Bowie Fridays: By the time Bowie recorded Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) he had already worked with Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew, pioneers of the synthesized guitar, and Fripp would handle the lead guitar on the majority of songs on that album. For a couple of the songs, however, DB recruited the ‘textural’ guitarist out of Lou Reed’s band who had come up with a technique of layering and artificial sustain that, when properly orchestrated, sounded like a string section from outer space. It was the perfect accompaniment for Bowie’s revisit of Major Tom. Chuck Hammer, whose work on “Ashes to Ashes” and “Teenage Wildlife” was cutting edge, called his electronic wall of guitars ‘Guitarchitecture’ and recorded this album of the same name, which showcases his skill in creating fleshed out sonic designs with tactile textures, in 1981. Though he thanks both Lou and David on the record, there are credible stories that Reed was supposed to produce this record but strongly disagreed with Hammer’s conceptual vision. And while the production by Charles Bugbee is a little dated, grounded by early ‘80s aesthetics and the limitations of the technology, Hammer’s feel and tone shine through. #djadjectivealbumoftheday #bowiefriday #bowiefridays #chuckhammer #guitarchitecture #vinyloftheday #guitarpioneer #sleepingwithantiques #guitargraphy
Bowie Fridays: Supposedly when David and Iggy ran into Eno in Berlin, they were able to impress him with their ability to whistle the two songs from this innovative experimental record from memory. The story may well be apocryphal, but there can be no doubt that many elements of this record informed and inspired the process used in creating Low and Heroes. Looped and treated guitars layered obliquely on top of each other create an Enossifed Frippertronic ambience. The front cover photo with its mirroring structure is the perfect image for this music that reflects upon itself. Some Friday mornings I just want to ease into the day, and the Heavenly Music Corporation has the meditative means to make that happen. You can disappear into the richly detailed background landscape painted by these master artists and let it set your mood. #djadjectivealbumoftheday #bowiefriday #bowiefridays #frippandeno #nopussyfooting #theheavenlymusiccorporation #swastikagirls #robertfripp #brianeno #vinylnowspinning
Bowie Fridays: Kurt Cobain announces before launching into a cover of “The Man Who Sold The World” that he’s probably going to screw up and then goes on to own the song with his passionate vocals, an earmark of the majority of songs on this record. Cobain famously argued with MTV executives regarding almost everything about this performance from set list to guest musicians. Opting to shy away from the hits and celebrate less known songs and bands, MTV Unplugged In New York is effective, highlighting The Vaselines, The Meat Puppets and obscure tracks by Bowie and Leadbelly. Cobain has a singular voice; it can be tenderly intimate, filled with unbridled rage and despairingly bleak all at the same time. On a stage made to look like a funeral, Nirvana blew the roof of the place playing a (mostly) acoustic set. The album probably debuted at #1 because it was released in the immediate wake of Cobain’s death when there was a high demand for Nirvana material, but 25 years after this live performance it still cuts deep. #djadjectivealbumoftheday ##bowiefriday #bowiefridays #nirvana #mtvunpluggedinnewyork #themanwhosoldtheworld #jesusdoesntwantmeforasunbeam #pennyroyaltea #allapologies #lakeoffire #wheredidyousleeplastnight

