In college, I tracked my periods on my wall calendar. A red dot (so subtle!) marked day 1 of my period. . It wasn’t very advanced, but it was when I first started paying attention to my not-so-monthly cycle. Back then I also read paperbacks and kept a grocery list on a magnetic notepad on my fridge. . I don’t do any of those things anymore though because – hey, there’s an app for that! . If you’re like me, you keep everything on your phone now, and there are even some amazing fertility tracking apps you can get, too. . These apps don’t just help you remember when you last got your period – the best ones can accurately predict when you’ll be ovulate each month. You can use that information to help you get (or not get) pregnant. . Yes – the right fertility tracking app can replace hormonal birth control if it is used correctly! . But if you’re going to rely on cycle tracking to predict your fertility, it’s critical that you use a reliable app – and they aren’t all created equal and not every fertility tracking app you can download is actually useful. . How to Reverse Heart Disease⁉️ . Dr. Dean Ornish was the first such physician who demonstrated that heart disease can be prevented. Furthermore, his programs not only prevented heart disease, but once established can reverse heart disease with easy lifestyle changes and without the use of surgery or medication. . 🔑Diet is Key to Eliminating Risk of Heart Disease🔑 . In my clinic we run organic acids tests on patients even without any signs of advanced heart disease and we often see early warning signs of CoQ10 levels being low by measuring hydroxymethylglutarate levels in the urine. . Abnormal hydroxymethylglutarate is representative of low CoQ10 levels and will show up as an easy to identify marker decades before problems like a heart attack or congestive heart failure occur. . Therefore, CoQ10 supplementation can provide some improvement in patients. . The organic acids test panels also include markers for oxidative stress, such as 8-OH-DG which is strongly correlated with onset of heart disease. . Do you know the difference between a food allergy and a food intolerance? . ⚡️Food allergy . Food allergy is usually an immediate reaction . For example, my daughters, if they eat peanuts, there will immediately be a reaction. They will have hives, oral symptoms, like tingling, and probably throat closing. . What happens in the body is that your body is sensitized to peanuts, so it develop an immunoglobulin called IgE. The body’s immune response instantly makes that to defend itself . So each time you eat a food you are allergic to, the immune response is even higher. . 🐢 Food intolerance . Food intolerances are usually a delayed sensitivity. . So the immune response isn’t as quick, and the symptoms might not be as sudden and noticeable. . For example, if I drink milk I experience fatigue, problems sleeping, gut issues, inflammation in the gut, and a GI response. . The symptoms of food intolerance are not clearly defined and it’s not always immediately after -- it can be days to a week after we eat the food. . . The good new is that you can find out if you have any food intolerance with saliva, stool or blood test. Here at Revitalize we typically use the Blood test. . And the treatment is relatively simple. It usually involves healing the gut and avoidance of the foods. . And you want to find out if a food sensitivity could be causing you to feel “off”, because it’s seems like now there is a lot more food sensitivities than there was when I was growing up. . 📍Mental fog 📍Constipation 📍Fatigue 📍Feeling drugged or sleepy after you eat a food 📍Diarrhea 📍Bloating . When was the last time you thought about sex? . (Did she really just say that?) (Yup, she did!!) . The thing is, one of the most important things I ask new patient is, about the state of their libido & sex life in my Health History Questionnaire. . This important area of our health so often gets brushed aside in conventional medicine. . Of course there's no universal standard for what determines a healthy or "normal" sex drive--that's unique to each of us. . Sex drive is not just something nice to have--it's a huge marker of our wellbeing! . When our desire goes M.I.A., it often means there is some aspect of our wellness that is asking for our attention & care. . And I believe that as part of inspired health, you deserve to feel turned on! . Some fun facts about your menstrual cycle & the hormones that “turn-you-on” . 💃At the beginning of a cycle, all hormones low, and desire will most likely be lower . 💃Mid-cycle, estrogen, and testosterone both spike, so this can make you slightly more aggressive & receptive at same time . 💃This shift ☝️ in hormones can explain why sometimes, woman are interested in sex more as cuddling, or emotional bonding, or just the comfort of skin on skin contact, & other times they’re more like “fuck me now, please” & they just want, an uncomplicated, good old romp in the hay. . 💃Women with higher T levels may tend to have more of the aggressive type drive, & women with higher estrogen levels, may tend to be more receptive/seductive. . 💃Many women notice a libido peak premenstrually, when progesterone starts to fall, relative to T levels. Did you know that taking vitamin d on an empty stomach or separate from food reduces effectiveness? It requires fat for proper absorption. Nearly all of our patients come in with a vitamin D deficiency, probably because we spend so much time indoors. This is the best I’ve felt in awhile.  Seeing a naturopathic doctor has paid off so well. It’s taken the guess work out of my health.  I feel my body is finally reacting in a positive way to all the healthy things I was doing for it since I started seeing my doctor who has helped me by getting me on homeopathic remedies for lower thyroid function, to stabilize my cycle and hormones, and to regulate the health of my gut.  Before my mood was pretty middle of the road- it took a lot to get me excited, and it took a lot to get me upset (aside from the one crazy day before my period where I would rage). Now I have more days of excitement and being my old goofy/giddy self that I didn’t even realize had gone away for some time.  Couple that with how I’m no longer insanely bloated after I eat. My stomach no longer has that heavy uncomfortable feeling post munch.  I’m getting back to my happy place with my health without having to be insanely rigid with how I eat, nor am I working out like a banshee, like I used to have to do to get results.  I’m eating mostly plant based aside from eating raw cheese and pasture raised meats AND I eat quality chocolate (in moderation) daily. I’m not deprived and what I’m eating keeps me satiated. I go to the gym about 3x per week, walk the dogs 2 miles almost daily, and run 2 miles 1-2x per week. Yoga/stretching almost daily, as well as plenty of time out in nature.  So here I am at 31 years old- an age in which I’ve been warned all my life that my health will start to go to shit when I reach my 30’s and that it’s harder to lose weight and stay in shape- in the best/sustainable shape of my life without having to overdo the dieting/working out, or without having to heavily deprive myself. “Still alive but I’m barely breathing”🌬🌪🎤 🎶 . You could say my HR is over the norm of 100 bpm with palpitations present intermittently. My respiratory rate suggests dyspnea, as in seen in anxiety — putting my clinical medicine knowledge to use as I explain how I’m feeling this exam season 🙃 . Does chocolate *really* lower stress? . . . Yup! . In fact, chocolate is an adaptogen. . Adaptogens are herbs or substances that help modify the body’s hormonal stress response. Common adaptogenic herbs are things like ginseng, rhodiola, tulsi basil, and ashwagandha. . Studies have shown that 40 grams of dark chocolate for 14 days reduced cortisol and adrenaline levels and helped to normalize stress-related differences in energy metabolism. Milk chocolate apparently yielded the same results. (who knew 🤷🏻‍♀️) . ⚠️However, a word of caution⚠️ . Lead is common in chocolate in countries that still use leaded gas….contaminates! Be careful! . [Nigeria is the main country to be careful of!] . How can you include it in your life (without binging?) .
