Liberty Cap is pretty cool, but the thing that stands out to me the most in this picture are all the different species of trees, side-by-side, and the fact that they’re all “evergreens,” which means they don’t shed their leaves seasonally… which means no fall colors!
Sometimes you just need to get out of your routine and go explore someplace new. . Had a blast this morning with @tonyd256 exploring @pinnaclesnps. We left San Francisco after 9pm and woke up before 5am to be on this ridge for sunrise. . Definitely feeling tired, but also really psyched to get to see this fascinating place and have a really fun morning running around the park. . #findyourpark#findyourpeak
While I definitely still enjoy editing and creating video, it's so easy now to shoot and edit your own little clips right on your phone that are more than suitable enough for social media. For this clip of Sean and I attempting a traverse, I used @gopro's Quik Stories app. Don't let a perceived "lack of equipment" stop you from creating what you want to create!
WINTER DRIVING: Finally got some nice deep snow this weekend! Another first of the season was encountering snow and ice on the forest service road headed up to the trailhead. A good reminder to point out is that sometimes the road conditions can drastically change during the day. It may be fine on the way up, but while you are out hiking, conditions will change. All those cars passing will have packed the snow down tight. Once the sun rises enough to hit the snow, it will melt some, which will then refreeze into a sheet of ice when the sun passes back over the ridge (and this can all happen in a matter of a couple hours this time of year with so little direct sunlight). When you get back to your car in the afternoon to drive down, you will be left with the awful reality that the road you drove up just fine is now a sheet of ice. No amount of 4 wheel drive or clearance will help you with ice, period. The only assistance you can receive to help fight the ice are a good set of winter tires and chains. If you don’t have either of those, maybe park a little further down, and enjoy the opportunity to put a few more miles in your legs ;) Always assess the risk while driving up those forest service roads; imagine driving back down in worse conditions. Is there a cliff you could slide off? Are there points where you could turn around? You’re probably driving slow on those bumpy roads anyway, so take that extra time to really observe and reflect on what is worth it. Have any other winter driving tips for safely getting up and down mountain roads? I’d love to hear them!!
