The Guildford office has been busy raising money for @challengers1979. In an enterprise challenge the team was given £50 and tasked with getting the biggest return possible. Their idea for an office Tuckshop was a great success, raising over £175. ⠀ #ashcontracting#construction#southeast#charity

Slipstraw Materials: Straw/Clay Long straw is mixed with a small amount of liquid clay and stuffed between panels, then compressed and left to dry. For the same thickness, slipstraw is nearly as insulative as straw bales and can be used to fill thinner interior walls too. Yet, compared to straw bale building, slipstraw is time consuming (construction and drying time) and isn’t load-bearing (has to be used inside a wood frame). #kolûba#slipstraw#ecology#naturalbuilders#construction#ecological#doğalyapı#dogalyapi#architecture#straw#clay#earthenbuilding#natural
Nominated in the commercial category of the 2018 Brick Awards - Hammersley House Architects - @squirepartners Brick - @ibstockbrick Stunning facades that fuse a rational brick frame with stone spandrels and green tiles are among the distinguishing characteristics of a new mixed-use redevelopment project in Soho, London. The redeveloped Hammersley House on Warwick Street continues the long-standing dual-purpose remit of the site with extensive space for offices and retail, but with a more meaningful connection to the surrounding Soho Conservation Area due to the utilisation of a more contemporary crafted design. The choice of materials was determined by architect Squire & Partners having given careful thought to the site’s previous history and present-day requirements – in keeping with a number of its recent schemes in which the aim has been to review a site’s historic development with a view to remodelling it, as opposed to straightforward demolition and replacement. In the case of Hammersley House, the project team had plenty of influences to draw on, including the memory of local resident and iconic figurative painter Francis Bacon. Architect and partner Tim Gledstone explains: “Warwick Street is the latest in a collection of Squire & Partners projects where the layers of history of a building are exploited in order to remodel and reimagine, rather than demolish and replace, offering more sustainable and time-saving possibilities that create more from less. In the case of Warwick Street the full site history was explored, starting with the origins of the site as home to master fabric weavers Holland and Sherry’s, through the abstract and rebellious spirit of local Soho resident Francis Bacon, to the post-modern 1980s façade subsequently applied to the 1950s shell. Traditional elements of the building, such as the façade, mansard roof and reception desk evolve through these layers and emerge surreally enhanced, capturing the playful and creative
This has easily been the most fulfilling project I've been a part of. This customer was taken advantage of, left with a terribly "repaired" home, and without a true contractor to fix it. Thanks to Healthy Homes from @nationwidekids we've got her home looking good, and most importantly safe for her and her children.
@willsmith said it best, "it's unrealistic to think you're going to bend a piece of metal and fly people over an ocean in that metal"-- but the fact is today we have airplanes because the right people believed it was possible and executed on that belief. ✈️ . That same fascination (for us at least) applies to skyscrapers every time we see a "super-tall". It's truly remarkable (aside from the obvious physics) how it's even possible that something so narrow and heavy is able to stand on this green Earth. 🌆 . Huge shoutout to @corescaffold for making it look easy, and for everyone that's pushing the boundaries of the development process to reach new heights! 🏗
