Our newest render for LSU's upcoming Center for Advanced Learning and Simulation (CALS) envisions a repurposed structure hosting state-of-the-art academic programming, allowing students to learn and train in a virtual hospital setting. Beyond simulation technology and teaching facilities, the project also fulfills a critical objective of the Master Plan, which is the creation of an engaging, pedestrian-focused campus center and a new "front door" to a visionary campus program. #eskewdumezripple #architecture #design #buildingcommunity #neworleans #lsu #highered

On the value of community engagement - When I look back on the portfolio of project’s in the firm’s history, one frequently stands out. We talk a lot about building community, about the mission and vision of the firm. Keller Library encompassed all those goals at one critical moment in time. At its core, Hurricane Katrina exposed large issues in this city—and country—that we’re still dealing with today. How do you balance the rights of the individual while accommodating the greater good? It’s a question at the heart of any worthwhile community engagement. And if anything, that project showed the true value of that engagement, because the idea for it was truly born from the neighborhood collective, the community standing up and saying ‘this is more than just a library, we deserve a place at the table and a say in our future.” When you look at the mission of this firm, it involves supporting just that: recognizing that we can be a platform for something greater than just designing beautiful buildings. That we can change our little corner of the world if we nurture a culture and a value system in the office that supports this notion. - Mark Ripple, Principal and Director of Operations [Mark, in his role as Director of Operations, has been instrumental in much of the firm’s greatest successes throughout the years—notably in several projects of community engagement and participation. The project he mentions, the Rosa F. Keller Library and Community Center, serves as a template for such outreach. It was the heart of the rebuilt Broadmoor neighborhood, one famously identified in a 2006 urban planning study that suggested razing the area following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Nearly a decade later, the project serves as a testament to community resolve and the role architecture and design play in urban revitalization.] #designersattheirdesk #workplacewednesdays #eskewdumezripple #buildingcommunity #architecture #design #neworleans
Much of the rhythm of New Orleans is born of its proximity to the Mississippi River. Our design for Crescent Park—a project in partnership with @hargreavesassociates, @michaelmaltzanarchitecture, and @adjayeassociates—strived to reconnect citizens with the city's simple reason for being. A conscious decision was made to build upon the layers of history and character imbued in the site, resulting in a vibrant community asset that is evocative, timeless, and tangible. #eskewdumezripple #buildingcommunity #architecture #design #urbandesign #crescentpark #neworleans #followyournola #nola #fridayfeature
On inspiration in the changing urban environment - If you look at cities today, and particularly ones experiencing rapid growth, it’s interesting to look at what they put their attention to. Is it to restore what’s already there, or is it to fold something new into the current fabric? Or both? As someone who grew up in Houston, it’s super interesting to see the changes that are being made and viewing that change through the lens of architecture. The Taniguchi designed Asia Society Texas Center is a remarkable exercise in precision and accuracy. The transition from material to material is seamless, and it’s introduced a whole new art form into the city. On the opposite end of the spectrum, not many people knew there’s a Frank Lloyd Wright house in Houston. It’s little hidden gems that you can find within a city and your surroundings that can inspire you. - Cameron Goldsmith, Designer [Cameron, as a participant in our recent studio field trip to Houston, organized a last-minute stop to Houston’s only Frank Lloyd Wright designed home, the Thaxton House. The house, after being renovated several times over the years in a departure of Wright’s original vision, was recently restored by its owner, who hired Bob Inaba of Kirksey Architects to resurrect and re-install the original design.] #designersattheirdesk #workplacewednesdays #architecture #design #eskewdumezripple #buildingcommunity #franklloydwright #houston #taniguchi #edrtravels

