigment imparts green color to plants. Many commercial mint/candy based foods are colored using chlorophyll. ► Anthocyanins– The rich color of certain types of grapes and berries can be attributed to this organic compound. Soft drinks, jellies, corn chips etc are often dyed with anthocyanins. ○○○ 🥗 ABOUT GREEN: “Eat your greens” –ma was right! This soothing color is very good for digestion. Green is also a calming color. Peas, leafy vegetables and other chlorophyll rich vegetables like lettuce, spinach and kale etc are rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber. Green is also associated with health, organic and wellness. Food in green color indicates wholesome, healthy meals. ○○○ ❤What is your favorite food color?
One of the principles of Functional Medicine is finding and treating the “root cause.” . Sometimes, it isn’t as simple as finding one root cause. Cupping was developed thousands of years ago and though the techniques have modernized, the original philosophy remains the same. Talk about the perfect summer lunch! @thefamilyfoodproject made this delectable cumin grilled eggplant dish 🍆 with our SoCal FarmBox:⁣ ⁣ “It’s grilling season but we don’t have a grill (yet), so I busted out my cast iron grill pan and got to work on these cumin grilled eggplant! Hot damn did they turn out good! Fun fact: 2 out of the 4 of us have had allergic reactions to eggplant so I’ll probably be eating this whole platter myself. Not complaining. Meanwhile, I’m thinking I may go with a flattop outdoor grill since we eat so many veggies that can slip through the cracks. Anyone have one they love?⁣ ⁣ ➕Cumin grilled eggplant: slice Chinese eggplant lengthwise and drizzle with avocado oil, sea salt and ground cumin. Grill and/or bake until they are soft and gooey. (#protip: put them cut side down first to get grill marks, then flip and either bake or grill until soft). "One of the factors affecting your child’s chronic condition may be the genetic mutation called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR). MTHFR affects detoxification. . This is a type of folate that crosses the blood brain barrier (folic acid does not) needed to make the brain methylate. . The methylation process requires folate in the brain. 🧠 . While not a common topic of dinner conversation, it’s essential to discuss your bowel habits with your doctor, as they are an important indicator of your digestive health… . 👉Especially if you are NOT going.👈 . A crucial duty of our intestinal tract is to remove the waste from our digestive system. . So what happens if the system encounters a problem? . It “backs up,” “overflows” and can cause: 📌Nausea 📌Vomiting 📌Constipation 📌Diarrhea . Then those toxins get reabsorbed into the bloodstream, poisoning your entire system. . Constipation is a big problem, especially in the summer. . You may be more dehydrated from the heat, causing the colon to lose water. . Many people turn to colon cleanses for relief and detoxification. . When considering a colon cleanse, I advise that you see a healthcare professional. . 🚫I don't commonly recommend OTC laxatives like Senna, Dulcolax (Bisacodyl), etc. which are fine for occasional constipation but can be very harsh and abrasive to the colon if overused.🚫 . Chronic constipation is an issue for so many people. . ⚠️One of the more serious concern is that many people don’t even know they have chronic constipation, and think going to the bathroom twice a week is okay.⚠️ . ✅You need to go at least once to two times a day! . When the liver is healthy, so is the colon. . Normally, the liver will try to cleanse itself of toxins through sweat, urine, and stool. . But, if it becomes overburdened with toxins, those will spill over into other organs—like the skin. . Many common skin issues like eczema, acne, rosacea, and others are the result of digestive problems. . A liver cleanse is sometimes paired with a colon cleanse for better detoxification results. . ✅A trick I like is to have a spoonful of extra virgin olive oil at 10pm for at least a week to promote better liver flush. . . So, what exactly is Vitamin D?⠀ ☀️.⠀ Also known as 'the sunshine vitamin' (for reasons that will become obvious), Vitamin D is present in our bodies in many forms.  Several areas of our body (skin, blood, liver and kidneys) are involved in converting it into an ‘active’ form, the starting point for this is primarily our skin’s exposure to sunlight, however.⠀ 🌞.⠀ Discovered in the 1920s, it’s one of 13 essential vitamins meaning we cannot produce it ourselves, so we need to consume it in our diets.  However, vitamin D is unique in its action on the body and is actually more like a hormone (a chemical messenger).⠀ 🌝.⠀ Why do we need it?⠀ ☀️.⠀ Vitamin D supports healthy bones and teeth by regulating calcium metabolism and calcification of bones, it increases the absorption of Calcium in our guts and other organs, so good Vitamin D status is as important to healthy bones as eating calcium rich foods.⠀ 🌞.⠀ Vitamin D is useful to many parts of the body, we know this because nearly all body tissues contain Vitamin D receptors or VDRs (including the brain). Part of a healthy diet is also having a good relationship with food. Being fearful of sugar, red meat, and pasta is no way to live life, and it causes unnecessary, harmful stress on the body. Anti-Inflammatory Turmeric Green Smoothie - using fresh turmeric!  Turmeric is a root like ginger. It has a super bright orange center that turns anything it touches yellow.  Turmeric is known as the “golden spice” because of it contains curcumin. Curcumin is a:  1. Polyphenol- which basically just means it’s an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory. It helps the health of your cells.  2. Can reduce pain - including Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness from training and exercising.  3. Is beneficial in the management of degenerative eye conditions.  4. And it has protective effects against cancer and aging as well.  Fun fact: you usually hear about curcumin and turmeric - but there are actually three types of “curcuminoids” including: curcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin, and demethoxycurcumin. You can get super high concentrations of each and clinical trials have shown it’s safe even at high doses.  It’s not super “bioavailable” which is one down side to curcumin and turmeric - you can’t absorb it very well. But supplement companies have found their ways around that - and you can also add black pepper and that boosts absorption.  This recipe has just a little black pepper in it for that reason - but you can’t taste it at all. It’s a mildly sweet, refreshing smoothie that is really easy to make. Plus, with it’s anti-inflammatory benefits, it’s perfect for before or after training.
