Scenes from our inaugural EDR Road Trip / Design Tour. Several of us caravaned together this past weekend to Houston, Texas, intent on expanding our appreciation of architecture outside New Orleans. Featured are some of our favorites, including the Asia Society Texas Center, the Glassell School of Art by @stevenhollarchitects at @mfahouston, the @jamesturell exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts, and lastly, a private residence designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, with an addition by @kirkseynews . . . #eskewdumezripple #edrtravels #design #architecture #texas #houston #art #artanddesign #roadtrip
On conceptual design - Zaha Hadid said architecture is never simple shelter. It should excite people and make them think. So I think the form of the building is very important. When I went to University of Pennsylvania, I did a lot of work in digital programs, like Maya, creating what some might think would be impossible buildings. And although they’re of course not real, I think such exercises can provide a higher level of imagination, with the ultimate goal of making the perfect space. People can look at these theoretical spaces, and think, and imagine a different life, one beyond their current understanding. - Feici Liu, Designer [Attached are several theoretical renders Feici completed while in architectural school. They explore basic skills in Maya, seams and bridging, with the ultimate intent of employing these skills in designing a tower near Central Park in Manhattan. The third image uses a pixel concept to create a model one might develop over time from such building blocks.] . . . #designersattheirdesk #workplacewednesdays #eskewdumezripple #maya #architecture #design #render #theoretical #conceptdesign #conceptualdesign #3d #maya3d #digitalart
Education is a fundamental tool for preserving the environment and the personal health of a community. Visitors to the @southcarolinaaquarium weave their way through a series of habitats that mimic the flow of water from mountain streams to the Atlantic Ocean. The experience culminates in an upper atrium, allowing users to experience the natural environment in the open air. The project ultimately aims to stimulate a sense of stewardship for marine habitats via a better appreciation of such environments . . . #eskewdumezripple #architecture #design #buildingcommunity #conservation #aquarium #charleston #southcarolina
The Pythian building was lovingly restored by studioWTA and Landis Construction for @gcegram and has received a Louisiana Landmarks Award, AIA LA Merit Award, AIA NO Honor Award and a Nola award from the downtown development district! @pythianmarket designed by @eskewdumezripple is now open! have you been? #repost @eskewdumezripple with @get_repost ・・・ We had a great time touring our project with @studiowta, the newly opened @pythianmarket. studioWTA reworked the historic facade, first built in 1908 and hidden until recently under midcentury cladding. Within, we made space for a food hall and 14 market vendors, all local, and strived to instill a sense of community honoring the building's historic roots . . . #studiowta #eskewdumezripple #buildingcommunity #architecture #design #pythianmarket #neworleans #followyournola #nola #foodhall #hospitalitydesign #hospitality#historic #historicpreservation #neworleans

On becoming a well-rounded architect - If I had any advice to future architects, it would be learn how to build stuff along the way while you’re drawing. Get your feet wet—go out and frame something, hang studs, lay concrete, float sheet-rock. No one else can take that experience from you. Having that practical common-sense on how to put it all together will make you a better-rounded architect. - Rick Dupont, Construction Contract Administrator [Rick recently announced his retirement after several decades of professional practice. Throughout his tenure, it was rare to see him at his desk. Rather, he could be found on job sites, overseeing the construction of some of the most vital projects the studio has completed: Keller Library, The Louisiana State Museum, the Reinventing the Crescent Masterplan. A sincere thank you, and we hope you enjoy retirement!] . . . #designersattheirdesk #workplacewednesdays #architecture #eskewdumezripple #design #buildingcommunity

On craftsmanship in design – Architecture is becoming increasingly reliant on digital design and fabrication. This is taking the profession into innovative territory. However, I feel it's necessary to remain connected to more traditional and hands-on craftsmanship. As an avid carpenter, I’ve made a hobby out of designing and building wood-strip canoes, kayaks, and pirogues. Aesthetics are important, but dependability, durability, longevity, safety, comfort, and performance must all be factored in as well. The problem-solving process of working all of this out on paper and with my hands to produce a finished product is incredibly rewarding, and what initially drove me to become an architect. - Kyle Digby, Designer [Kyle, in addition to refining his craft outside the studio, has worked on several large-scale projects for Holy Cross University Simulation Lab and the recent renovation of Children’s Hospital. He recently completed two pirogues, for his wife, Emily, and his dog Kyle Jr.] . . . #designersattheirdesk #workplacewednesdays #eskewdumezripple #architecture #design #woodwork #pirogue #craftsmanship #woodworking