Bowie Fridays: This record was really the last straw for Bowie in regards to his relationship with RCA. They had already released a single of his xmas duet with Bing Crosby without consulting him and now they released this compilation of B-sides explicitly against his wishes. But to a young American Bowie fan in 1981, this was virtually the only way to get many of these tunes, and while some of the songs are not among the best in his catalogue (the ‘75 disco remix of “John, I’m Only Dancing” is not a favorite) others are jewels. “Round and Round” The Chuck Berry cover that got bumped from Ziggy Stardust for the last minute addition of the more conceptually relevant “Starman”, is a rocker, and “Holy, Holy” captures the heavy rock facet of what the Spiders from Mars were all about while “Velvet Goldmine” reveals their glammier side. You get great covers of Jacque Brel’s “Amsterdam” and Brecht/Weill’s “Moon of Alabama”, an Italian version of “Space Oddity” and a German version of “Heroes”. When Ryko curated the initial CD releases of his RCA records, they added all these songs as bonus tracks and now they’re much more accessible, but it’s still great to have them together in one place on vinyl. Bowie Fridays: Here are we, one magical movement from Kether to Malkuth, as the Thin White Duke steers the Isolar Tour train onto the stage at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale New York (March 23, 1976) with a super tight band delivering a burning set that made sure white stained. The crackling guitar interplay between the street smart funk of Carlos Alomar and the nimble fingering of savant Stacey Heydon is key to what makes this performance work so well. It seems that when Bowie was in sudden need of a lead guitarist, a roadie recommended a guy he knew from Windsor, Ontario. They flew this dude to Jamaica, where DB was staying at Keith Richards’ place and auditioned him in the living room. Perhaps the fact that Heydon didn’t know how to play any Bowie tunes on the guitar is what got him the job and accounts for the powerful appeal and freshness of these renditions. Tony Kaye is on the keys playing crafty arrangements of songs like “Life on Mars?” and “Changes” which were originally recorded by Rick Wakeman, the gent who replaced him in Yes. This is top notch stuff all around; DB is about to make the move to Berlin and you can feel the creative energy in the air increasing in intensity. Such a great Friday morning listen. #djadjectivealbumoftheday #bowiefriday #bowiefridays #livenassaucoliseum76 #stationtostation #stay #panicindetroit #tvc15 #lifeonmars #staceyheydon #tonykaye #carlosalomar #dennisdavis #georgemurray #thinwhiteduke #kethertomalkuth #drinkdrinkdrainyourglassraiseyourglasshigh #toolatetobegrateful
Happy (chilly) Friday! Time for another round of #fridayintroductions with #thealphabetgame ! We’re up to the letter “M” for mugs! I have a slight obsession with coffee mugs, so much so that Cody has *tried* to institute a one in one out policy. I have converted many of my mugs to plant holders, and my favorites get filled with coffee! This here David Bowie mug is my favorite, and it’s my Friday mug. Why? Because Friday is Bowie Day (I made it up, but you should celebrate it every week, too)! Do you have a favorite coffee mug? * *Cody demanded a photo credit, so here it is: 📷: @radicalruckus
Bowie Fridays: In the wake of Bowie’s passing in January of 2016, the BBC had Rick Wakeman come in to play a piano arrangement of “Life on Mars” since he had played on the original Hunky Dory track 35 years earlier. A video of that performance went viral and a single was released in support of a cancer charity, which sold well. Suddenly Wakeman was flooded with offers from several labels to do something he’d wanted to do for a long time: a record of piano arrangements of classic and classical songs. Variations on a theme is something virtuosos have been doing for centuries, and the baroque showboating of RW’s expressive style, especially considering his respected elder statesmen of rock status, makes for a perfect project. No synthesizers (like on his brilliant Dvorak adaptation for Ken Russell’s Crimes of Passion) or capes, just a Steinway Model D concert grand piano and a set of 15 songs. A mix of iconic compositions in which he’d played on the originals, like the two Bowie tunes included (“Space Oddity” is the other one), Cat Stevens’ “Morning Has Broken” and one of his favorite Yes cuts, “Wonderous Stories” from Going for the One. “Help” had been part of his stage show for years in an arrangement more similar to a Deep Purple version than the Beatles which also has some splashes of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and he closes the album with “Eleanor Rigby”. He does Led Zeppelin’s most famous tune, 10cc’s “I’m Not in Love” and pieces by Gershwin, Tchaikovsky, Fauré and Debussy as well as a couple of traditional tunes (“Amazing Grace”). There is a passionate joy running through this record, so if you like piano music, the kind that warms the cockles of your heart, helps energize your day and leaves a smile on your face, I recommend this painterly platter. #djadjectivealbumoftheday #bowiefriday #bowiefridays #lifeonmars #wonderousstories #morninghasbroken #imnotinlove #steinwaymodeld #grandpiano #rickwakeman

Bowie Friday: David Bowie once told Playboy in an interview that he felt Bab’s cover of “Life on Mars” (a song he dedicated to Sinatra on the back cover of Hunky Dory) was both “atrocious” and “bloody awful”. Streisand herself has said that ButterFly is her least favorite record and wished she could erase it from her catalog. And yet, perhaps shy of being an actual guilty pleasure, this 44 year old curio is quite listenable. Despite then boyfriend Jon Peters’ total lack of production experience, he wisely trusts in the arrangement skills of Tom Scott (who had just finished doing the same thing on Joni Mitchell’s masterpiece Court and Spark). Sure, these kitschy versions of compositions by Graham Nash, Bob Marley, Buck Owens, Paul Anka and Bowie are far from definitive, but like Anka quipped when asked about the album “Barbara can sing her way out of a phone book”. Her voice glides silkily and effortlessly over the lyrics and while that gloss smooths off the sharp corners of the songs, when you’re in the right mood, there is a luxurious overindulgent sweetness, like a sugary bubble bath urging you to go ahead and slide in. #djadjectivealbumoftheday #bowiefriday #bowiefridays #lifeonmars #tomscott #bloodyawful