On financial transparency - To me there are three primary reasons for being transparent about how your business is doing with staff. First, your staff is critical to the success of your business. If they don’t know where you’re going, they can’t help you get there. The second is if you’re not giving someone accurate information, they will likely make up their own facts and act on what they think is happening. Establishing that level of transparency puts everyone on the same page. And finally, as we nurture staff to move up and mature in their career, they inevitably have a greater impact on the business side of design. And so the more tools you can give them to understand the financial side, the better they will do as they take on project manager roles and gain those skills. It’s creating a foundation for success. - Jenifer Navard, Principal and Director of Finance [Jenifer, in her role as Director of Finance, is crucial to not only managing the financial health of the practice, but communicating that health to our staff. Last year she presented at PSMJ on a topic most companies know is important, but rarely know how to execute: financial transparency. On inspiration in architecture – A lot of my inspiration comes from movies, particularly science fiction movies.  I still remember the experience of watching ‪Blade Runner‬ as a kid, which has its own immersive architecture.  It’s familiar, but it’s strange. I visited the location featured in the finale of the movie much later, which is just this beautiful building in LA known as the Bradbury Building. It’s what I’m drawn to in my personal aspirations for my work, when I’m looking for inspiration. Similar to how movies function, I try to create an experiential narrative in my work. Some of it was inspired by Douglas Darden, and a project I did in architecture school that set up an unusual framework to talk about familiar experiences. It can ultimately force you to think about things a little differently. - Gianna Morelli, Designer [Gianna’s work blends the familiar with a modern vision of the future. Featured are a photo of the building she visited featured in the end of Blade Runner, the Bradbury Building, as well as conceptual drawings from her M.C. Escher inspired series of underground cities. On energy efficiency and an integrated team - If you look back at the history of architecture, and the way we’re trained, and the way the profession has evolved, we spend so much time thinking about the experience of a space—how to create it and morph it. Typically, in the past, anything that couldn’t be seen we delegated to someone else, often engineers. We would ask them to make the building stand, make it comfortable, and we’ve historically focused on how things look visually. More and more, though, we’ve realized that’s not a sustainable way of looking at the profession. With energy modeling, you need everyone on board from the beginning. Architectural, electrical, mechanical, structural, it all needs to be taken into consideration, and you need someone that intimately understands all four to make buildings that perform better. When teams working together and speaking together make energy a priority, we’re more aware of its impact, and empower ourselves to control it. For too long in design it was an afterthought. - Waleed AlGhamdi, Sustainability Enabler [Waleed, as our Sustainability Enabler, is tasked with the often technical challenge of energy modeling for our buildings, running analyses to understand the impact different schemes have on the performance of our designs. To this end, he challenges our teams to marry the development of high performance, energy efficient buildings, with aesthetic considerations. Pictured are his visualizations run for a recent energy study on designs for a new building construction in Mississippi.] . . . #designersattheirdesk #workplacewednesdays #eskewdumezripple #architecture #design #buildingcommunity #energymodeling #sustainability #ecofriendly #energyefficient

On perspective in design - I’m intrigued by the way in which design can be a synthesis of diverse areas of thought. My background is in ecology and perceptual science, and also architecture and studio art. In all of my design work so far, I’ve strived to bridge those different areas of thought and form something provoking. Perceptual science, and studying depth perception, inspired an architectural studio and a structure that takes an understanding of the way we sense our world and pushes it to a more personal reflection. I think the common thread is understanding people, and what it means to be human, from many perspectives. When we do that, we can design for these perspectives, and make a more enjoyable, natural, and compelling experience. - Sam Gochman, Research Fellow [Sam’s work bridges biological and perceptual sciences in expanding our understanding of the built and natural environment. On conceptual design - Zaha Hadid said architecture is never simple shelter. It should excite people and make them think. So I think the form of the building is very important. When I went to University of Pennsylvania, I did a lot of work in digital programs, like Maya, creating what some might think would be impossible buildings. And although they’re of course not real, I think such exercises can provide a higher level of imagination, with the ultimate goal of making the perfect space. People can look at these theoretical spaces, and think, and imagine a different life, one beyond their current understanding. - Feici Liu, Designer [Attached are several theoretical renders Feici completed while in architectural