My dinner last night - wholewheat gnoochi with salmon and spinach. Yes there's a lot of cheese on it and it was lovely!  I love cheese and I'm not prepared to give it up and that's fine because following a healthy diet does not mean you have to give up things you love that happen to be a bit "naughty". When you establish healthy habits and follow a healthy diet you naturally choose healthy, nutritious food most of the time because your body craves it and that means you can have those other foods you love without the guilt. Special events come up from time to time in everyone's life.  Case in point: Tonight my husband and I celebrated 15 years of marriage with a home cooked meal (last picture taken from 10 year anniversary). Before you get up in arms, this meal is was exactly what I wanted.  Meals prepared by chefs in restaurants are amazing because... 1.  You don't have to cook yourself  2. They soak everything in butter or oil.  While amazing in taste this style of eating is hard on the waistline and leaves you often with a sodium 'hangover'  Eating at home allows you the ability to: 1. Exercise your creativity in the kitchen (use spices, sauces, marinades) 2. Measure out your portions to align with you goals 3. I love F O O Dโ € โ € I love to enjoy it, I love the way it makes me feel, I love the energy it gives me, the way it lifts my mood, how strong I feel, how much better my Brain works after I fuel it.โ € โ € I love everything that it does for me.โ € But that wasn’t always the case. โ € โ € There was a time when I ate all the fast food for convenience. I ate boxes and bagged foods because they were easy. I didn’t have to think about what I was going to make, I would just pop it in the microwave, or mix all the pre made stuff together or I would stop by McDonald’s or BK on my way home or when we were out and about too busy with life without thinking about what I was putting into my body.โ € โ € Guess what else: I felt groggy, tired, exhausted, my brain was slow, my body felt weak, I felt down and unhappy, bloated, belly aches, face breakouts, I hated myself and my body, I felt gross.โ € โ € Each food item was meant to fuel you in a different way and when you learn what it can do for you, it can change your life. โ € โ € Did you know that what you eat also directly impacts your mental health as well?! When you’re eating better, your mind is more clear and less foggy meaning you can think better and faster. Your mood is going to be improved and you’ll be able to be more positive without having to work so hard at it.  Don’t get me wrong, I still have fast food, junk food, ice cream, cookies, chips, “bad foods” on occasion. And still even more often than I’d like too sometimes because I’m not perfect and I also enjoy those things.โ € Finding a balance is what keeps me going. I live by the 80-20 rule. Eating healthy and clean comes 80% of the time and enjoying brownies ice cream and pizza comes 20% of the time. It keeps me from falling off my healthy lifestyle, it helps me feel better inside and out, it helps me to focus at work, it helps me to love myself more on the days that I do enjoy the “bad” stuff, because I know I’m still living a healthy

Do you require your food to look pretty?  When I was eating bran muffins with lite peanut butter for breakfast, I never really cared what my food looked like (well, except for the elaborately decorated birthday cakes I made for clients, lol!). All I really cared about was getting the food in my belly so I could feel good for a few seconds, savoring the sweetness of the peanut butter and the crumb of the muffin.  The thought of taking a couple extra seconds to layer a chia parfait like this one with homemade compote (and then top it off with a homemade gingersnap snack ball) would have seemed eccentric at best--and a waste of time, at worst. (Come to think of it, I guess I am a bit eccentric!). When I started my #candidadiet, I really didn't care about what the food looked like. I just wanted to find a way to fill myself up so I wouldn't have to think about everything I was giving up. I wanted to somehow replace that feeling of satisfaction that the food gave me.  The funny thing is, once I shifted the way I thought about food and didn't expect my food to change my feelings about myself or my life, I was able to really focus on what it was: a way to support my health, nourish me, and ALSO delight my taste buds.  These days, I can take time to appreciate what the food is doing for my body, so also making it pleasing to look at (at least most of the time!) is more of a priority.  I do love chia pudding (who's with me on that?), but it's not the prettiest. So when I eat it, I want to pretty it up so that the entire experience is really pleasing and lovely.  And it makes me feel really good, for the long term, not just the few seconds it's in my mouth.  Do you take time to present your food in a way that's appealing? Banoffee smoothie. Enough said!  Recipe  2 frozen bananas 1 cup coconut milk 3 pitted dates 1tbsp cashew butter (or your preferred one) 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 tsp maca powder (I used Navitas) Pinch of salt (I used Himalayan pink salt)  Blend together and enjoy!