Bowie Friday: Carlos Alomar was, arguably, Bowie’s most important guitar player (cases can also be made for Mick Ronson and Robert Fripp) for playing on more DB records than any other guitarist and providing the riff for Bowie’s first #1 hit, “Fame” as well as being his musical director on several tours. In ‘87 after Never Let Me Down seemed to let everybody down, Carlos created his first and only solo record. Before Bowie he was in the Apollo Theater house band, toured with James Brown, formed Listen My Brother with Luther Vandross and played in the Main Ingredient. This album is nothing like any of that. The title Dream Generator is acutely appropriate; the songs are layered affairs with synthesizer landscapes that do appear to inspire a sensory experience much like dreaming. Delicate melodies and bounding symphonic movements serve as the foundation for Alomar’s funky guitar riffing. Although the album has an overall New Age feel, the influences are wide ranging. A fine way to let your Friday wash over you and fill you full of dreams. #djadjectivealbumoftheday #bowiefriday #bowiefridays #carlosalomar #dreamgenerator

Bowie Fridays: This excellent 1985 compilation from Rhino collects the best tunes from the first major Australian pop band to make an international impact. The first time I heard their huge ‘67 hit “Friday On My Mind” however, was David Bowie’s iconic cover on Pinups. Of course I had to go find the original and, of course, their tunes exceeded my expectations. Mod in tone and style and bursting with the electric energy of youth demanding to indulge adulthood on its own terms, this album delivers a snappy sampling of rocking ditties. After the band broke up, main songwriter George Young helped put together and produce a band for his younger brothers Angus and Malcolm, but a decade before doing dirty deeds dirt cheap, the Easybeats let us know that they were thinking about the weekend long before it actually arrived. It’s Friday and I’ve got Friday on my mind. #djadjectivealbumoftheday #bowiefriday #bowiefridays #easybeats #georgeyoung #harryvanda #fridayonmymind

Bowie Fridays: This under appreciated classic of the first wave of British punk represents the essence of the DIY model. These 15 year olds decided they wanted to be in a band even though they had no instruments and couldn’t play. They wrote lyrics and made set lists, then procured some guitars and bashed out some chords, and the resulting songs are full of energy and snot, sneering and slightly nasty but still able to charm their way into your head. Eater got their name from a Marc Bolan line and it’s obvious that these kids deeply respected their influences, even as they take the piss out of them, as evidenced by the covers on this record: a couple of VU tunes, Alice Cooper’s “Eighten” (repurposed to their age of “Fifteen”) and of course, the tune that originally pulled me in, “Queen Bitch” (Bowie’s glorious attempt at writing a VU type song). It’s Friday and this an awesome way to underscore that. #djadjectivealbumoftheday #eater #bowiefriday #bowiefridays #queenbitch #andyblade #brianchevette #ianwoodcock #deegenerate #vinylnowspinning

Bowie Fridays: I know about this band because when DB took over the Midnight Special for his 1980 Floor Show, Carmen was one of the acts he featured. Their flamenco infused prog rock included percussive footwork, making them visually stunning, but there’s plenty of interesting things going on musically as well. Fandangos in Space is produced by Bowie intimate Tony Visconti and while the sound is full it is not too heavy, it almost seems to float, if not soar. The drummer, Paul Fenton, would go on to play with T-Rex (until a horse-riding accident sidelined him) and the bassist, John Glascock, would go on to play with Jethro Tull (until his premature death at age 28). In any case, I believe this unfairly obscure record is an excellent addition to any well rounded record collection. #djadjectivealbumoftheday #bowiefriday #bowiefridays #fandangosinspace #bulerias #tonyvisconti #davidallen #robertoamaral #angelaallen #johnglascock #paulfenton #vinylcollection

