Fall is our favorite season at FireFlour. We get all of the feels - friendship, love, accomplishment, gratitude... It's a time to celebrate the hard work of the season drawing to a close. Excited to be back at Round the Bend Farm and working with the amazing team here this Fall! The past couple weeks have been a whirlwind of food/farm playground. I've been harvesting and preparing wild mushrooms (the picture is actually a basket of honey mushrooms and hen of the woods that my mom gathered), processing acorns for flour, nixtamalizing corn in wood ash for new local cornbread recipes, drying lots of fruits and veggies for winter, helping with fruit jams, blanching and freezing nettles, making bone stock and lard, and oh so much more! Check out @rtbfarm to see more of my food projects while I'm here. . So far my favorite creation has been Honey Gold Cornbread with Bacon (99% local--only import is baking powder). It showcases a lot of the awesome ingredients from the farm and community--Paradox Acres pork which Shaun brines and smokes into bacon, local corn nixtamalized with our own hardwood ash, RTB eggs and goat milk, and Hannah's Honey from the bee boxes. This is what the Basic Pantry Analysis I've been developing for @porvenirdesign is all about--being able to walk into the kitchen and cook something awesome from all your own ingredients.