school. They explore basic skills in Maya, seams and bridging, with the ultimate intent of employing these skills in designing a tower near Central Park in Manhattan. On becoming a well-rounded architect - If I had any advice to future architects, it would be learn how to build stuff along the way while you’re drawing. Get your feet wet—go out and frame something, hang studs, lay concrete, float sheet-rock. No one else can take that experience from you. Having that practical common-sense on how to put it all together will make you a better-rounded architect. - Rick Dupont, Construction Contract Administrator [Rick recently announced his retirement after several decades of professional practice. On craftsmanship in design – Architecture is becoming increasingly reliant on digital design and fabrication. This is taking the profession into innovative territory. However, I feel it's necessary to remain connected to more traditional and hands-on craftsmanship. As an avid carpenter, I’ve made a hobby out of designing and building wood-strip canoes, kayaks, and pirogues. Aesthetics are important, but dependability, durability, longevity, safety, comfort, and performance must all be factored in as well. The problem-solving process of working all of this out on paper and with my hands to produce a finished product is incredibly rewarding, and what initially drove me to become an architect. - Kyle Digby, Designer [Kyle, in addition to refining his craft outside the studio, has worked on several large-scale projects for Holy Cross University Simulation Lab and the recent renovation of Children’s Hospital. On choreographing thermal experiences - For the past century, we’ve been enclosing our buildings with extremely thin, airtight, insulated envelopes with a thermally homogeneous interior condition on one side and—in New Orleans—the very hot and humid exterior on the other. Buildings account for almost half of the total US energy use, most of this comprised of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Passively cooling, dehumidifying, and naturally ventilating spaces along a building’s exterior can create buffer zones that would take a significant load off our HVAC systems. This would also create a spectrum of contrasting thermal experiences: from the least comfortable, hot, humid exterior, to a warm but comfortable transition space, to the typical air-conditioned interior. We could strategically place these thermally distinct spaces to enhance the occupant’s sequence of experiences. - Mike Johnson, Designer [Mike was one of the designers in our studio who worked on “The Ecotone,” a grand-prize winning façade competition submission led by our 2017 Research Fellow, Liz McCormick. Asking how the exterior might enhance employee health and happiness, the facade blurs the line between inside and out, creating a diverse community of occupiable spaces within a variety of micro-climates. On thoughtfulness in design - A word that has always resonated with me, and reflects what I want to do in my career, is the word thoughtful. I know for me personally—and architects in general—we have a tendency early on to focus on pure spatial quality: how everything fits together, rather than how it will feel when you walk inside. Without taking the design to that next level of refinement, it can lead to a very sterile or cold environment. We put all this care and consideration into designing our homes. I try to bring a similar mentality to the spaces I work on. I see this approach taking root in projects other people have worked on in the studio. The Shop at the CAC, for example, has this wonderful aesthetic, an oversized sort of residential feel, that is very considerate in its execution. It seems more and more spaces are going this way. - Haley Robinson, Associate [Haley, in addition to leading several large-scale architectural projects within the studio, recently completed a renovation of her home. The before and after pictures shown are a wonderful distillation of her thoughtful approach to design, one that extends to her work in the studio.] . . . #designersattheirdesk #workplacewednesdays #architecture #eskewdumezripple #design #interiordesign #architecturaldesign #renovation #diy #homerenovation #remodel #beforeandafter #craft #homedecor #reno #homeimprovement #renovationproject #renovationinspiration
A peek at some of the green infrastructure we designed for @wj_palmisano and their new headquarters. Rather than bury it underground, the stormwater management features are celebrated, with the main entry shepherding employees and visitors through a raingarden that handles a majority of the site’s stormwater. #buildbetter . . . #buildingcommunity #palmisano #greeninfrastructure #stormwatermanagement #resiliency #resilience #nola #neworleans #eskewdumezripple

