Slide 2: #cartwheels omg. My weak side is HILARIOUS. You’ll see it. And I did a couple cartwheel to handstand holds. Slide 3: I only ever exit my handstands to the left. Never any other way. 🌖Strength and courage comes from a deep understand of awareness into ones mind, body and spirit. 🌔 Last week was tough for me as I have been dealing with knee pain. My spirit was not as positive as I had hoped. I kept having to remind myself that my body is in a phase at the moment, just as the moon has phases and the year has seasons. There is time for growth, learning and coming back stronger than before. Breathing is my current mood booster and strength holder. Knowing that I can breathe and move my body with control and purpose is so refreshing and uplifting. I feel strong mentally and physically and I feel grateful for my body and it’s current phase of life. ✨Breathing with intention brings me mindfulness and awareness and a time for space to just be with myself in deep communication of unspoken words! ✨
This was me last night, winding down, doing some flow and getting ready for bed while my husband was in the shower. I don't think I ever went into any form of #vasisthasana outside of a class until last year. I keep surprising myself when I just follow through with what it is I'm trying to do. I am stronger than I think I am, and I am more agile than I think I am, but it takes me getting out of my own way to realize it. First day of #handsdownforbalance and we’re dropping it low with chaturanga! But not too low, we don’t want to compromise our shoulder stability 😁. Aim to lower about half way finding that 90 degree angle in your arms. Elbows pull into your sides, knit your ribs in and pull your belly button up! Hips stay in line with torso. This is such an amazing strength builder for arm balances and inversions. When we pull our elbows in tight we build more of that tricep strength we need to balance on our hands. Try lowering half way then using your core to lift back up to high plank. That motion of pressing away from the ground to lift up will make you feel lighter in balances. . . One of my Beijing trainees got creative with our chaturanga-on-a-belt lesson. I often teach lowering onto a belt as a way to encourage students to shift forward as they descend. And then the belt provides support, so students can hold the pose and refine alignment. Here, Zoe demonstrates a full surya namaskar A avec belt. She also demonstrates video editing skills. From my latest blog post “Chaturanga Dandasana (Four-Limbed Staff Pose) builds strength throughout the body. But if done incorrectly or for the wrong reasons (your ego) there can be injury, primarily in the shoulder joint. If you have shoulder or wrist injuries or if you are pregnant then this may not be the best option for your practice. I tell my students all the time they can have a wonderful yoga practice without this pose but if they’re going to do it then let’s do it safely and use it as it was meant to be. I’ve been breaking it down bit by bit each week so you can start to string things together, or work on individual parts yourself. Though transitions can be tough — be it poses, seasons, or chapters of life — we approach it in pieces so that the larger transitions become more digestible. Come play for my final 3 weeks at CPY. Had such a fab afternoon today teaching a Core Strength Vinyasa Anatomy workshop. This is when I'm at my absolute happiest, love sharing cutting edge anatomy and biomechanics information with yogis and then watching them transform their practice, lighting themselves up from the inside out and most importantly keeping themselves safe. One of the things we looked at today was how to avoid shoulder injuries in #chaturanga - swipe to see pictures of using blocks to make sure that the shoulder never goes below the elbow - not only is this destabilising for the shoulder to repeatedly bring shoulder below elbows but can lead to shoulder impingement and rotator cuff injuries which i see in my clients and students over and over again. This is why I never teach or practice knees, chin, chest as this transition is a shit show for your shoulders, cervical spine and lower back and doesn't actually help you develop any authentic core strength. . . Push up is a basic compound exercise/movement to build foundation for arms strength, shoulder strength and core as well. A beautiful basic exercise it is. If you're beginner and you're struggling to build arms strength, this one is for you. If you're beginner and you're struggling with things like #crowpose#chaturanga#handstand#armbalance and some other things connected to arms strength, you must build the foundation first, do the basics first. While performing push ups, protract the shoulders and engage them, push them, maintain posterior pelvic tilt, engage core, at all times. Keep head, shoulders, hips, knees, and feet in one line, maintaining a straight body through out, and neck neutral. On the top of the movement lock your elbows and keep the arms straight and maintain your posture. Do some #pushups everyday and do it right. Do not skip the basics. . . . .
