I’ve been neglecting to really share much of Butcher’s obedience mainly because I’m doing a lot of new things with him and working out the kinks. Today was the first real session with using a toy reward. (Yesterday I had introduced it but only a few reps.) One big trainer tip: When you are working in a new environment, go back a few steps at the beginning to help you and your dog get into a work flow. I see so many people bring their dog to a new place or a seminar and ask way too much right from the start when the dog is a little uneasy or even more importantly.. YOU are uneasy. Remember you and your dog can have a little stage fright. Also if you’re a bit nervous your dog will sense it and be unsure of exactly what your asking. Come in and ask for a static position or add one step and reward your dog. This is going to break the ice and your dog is going to gain confidence right away which can help the whole flow of the rest of the session. Most people don’t believe our emotions can effect our dogs.. I’m here to tell you that they 💯 do. We don’t train very often at this park. So I’m helping butcher out in this session by giving him a hand lure to really keep him on the right path.. very quickly I can go to the step we are on at home and move my hand to the side of his head.