On augmenting design with technology - Technology has given architects endless tools to make opportunistic design decisions, be more visible to the communities we serve, and expand the services we can offer. With our grant project, we’re trying to explore the intersection of technology, sustainability, and craft. Modern day construction in hot humid climates lends itself to compressed exterior wall assemblies that leave no room for air to cool down before it contributes to the heating load on a building. Using geometric studies and 3-d printed mockups, we've challenged ourselves to create a unitized, cast block, through which we’ll run melted ice, that can cool air before it hits a building's exterior assembly, reducing overall energy use, while simultaneously creating a tactile experience. - Max Katz, Designer [Max is one of several designers taking part in our studio sponsored Design Grant program, which provides teams with funding to explore design ideas outside of a traditional project structure.] . . . #designersattheirdesk #workplacewednesdays #eskewdumezripple #architecture #design #designgrant #buildingcommunity #3dprint #sketch #edrsketch

Miller Park, a project in collaboration with @spackmanmossopmichaels, is celebrating its grand opening on September 14! By elevating the entire park to street level and applying a “shared street approach” between Miller Park and the adjacent Miller Plaza, the team strived to create a unified civic space that would encourage pedestrian traffic throughout. There is an enduring, even eternal, dimension to urban waterfronts. They witness the ebbs and flows of the cities they serve. So often we tend to think of the land-water relationships in terms of opposites—an edge between two zones. But a city’s riverfront should seldom be thought of as a thin line. On the contrary, the broader the zone of overlap between land and river’s edge, the more successfully a city captures the benefits of its water assets. Our work in Vicksburg will seek to develop a future urban riverfront that reconnects its citizens to its river's edge, in essence, "de-privatizing" what should always be a major public commodity. On reconnecting with nature - My interest in biophilic design first developed in my undergraduate education in Environmental Design. In my research in the permaculture design process, I became especially interested in the relationship between health and design. So often we’ve designed our cities in a way that alienates us from nature. Biophilic design seeks to restore that experience of nature in the built environment and focus on how architects and designers can positively contribute to human health. Our work at the New Orleans Bioinnovation Center is a great example. In both the landscaped courtyard and water feature, the design draws from vernacular climate-responsive design strategies to provide a connection to nature. As designers, we have an opportunity to enhance and enliven that connection through our work. - Cassidy Rosen, Designer [Cassidy, as one of our designers interested in biophilic design, attended the Living Future Conference in Portland, Oregon this year. The conference, a cross-industry collaborative focused on authenticity and action through biophilic design, strived to connect individuals who share a similar passion for sustainability, health and equity within the built environment. Her watercolor skills aren’t too shabby either, as evidenced by her sketch of the BioInnovation Center!] . . . #designersattheirdesk #workplacewednesdays #biophilicdesign #eskewdumezripple #buildingcommunity #design #architecture #gogreen #ecofriendly #healthandwellness #biophilic #biophilia #edrsketch #sketch #watercolor #drawing #sketchbook

On mitigating climate change - We often think of buildings in terms of the energy they consume during operation. but there’s an initial spike in CO2 emissions—among other pollutants—just to build it. More and more we’re looking beyond just the monetary cost of building inputs to the global warming potential from their production and demolition—both the cost and environmental lifecycles. There’s a good deal of energy needed to produce cement, steel, glass and other common building elements. As we increase energy efficiency and renewable energy production, that embodied energy used to create the building becomes more and more important. If we can start to analyze our designs and bring that initial global warming potential down, we can push ourselves to create more carbon sensitive designs. Once our efficient buildings are capturing onsite energy and returning some to the cleaner-grid, we’ll be in a position to overcome our initial carbon debt from production and construction. We could truly go energy positive over time. - Tom Gibbons, Project Architect [Tom was one of the architects essential to running a carbon analysis for our project at @georgiatech, the Dalney Building. Say hello to our 2018 Fellows, Sam Gochman and Hannah Berryhill! Sam and Hannah join us this year exploring the architecture of hearing and sight, how our world inside is shaped by choices made by designers in materials that reflect, absorb, shape, and color waves of sound and light. As part of their time at EDR, they'll be publishing a regular podcast, "Fellows in the Field," exploring how connections between visual, acoustic, and neurobiological sciences are transforming architectural practice.
