The history walk through Brugges town. Lessons learnt, when towns flourish, other regions want to conquer them or extract high taxes. If you lose your shit & react stupidly, you can be severely punished through neglect and isolation, leading to poverty which can result in forced, unintentional preservation of your culture because you have no funds to evolve through any kind of industrial revolution and all trading gas been cut off. The result, a town trapped in time, that is today a UNESCO heritage protected site where the world flocks to see this 'straight out of a movie set' and tourism flourishes. Voila... The magic of no time. #bruges Apr 2019 #wondersofbelgium

📍Brugge, Belgium 🇧🇪 ———————————————————————- Visiting this historical city is like stepping back in time! The city centre is a UNESCO world heritage site, with many medieval buildings in tact, walking through the streets leaves you feeling in awe. It is home to many famous buildings including the world’s second tallest brick building, a 13th century belfry holding 47 bells which still employs a full-time carillonneur, and the Basilica of the Holy Blood which houses many religious artifacts including the relic of the Holy Blood. It’s sometimes referred to as the Venice of the North due to its many canals. Taking a boat trip through them is a great way to see the beautiful city centre. Wander by them at night and you can see the stunning architecture reflected while seeing swans swim by. Belgium is known for some delicious staples like French fries served with mayo, Belgian chocolate, and my personal favourite the Belgian waffle. I loved the house of waffles!! Belgium is also known for its beer, there are many varieties and though I am not a regular beer drinker I did enjoy the “Kriek” variety which is flavoured with sweet cherry juice! One evening we sat by the canal drinking beer while listening to a passing opera singer, so amazing! There are many unique things in Brugge including a museum housing Salvador Dali original works of art, modern sculptures in the canals such as a whale made out of recycled plastic, many brewery museums, a French fry museum, and even a chocolate museum. I loved Bruges, it was a stunning city with great food, a great atmosphere and many exciting things to do. I would love to go back as well as explore more of Belgium!
The Belfry of Bruges is a medieval bell tower in the centre of the City. It has 47 bells that are played by means of a hand keyboard. Do spend an evening with your better half, listening to the various tunes 😊 It’s truly is a treat 🥂 #bruges#belfry#medieval#belgium🇧🇪
