Today, at 1 in the afternoon, we hosted a Group Discussion on "Coping with Expectations". Some very good points were discussed.  Here's a summary if you missed it:  The group identified 2 main categories of expectations: 1. External 2. Internal  External expectations are from parents and society while internal expectations are expectations we have from ourselves. Internal expectations are more important than external, for we know what we are capable of and the expectations we have set for our ownselves should be met.  The group also deliberated on, "If expectations are good or bad?", a part of the group believed they are bad, as it only leads to disappointment if expectations are not met but after much discussion, the group concluded, expectations are actually necessary in a person's growth. If there were no expectations then there would be no motivation to push ourselves to reach our goals.  Another point that the group agreed on is that unrealistic high expectations from parents and society can affect us emotionally. Hence, we should ensure that all expectations are channelized to better results and not let them weigh heavy on us. It is fine even to ask your parents to have lower expectations from you, if you feel their high expectations are affecting your mental health. // // // This was about this week's Group Discussion. #rollercon2019 day four... skated with @teamcanadarollerderby against @teamindigenousrollerderby today in the #championship game. It was an hour of #hardhits and gruelling jams. #teamcanada took the #win but it’s safe to say #teamindigenous won a lot of hearts today and was 💯% the #crowdfavourite 🙌🏻 I got to #block and #jam equally today which was a great #experience for me. Super #thankful for the #opportunity to share the track with so many #talented skaters from @montrealrollerderby @calgaryrollerderby and @terminalcityrollerderby 🇨🇦 Opted for #naps and #skatepark in lieu of the #blackandblueball this evening. Empowered by having this moment! It all hit me in a gentle yoga class. I think it’s been coming for awhile and it was like I finally unlocked that last level. Felt these tears rolling down my face without even realizing I was crying. But they were tears of true understanding and release. As I’ve been processing my trauma this past year, I have always had many well meaning, well educated people inquire where I feel my trauma and anxiety in my body. And I’ve always looked back at them annoyed because that question literally made no sense to me.... “What do you mean? Where do I feel it? Ugh. Everywhere. That question doesn’t even make sense. This is too hard. I’m never going to get better...:” But it has finally clicked for me! I had the opportunity to go to the Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma workshop/seminar this past week @kripalucenter led by Bessel van der Kolk and Licia Sky.  Between the gentle yoga classes, educational empowerment, and Licia Sky’s brilliant, introspective body and movement exercises I think I finally was able to dig deep enough and be mindful enough at the same time to understand and notice how and when my body started reacting to not only my own thoughts but the environment around me.  Super intense and still making sense of it all but wanted to get it down to help continue to process and retain this enlightenment. for the lack of a better metaphor: tonight’s sunset was like a glimpse into my current heart “situation”... it’s bright and dark.  it’s light and heavy.  it’s cheery and pained. it’s expanding and contracting. the waves of emotions roll around the rocks that are hope and grief. but we are here for another day... and i’m grateful for that 🙌🏻
