After 10 years in the works, Critical Imageability is finally out—on @e_flux architecture. If the increasing imageable condition of buildings is leading to a gradual stultification of architectural thinking, here is a proposal to change that dynamic by turning imageability into the seed of a certain design depth. In chronological order, special thanks to Ayala Levin, Felicity Scott, #bernardtschumi, @riqueramirez, and Tom Weaver for their thoughtful comments on earlier versions of the piece. Very grateful also to @alucidwake for the invitation to contribute and the superb editing: https://www.e-flux.com/architecture/positions/222387/critical-imageability/ . . . #architecture #essay #theory #architecturetheory #criticality #architecturediscourse #architecturaltheory #architecturalthinking #critique #criticalarchitecture #imageability #design #architecturedesign #meaning #ornament #buildings

Of the being in itself, this architectural illustration focuses on the everydayness of being for itself which references from jean paul sartre's being and nothingness. Istanbul life throws one being into its spatiality for converting oneself to his/her consciousness of awareness. This city is always awake to notify the importance of its chaos for coping with the lived area. #postmodernism #watercolor #architecturedrawing #architecture #freehanddrawing #criticalarchitecture #architecturalrepresentation #architecturaltheory #sketch #inkpen #city #mapping #phenomenology #abstract #axonometric #isometric #planoblique #publicspace #irregularity #chaos #life #relation #urban #experiential #spatiotemporal #imaginative #dasein

This mapping tries to focus on the urban soundscapes of Karakoy, Istanbul. The post-critical terrain and transcultural architecture of this zone produce and design the superposed sound levels at different dimensions of this perceived area. #mapping #soundmapping #architecture #architecturedrawing #architecturaltheory #criticalarchitecture #narrativearchitecture #architecturalrepresentation #phenomenology #watercolor #inkpen #abstract

After 7 years in the works, I am thrilled that “On Architecture’s Metacriticality” has finally being published in “The Routledge Companion to Criticality in Art, Architecture, and Design,” a 464-pp momentous volume that has just come out. Through a larger set of questions within the domain of critique in socio-cultural theory, the essay launches a revised version of architectural criticality where the critical condition becomes a catalyst for the rearticulation of external spheres of perception and signification—in contrast to, on the one hand, the mere accommodation of those into architectural codes, and the fundamentally oppositional valance of traditional critical stances, on the other. Special thanks to Eduardo Cadava from @pu_english, the folks at Critical Inquiry, and @bryannorwood for their invaluable remarks on earlier iterations of the essay. . . . @routledgeart #architecture #books #essay #architecturebooks #theory #architecturetheory #criticality #architecturediscourse #architecturaltheory #architecturalthinking #critique #sociocultural #socioculturaltheory #philosophy #criticalarchitecture

This mood-mapping narrates the gathering of one social group. The architectural representation of this illustration tries to depict the people's actions and moods who attend to this meeting. The mapping aims to indicate the formative reflections of the attendants' body languages, according to their temporality. Each colour represents an individual and so his/her spatial replacement during the meeting. #criticalarchitecture #architecturalrepresentation #architecturaltheory #architecturedrawing #isometric #freehand #mixedmedia #watercolor #mapping #moodmapping

. CV . EVA MARIA FROSCHAUER vertritt derzeit die Professur für Kunstgeschichte an der Brandenburgischen Technischen Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg. Promotion an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (2008) und Habilitation in Cottbus (2017). Von 2010 bis 2017 Vorstand des Netzwerk Architekturwissenschaft e.V. Arbeitsschwerpunkte: mediale Repräsentationen von Architektur, reflexive Entwurfsforschung, Sammlungsgeschichte. Wichtigste Veröffentlichungen: „An die Leser“. Baukunst darstellen und vermitteln – Berliner Architekturzeitschriften um 1900, Tübingen 2010; Wissenschaft Entwerfen. My research today took me to the Heathrow Community Noise Forum, hosted at Heathrow Academy, and chaired by Matt Gorman, Director of Sustainability at Heathrow. One notable debate centred on the monetisation of the health impact of noise and we heard a presentation from the DfT on Webtag, a mechanism for modelling the impact of transport infrastructures. We are told that the financial dis-benefit of the airport is between 350 and 400 million pounds per year and that Heathrow is prepared to contribute 2 billion in compensation for the negative impact of the third runway. A forum member asks why the airport is not paying any costs for impact now. Another questions the possibility of monetising impact. Another questions the possibility of putting a monetary value on human life. This is how the world works we are told. Another observes that the airport is being measured only in terms of its benefit to foreign airlines and foreign owners, and not in terms of its dis-benefit to people who live locally. There are also concerns about how measurement is conducted. Who gets to select the advisor? Should impact be measured at 57db or 54db? Which of the people who sign off the document live under the flight path? And in any case, what counts as being ‘affected’ by noise? Woodcut outlining the abbey memory system of the Dominican Johann von Romberch in hisCongestorium artificiose memorie from 1533.Displayed as part of an information panel at the exhibition ‘Counter Investigations. Forensic Architecture’ at ICA. The image displays objects to be remembered in the courtyard, chapel and library of the abbey, and belongs to a tradition, developed and practised from antiquity, known as the art of memory. The tradition upholds that built spaces can function as repositories for memories, and that recalling or returning to a space can trigger the memories held within it. For Forensic Architecture, in the absence of physical trace of an event, human memory is used as a resource the purposes of investigation into truth about state violence. To this end, and drawing on the logic of the memory theatre, destroyed or inaccessible spaces are reconstructed and victims of violence are positioned within them to help elicit memories of traumatic events. #forensicarchitecture #contemporaryart #spatialpolitics #ica #criticalarchitecture #memorytheatre