Bowie Fridays: The first time I heard the Sea and Cake was on the radio in 2003. It was their smooth, creamy cover of “Sound and Vision” and it impressed me. Swathed in the same Kraut-rock synthesizer sounds that inspired Bowie and Eno a quarter century earlier, but with a clean tight feel. Light and airy, with touches of Bossa Nova and tasteful contemporary electronic flourishes floating on minimalist drum samples, the whole album slips on so easily and comfortably. Bowie Fridays: Trippy dippy hippy Biff Rose who wrote comedy sketches for George Carlin and Mort Sahl released this corny thorn 50 years ago. A regular on the Tonight Show and the Smothers Brothers for a couple years, his songs celebrated the hippy, but with a modicum of tongue in cheek. His piano playing has a good-timey feel that evokes the music hall lilts of an earlier era, although similar in scope to the stuff Mason Williams was doing with guitar. There is little doubt that the spirit of this album informs Bowie’s Hunky Dory, mostly through the fingers of Rick Wakeman, but particularly in the cover of “Fill Your Heart” a song co-written by Paul Williams, which was a last minute replacement for the apocalyptic “Bombers”. Bowie sings the superior version because he’s a superior singer and it’s got his sax and Wakeman’s solo, but even so, it’s the cheesiest moment on HD. Rose is still around, btw, 80 years old and he continues making extremely politically incorrect music meant to be comedic (but not that funny, really). Though it’s certainly listenable, The Thorn in Mrs Rose’s Side has become an obscure footnote, but because it served as inspiration for Bowie (he also covered “Buzz The Fuzz” from the record) it remains an important historical document. #djadjectivealbumoftheday #bowiefriday #paulwilliams #biffrose #fillyourheart #buzzthefuzz #paradisealmostlost

Bowie Fridays: Ronno, who was DB’s right hand man through the early ‘70s found himself out of a job when Bowie decided to ‘retire’ Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars from the stage of the Hammersmith Odeon in late ‘73. But Tony DeFries of MainMan had plans to turn the guitar wiz into a pop star. After all, the first time the Warhol Factory saw Bowie play, the consensus was that Ronson was better looking than Bowie and had more charisma. So while David was hacking Orwell into the brilliant Diamond Dogs, Mick made this record. Still firmly in the Bowie camp (he co-wrote two of the songs and provided English lyrics for another) the band included the sideburns and bass of Trevor Bolder and Mike Garson’s unique piano playing as well as John Mayall/Frank Zappa drummer Aynsley Dunbar. It’s really a great record full of blistering guitars that out-Beck Jeff Beck, but despite a decent enough singing voice and a natural gift for arranging, and though this album performed well in the UK, it turns out he wasn’t the breakout solo star DeFries wanted. For the rest of his life, however, he was an amazingly good sideman and producer, enhancing projects by Ian Hunter, Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp, Sparks, Lou Reed, Van Morrison, Elton John and Morrissey (among others). An under appreciated guitarist and and under appreciated record well worth your time and effort. #bowiefriday #djadjectivealbumoftheday #growingupandimfine #heymagetpapa #musicislethal
Bowie Fridays: It’s safe to say that this album would not exist without Bowie. When the Stooges imploded, he got Iggy signed to MainMan and when Pop delivered his mix that CBS refused to release, Bowie was brought in to remix it. I certainly bought it because of DB’s involvement. Under appreciated at the time and now revered as a proto-punk classic, it still rages out of my stereo system like a crazed biker gang taking over a quiet suburban town with wild bacchanalian parties...which makes it a perfect Friday record. #djadjectivealbumoftheday #bowiefriday #bowiefridayvinyl #searchanddestroy #gimmedanger #yourprettyfaceisgoingtohell #jameswilliamson #ronasheton #scottasheton

Bowie Fridays: I became a full fledged Bowie fan in 1980 and when SelecTV premiered The Man who Fell to Earth later that year, I was ready with our newfangled VCR and thus was able to watch Nic Roeg’s adaptation of the Walter Tevis novel over and over until much of it was etched into my brain. Additionally I’ve long felt Broadway would benefit from a show full of Bowie tunes. Jukebox musicals rarely work for a couple of reasons. First, as Paul Simon and Bono discovered, genius songwriting ability does not necessarily translate to the theater. It’s really a different kind of composition. Secondly, in the case of many great artists, like Bowie, they’ve already recorded the ultimate versions of the material. While both of these factors are true of Lazarus, Bowie’s stuff lends itself to reinterpretation and repurposing, and in the hands of talented stage folk like Michael C. Hall and Cristin Milioti, it really does work. This cast album was recorded January 11, 2016; the day after David died, so the vocal performances have an emotional edge. It’s a decent package and includes 4 songs Bowie wrote for the show and recorded with Donny McCaslin’s band. And there’s a nice booklet with lots of photos. Still, I wish they’d included a libretto to give me a sense of the story (it really worked with Hamilton). By all accounts, the show was great, and hopefully they’ll mount a production in Vegas and I’ll get to see it performed. #bowiefriday #djadjectivealbumoftheday