"The Rosa Keller branch of the New Orleans public library system is a living example of nascent efforts to more effectively manage stormwater in New Orleans, with its “rain gardens” aimed at capturing and slowing down heavy rains." On choreographing thermal experiences - For the past century, we’ve been enclosing our buildings with extremely thin, airtight, insulated envelopes with a thermally homogeneous interior condition on one side and—in New Orleans—the very hot and humid exterior on the other. Buildings account for almost half of the total US energy use, most of this comprised of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Passively cooling, dehumidifying, and naturally ventilating spaces along a building’s exterior can create buffer zones that would take a significant load off our HVAC systems. This would also create a spectrum of contrasting thermal experiences: from the least comfortable, hot, humid exterior, to a warm but comfortable transition space, to the typical air-conditioned interior. We could strategically place these thermally distinct spaces to enhance the occupant’s sequence of experiences. - Mike Johnson, Designer [Mike was one of the designers in our studio who worked on “The Ecotone,” a grand-prize winning façade competition submission led by our 2017 Research Fellow, Liz McCormick. Asking how the exterior might enhance employee health and happiness, the facade blurs the line between inside and out, creating a diverse community of occupiable spaces within a variety of micro-climates. Check out Liz’s blog post at bit.ly/facadecompetition and some more of Mike and team’s work for the submission!]. . . . #designersattheirdesk #workplacewednesdays #architecture #eskewdumezripple #design #architecturaldesign #facade #facadedesign #ecotone #render #rendering #drawing #exteriordesign
This weekend we celebrated the grand opening of Miller Park. The park is the new, vibrant centerpiece to the rapidly developing Innovation District in downtown Chattanooga. Rooted in extensive community engagement, it is an inclusive and flexible open space where all residents can come together for a wide variety of programming and events. Cheers to @cityofchattanooga Mayor @andy_berke #rivercitycompany and our collaborators @eskewdumezripple and @hkarchitects! • • • #millerparkcha @downtownchatt #landscapearchitecture #publicspace #urbandesign #nooga #gigcity #spackmanmossopmichaels #eskewdumezripple
The drone is back in action today, doing some initial site documentation as we enter construction for Linear Park (a project in collaboration with @manningarchitects), a public plaza and walkway spanning the length of the New Orleans Convention Center. We also managed to snag this downtown panorama in the process ;) [swipe left for the full panoramic effect, and credit to @mark_thor for the drone pilot skills] . . . #eskewdumezripple #architecture #design #neworleans #buildingcommunity #drone #dji #dronelife #pano #panorama #followyournola #dronestagram #skyline
Our ribbon-cutting for Miller Park was a tremendous success! Beyond simply our pavilion design and the architectural exercise, the project was a wonderful example of how an engaged community can enhance the design process. Thanks to all who participated in any of our community sessions, those who came out for the opening, and a very special thanks to our leaders in design on the project, @spackmanmossopmichaels and @hkarchitects! . . . @cityofchattanooga #chattanooga #design #architecture #millerpark #grandopening #ribboncutting #buildingcommunity #noogagram #livelocallytn #eskewdumezripple #spackmanmossopmichaels
Our ribbon-cutting for #millerpark in Chattanooga is this Friday! Led by @spackmanmossopmichaels, the project, a community driven effort, involves a reimagining of Miller Park, with accompanying pavilion designed by EDR. We'll be in attendance, so come out and join us for some music, merriment, and an interactive LED installation courtesy of #theenterprisecenter. Hope to see you there! On thoughtfulness in design - A word that has always resonated with me, and reflects what I want to do in my career, is the word thoughtful. I know for me personally—and architects in general—we have a tendency early on to focus on pure spatial quality: how everything fits together, rather than how it will feel when you walk inside. Without taking the design to that next level of refinement, it can lead to a very sterile or cold environment. We put all this care and consideration into designing our homes. I try to bring a similar mentality to the spaces I work on. I see this approach taking root in projects other people have worked on in the studio. The Shop at the CAC, for example, has this wonderful aesthetic, an oversized sort of residential feel, that is very considerate in its execution. It seems more and more spaces are going this way. - Haley Robinson, Associate [Haley, in addition to leading several large-scale architectural projects within the studio, recently completed a renovation of her home. The before and after pictures shown are a wonderful distillation of her thoughtful approach to design, one that extends to her work in the studio.] . . . #designersattheirdesk #workplacewednesdays #architecture #eskewdumezripple #design #interiordesign #architecturaldesign #renovation #diy #homerenovation #remodel #beforeandafter #craft #homedecor #reno #homeimprovement #renovationproject #renovationinspiration
A peek at some of the green infrastructure we designed for @wj_palmisano and their new headquarters. Rather than bury it underground, the stormwater management features are celebrated, with the main entry shepherding employees and visitors through a raingarden that handles a majority of the site’s stormwater. #buildbetter . . . #buildingcommunity #palmisano #greeninfrastructure #stormwatermanagement #resiliency #resilience #nola #neworleans #eskewdumezripple