Maja Zeco. Silencer. City Sonic Places: Experiencing the Urban Soundscape at London College of Communication. For this work Maja Zeco shuts out the soundscape. Or is it the noisescape? She strolls the Elephant and Castle neighbourhood wearing noise-cancelling headphones and a suit made from soundproofing panels. Or is this a piece of environmental art, so that the outside is protected from noise pollution from her body? Perhap this is a new arena to which the logic of austerity (including its marketisation) has yet to be applied.  @maja_zeco #performanceart #contemporaryart #soundscape #elephantandcastle #criticalarchitecture
DO 30.01.2018 19:00 „Architecture in Visual Culture, A Porous System, and Some Attempted Order: Beginnings of the M+ Architecture Collection“ . SHIRLEY SURYA - M+, the new museum in Hongkong designed by Herzog & de Meuron is scheduled to open in 2019 . This talk is titled in response to the title of the lecture series as a way of expressing an embrace of this tripartite framework, but also a realisation of its limits in the building of M+’s architecture collection. Collection-building necessitates a disciplinary focus, a principled identification of subjects for acquisition, and a methodological order informed by the museum’s remit. Yet, under the conditions of a lack in historical research on regional architectural developments, the existence of fragments rather than complete archives, the vying for materials by nationalistically-driven collecting institutions, and the reality of an increasingly cross-mediated world, this talk aims to bring out the inevitable “gaps” in subscribing to the more ‘classical’ framework in how M+ builds its architecture collection. Atop shifting grounds, it takes on a more porous system of navigating between collecting for historical research and interpretive display, between the local and transnational, between the canonical and non-canonical, and between architecture and other disciplines. . Shirley Surya is Associate Curator, Design and Architecture, at M+, Hong Kong’s new museum for visual culture. As part of building M+’s permanent collection, Surya has researched and acquired works representing post-war design and architectural developments in greater China and Southeast Asia. She co-curated ‘Building M+: The Museum & Architecture Collection‘ (2014) and ‚Mobile M+: NEONSIGNS.HK‘ (2014), and contributed to ‚Incomplete Urbanism: Attempts of Critical Spatial Practice‘ (2016) and ‚Yung Ho Chang & FCJZ: Material-ism‘ (2012). OLGA TOULOUMI speaks about the „Landscapes of Justice: World Order and Media in the Nuremberg Trials, c. 1945“ . Photo credit: Moritz Röger
DO 16.01.2017 19:00 „Landscapes of Justice: World Order and Media in the Nuremberg Trials, c. 1945“ OLGA TOULOUMI During four short months in the summer of 1945, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the US Signal Corps, IBM, and landscape architect Dan Kiley established themselves in Nuremberg to prepare for the International Military Tribunals. In Courtroom 600 Kiley fused modern landscape design and juridical architecture, reifying functionalist principles against historicist forms and symbolic visual languages. The objective was the production of international criminal law as a transparent rational system that made possible the translation of evidentiary input into adjudicative output. This lecture will examine the role of architecture and space in the double articulation of international law: both as a system that aims to deliver justice and as a just and international order in and of itself. CV Olga Touloumi is Assistant Professor of Art History at Bard College. Her work focuses on the history of modern architecture and addresses questions of governmentality, internationalism, and media theory. Her book-in-progress examines spaces of global governance since the outbreak of World War II and the new ideas about publics, citizenship, and communication that they articulated. Her research has received support from Harvard University, the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, the Canadian Center for Architecture, and the Alexander S. Onassis Foundation. Her writing has appeared in the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, Buildings & Landscapes, Thresholds, among others.

Last week, CCSA invited the Chief Curator of CCA - Giovanna Borasi to talk about the topic „Attention Spans, Multiple Takes, and Possibilities that Seem Distant at First“ at the German Architecture Museum in Frankfurt. @canadiancentreforarchitecture Photo credit: Moritz Röger
DO 14.12.2017 19:00 „Attention Spans, Multiple Takes, and Possibilities that Seem Distant at First“ GIOVANNA BORASI The CCA is an institution that attempts to transform the thinking, studying, and producing architecture through exposing the field to curatorial approaches, processes of interrogation, and the rearranging of ideas in ways that respond to contemporary cultural contexts. The CCA Collection, international in scope, is held with the conviction that works and archives can contribute to contemporary debate in architecture, through new, flexible, and responsive systems (or ways of working) that re-think and re-order archival material inside different frames of reference. CV Giovanna Borasi joined the Canadian Center for Architecture (CCA) as Curator for Contemporary Architecture in 2005 and became Chief Curator in 2014. With a background in architecture, she initiated her career as an editor and writer, recently as Deputy Editor in Chief for Abitare (2011 – 2013) and for Lotus International (1998 – 2005) and Lotus Navigator (2000 – 2004). Her exhibitions and related books shape contemporary discussion in architecture with a particular attention to alternative ways of practicing and evaluating architecture, and how environmental, political and social issues are influencing today’s urbanism and built environment.

DO 16.11.2017 19:00 Architektur – Bild – Körper. Visionäre Kraft der Ordnung und (Zer)störung BRIGITTE SÖLCH „Give me a gun and I will Make all Buildings move“, schreibt Bruno Latour mit Blick auf die scheinbare Statik der Architektur.
FR 10.11.2017 19:00 „The Order of Libraries: Universities and Truth.“ REINHOLD MARTIN At a moment when truth is a controversial topic, this lecture looks at its technical infrastructure. Beginning with OMA’s new Qatar National Library at Education City in Doha and rewinding history from there, the lecture will explore the architecture of libraries, and in particular of university libraries, as media systems. From the European and North American nineteenth century to the present, we will ask: What forms of order do libraries construct? And, what is the relationship between that order and the difficult but quite real production, maintenance, and distribution of truth?
