Alex Dimitriu, MD's salon video: Mind Optimization is available to view on our Youtube channel (@soulfoodsalon). Dr. Dimitriu's talk was engaging, thought provoking, witty and fun. He delved into many concepts concerning the human mind and its complexity. A few take homes were: To make changes in your life: 1. understand that there is a problem, 2. decide to do something about it, and 3. execute your plan. He talked about emotional anchors- when things in your life are going well, write about it, live it, share it- use those anchors to set in that mood state. This exercise helps lend vision to what worked in the past and what did not. I loved his explanation of Darwin and Buddha. Darwin is egocentric, us vs. them, it is planning for the future. Buddha is ego dissolution, we are all one. You need Dawinism to get you where you are but you need a Buddhist mindset to enjoy it and to be present. There is a balance between the two. Let's say you have a new habit and you want to cultivate: review your progress each week. You could randomly choose a time or place to do it, but the best way to make sure it happens is to ritualize it based on... The day of the week- for example, weight yourself every day. The time of day- for example, having a morning ritual where you can get clear on what you're doing today to take one step forward. Or during your lunch break, taking the first 10 minutes to go for a quick walk. Location-for example, keep the water cooler on your actual desk at work, and end up drinking more water. Emotional anchors-for example, hanging your old pair of jeans (or a picture) in a prominent location in your bedroom or office.