Bowie Fridays: In 2003 when this record came out on the heels of Heathen, the 2nd in a row produced with Tony Visconti (before that, they hadn’t worked together since Scary Monsters in 1980) Bowie claimed in an interview that he liked the pace of making a record a year. It would be a decade before he released The Next Day. Black Star, in the vein of his ‘70s output, breaks new ground and forces listeners to adjust their expectations; it’s alien and strange but if you give it enough time and attention, it is incredibly rewarding. Reality, on the other hand, is instantly rewarding because the hooks and melodies are warm and familiar. Bowie’s voice is like a longtime friend you haven’t seen in awhile, but upon contact you fall immediately back into that comfortable groove. Carlos Alomar, Earl Slick and Mike Garson, all staples from those ‘70s classics, are on board, adding to that feeling of friends reuniting. Some of the songs, like “Bring Me the Disco King” had been kicking around in one form or another for years, and the covers (Modern Lovers and George Harrison) were long rumored to be included on a Pinups II (although my favorite cover associated with this record, “Waterloo Sunset” only appears on the Japanese import). But the originals are hummable keepers. If you never gave this record a chance or you haven’t listened to it in 15 years, I recommend a revisit. #bowiefriday #bringmethediscoking #newkillerstar #thelonliestguy #falldogbombsthemoon #trysomebuysome #lookingforwater #djadjective #djadjectivealbumoftheday

If it’s Bowie Friday, why not spend it with Jareth the goblin king down underground doing the magic dance? If anyone had doubts about a Bowie/Jim Henson joint, the fact is that this movie remains beloved and stands up to repeated viewings 30 year later. Certainly part of its success has to do with a screenplay by Terry Jones of Monty Python and executive production by George Lucas, but the songs DB provides are groovy and fun. With co-production by Arif Mardin and a rhythm section consisting of Will Lee & Steve Ferone, the tunes smile and wink at you with Bowie fully in character. It may not be his best or most important work, but it definitely reflects well on the range and scope of Bowie’s catalog and legacy. #bowiefriday #magicdance #astheworldfallsdown #jareththegoblinking #trevorjones #arifmardin #djadjectivealbumoftheday

Bowie Fridays: Brecht’s first full length play is a cautionary tale about an amoral wandering poet who cheats, steals and murders then dies alone, unloved, hunted and despised; he is the essence of the post modern antihero, perhaps his only redeeming quality is his art. Bowie was morphing from his Scary Monsters persona to the peroxided pop MTV star of Let’s Dance when he performed in this BBC adaptation. Brecht himself wrote the music for the 5 songs on this EP and DB’s voice lends itself evocatively to these melodies. I got this record when it came out. He had become one of my favorite artists a year earlier and I eagerly awaited each new release. Maybe this wasn’t the Fripp encrusted jewels of SM but I had also already read and enjoyed many of Brecht’s works. Suffice to say these story songs definitely informed my youth. #bowiefriday #bowiefridays #djadjectivealbumoftheday

In today's "connected" world, it's not unusual for people to move on from one thing to the next in the blink of an eye. Information seems to get consumed and then pushed aside just as quickly as it was received: instantly. Whatever was the "#1 Trending Topic" yesterday might not even get mentioned today. However not all of us operate this way. At Denver Ted's, the life, art, and death of David Bowie is still on the forefront of our hearts and minds. We aren't done mourning/celebrating Mr. Bowie and his work (nor will we be for quite some time). And that's why this Friday we'll be doing just that: celebrating #bowie. Come join us on #bowiefriday when we'll be blasting nothing but Bowie tunes ALL DAY, we'll be running #happyhour ALL DAY, and we'll be offering an EXTRA 15% OFF ALL ORDERS for anyone who comes in to pay tribute to the legend we lost! Wear a Bowie shirt, paint your face with a lightning bolt, wear a red wig, or bring your favorite Bowie cassette/CD/vinyl in with you; anything you can think of to remind us of the great #starman and we'll give you 15% off your order. So come hang out with us this Friday; great music, great times, and of course great food! And if no one else joins us...then we'll still have a fun #bowiefriday by ourselves! 😁 #davidbowie #ripbowie #starman #bowiefriday #spaceoddity #celebratebowie #bowieallday #bowiealltheway #legendsneverdie #denverteds #beefnbeer #caphilldenver #happyhourallday
wishing all a very #bowiefriday
