Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson was the first man to break the 9.8s barrier in the 100m dash (breaking his own WR of 9.83s) with a time of 9.79s in the Seoul Games 1988 during which time he could squat 700lbs & bench press 450lbs. Not convinced? That’s good. One athlete’s performance is hardly an indication of correlation or causation despite what the majority of online “fitness professionals” would like you to believe.  Let’s look at a study cited in Special Strength Training Manual for Coaches by Verkhoshansky (2011) aimed to examine the relationship between maximal (P0) & explosive strength(J) with the time to complete: a forward run (10m), a short shuttle (12x4m; 11 lateral changes), long shuttle (6x8m; 5 lateral changes), & a fan (12x4m; 11 both fwd & lateral changes) of 19 high-level tennis players. 👆These abilities tend to be more applicable to a wider array of sports than just pure linear speed (such as the 100m dash). A strong positive correlation (r = 0.433, n = 19) was observed between J & the time to complete the specific run tests. The author suggests that based on these results to increase specific speed ability, one should employ explosive strength training, primarily, jumping exercises. Interestingly, there was not a correlation between P0 & the time of completion, but a strong positive correlation (r = 0.433, n = 19) was observed between the athletes P0 & J. The author suggests based on these findings that for one to must increase P0 to increase J & consequently the speed of these specific types of displacements.  The author then examined the same relationships using high-level athletes specialized in other sports disciplines that had higher strength preparedness than that of the tennis players. No correlation was observed between the strength & time of completion of these athletes. The author concluded that this suggests that the speed also is dependent upon specific technical skill, which can be improved through the execution of
