Early this year we did what we love doing most ✈️ ... set out on a two-week adventure to explore a couple of quaint hill stations in North India. Visiting #dharamshala as a child and now again as an adult was an amazing experience. Right from the chilly 4-degree evenings at #mcleodganj to the serene #zen gardens of #norbhulingka this is a truly magical place. #travel #traveldiaries #traveljunkies ❤️❤️ #tworovinghearts

Ektara Collective is an independent, autonomous, non-funded group of people – their debut feature ‘Turup’ is set against the backdrop Bhopal’s Chakki Chouraha’s favourite pastime chess being played throughout the day. Their pawns include morality and religion, causing social and political tensions to erupt whenever a tournament gets underway. Against this simmering backdrop, a domestic worker with a secret hobby, a young woman in love and a former journalist struggling with married life must make their moves with care. When caste, class, religion and gender come into play, there are boundaries to be negotiated, and the very rules of the game stand challenged. • • #diff2017 #dharamshalaiff #indie #films #movies #cinema #feature
Zurich born Alain Gsponer’s ‘Heidi’ is a film adaptation of perhaps the most recognizable Swiss bestseller of all time – Johanna Spyri’s ‘Heidi’. Gsponer’s incarnation follows 5-year-old orphan Heidi, who is shipped off by her stern aunt to live with her rather grumpy grandfather, in his small cabin high up in the Swiss Alps. What entails is a beautifully spun story of contrast – Heidi is very a much a fish-out-of-water in the secluded cabin. • • #diff2017 #dharamshalaiff #heidi #indie #films #movies #cinema #feature
Bornila Chatterjee’s masterful ‘The Hungry’ follows Tulsi Joshi, a widow and bride to be who comes to her own wedding seeking revenge for the brutal murder of her first born son. Based on Shakespeare’s brutal Titus Andronicus – Chatterjee’s characters tangle in an enthralling display of wit and cunning. The Hungry, at it’s core, is about the violence that exists between power and love – a macabre fairy tale set in the elite circles of North India. • • #diff2017 #dharamshalaiff #indie #films #movies #cinema #thehungry #feature
Rima Das’ film ‘Village Rockstars’ is an incredible feat to say the least – she shot the film almost single handedly on a miniscule budget. Ten-year-old Dhunu dreams of having her very own rock band. Her vibrant spirit, imagination and self-assurance stand out in a world where girls are expected to be timid and submissive. Her goal of becoming a guitarist is motivated by issues like rebellion and empowerment – and every day she hopes for the moment she can finally play on a real guitar. • • #diff2017 #dharamshalaiff #indie #films #movies #cinema #feature
Nicole van Kilsdonk’s ‘The Day my Father Became a Bush’ beautifully narrates the story of Toda, a ten-year-old girl who lives in a bakery with her father – the best pastry chef in the village. When her father is suddenly called away to defend his country, Toda must undertake a challenging journey to the unknown neighbouring country where her mother lives. Filled with absurd twists and bizarre humour, the film tells a tale you may not have experienced: the fleeing of a war from a child’s perspective. • • #diff2017 #dharamshalaiff #indie #films #movies #cinema
Jakob Schuh and Jan Lachauer bring something utterly new to the world of fable with their two-part animated film ‘Revolting Rhymes’. Based on the book written by Roald Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake, ‘Revolting Rhymes’ are two half-hour films which ingeniously interweave five of Dahl’s retellings of classic fairy tales with playful twists and surprising endings: Little Red Riding Hood, Snow-White, Three Little Pigs, Jack & the Beanstalk and Cinderella. • • #diff2017 #dharamshalaiff #movies #cinema #films #roalddahl #animated
Swiss director Claude Barras’ Oscar nominated film ‘My Life as a Zucchini’ recounts the tale of a troubled 9-year-old boy’s time in a group home following the death of his alcoholic mother. Presented as a stop-motion animated feature, the film is based on Gilles Paris’ book ‘Autobiographie d’une courgette’. On the surface, it is a story of children surviving abuse and abandonment, yet despite the spectre of parental alcoholism, drug addiction and worse, this beautifully tender and empathetic film addresses children and adults alike in clear and compassionate tones that span generations. • • #diff2017 #dharamshalaiff #animated #film #stopmotion #movies #cinema
Newton, India’s official entry for the Oscars, tells the story of a rookie clerk on election duty in the conflict ridden jungle of Chhattisgarh, trying his best to conduct free and fair voting despite the apathy of security forces and the looming fear of an attack by Maoist rebels. Director Amit Masurkar’s darkly comic exploration stresses the fragility of the democratic process in India. • • #diff2017 #dharamshalaiff #newton #cinema #movies #film
Mukti Bhawan, a fiction feature directed by Shubhashish Bhutiani, is a heightened culmination of Varanasi, a last leap of faith for the unquestioning believer. Daya goes to Varanasi to attain salvation, taking his son Rajiv along with him. As days pass, Daya finds a company in a widow while Rajiv is left torn between tradition and modernity; between a boss on an incessantly vibrating phone and the sense of duty of a good son. • • #diff2017 #dharamshalaiff #fiction #feature #muktibhawan #indie #films #movies #cinema
Communion is the compelling Polish feature documentary debut of director Anna Zamecka that tells the story of Ola, a 12-year-old living with an alcoholic father and an autistic brother, in a cramped and crumbling-down apartment in a town an hour’s drive from Warsaw. For better or worse, Ola is the head of the household, and while not always graceful under pressure, she delivers an exquisite and highly nuanced performance. • • #diff2017 #dharamshalaiff #indie #film #documentary #cinema #movies #communion
Directed by Pushpendra Singh, Ashwatthama is a touching fiction feature that weaves together contemporary rural issues and ancient Indian myth. When his mother is killed in a bandit raid, Ishvaku tries to cope by entering the imaginary realm of the story she had narrated to him: That of Ashwatthama, whose blind vengeance provoked a curse that forced him to wander the earth in eternal suffering. • • #diff2017 #dharamshalaiff #indie #films #cinema #movies #fiction #feature #ashwatthama

Devashish Makhija’s fiction feature Ajji, which premiered earlier this year at the Busan International Film Festival, is a dark tale of revenge. When a society’s judicial system fails to function due to an imbalance of wealth and power, punishment for a crime becomes a matter of personal vengeance. With the help of a woman in a brothel and techniques she learned from a butcher, a grandmother avenges the rape of her granddaughter. • • #diff2017 #dharamshalaiff #fiction #feature #ajji #indie #film #cinema #movies

The recently deceased and much revered director Kundan Shah’s satire-cum-farce Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983) elicited laughter and contemplation when it was screened at Dharamshala Open Air Prison and District Jail on Sunday, October 15th. Around 60 inmates—male and female—enjoyed the film, which led to a lively discussion on power, truth and corruption. Several audience members commented on how the film’s broad comedy was pierced by biting reality, with one reflecting on how cinema can act as an important mirror to both society and oneself. • • #diff2017 #dharamshalaiff #community #communityscreening #cinema #movies
