October 15th, 1940 - On this day in World War Two history, A Heavy Luftwaffe raid on London, Birmingham, and Bristol starts 900 fires. This was perhaps the deepest and most intimidating part of the war for British civilians. During the Battle of Britain, which only recently ended on the timeline, the Luftwaffe was interested in destroying Britain’s ability to fight a war. They targeted British shipping, ports, industry, airfields, factories, and radar stations in order to not only gain air superiority, but also to cripple Britain’s ability to fight a war. However, when a stray German HE-111 went off course and accidentally, or purposely (we don’t know), bombed London, everything changed. Due to the RAF Bomber Command’s retaliatory raid of the German capital of Berlin, Hitler ordered the direct bombing of civilian centers, mostly London. Hitler’s ego was so high that rather than sticking to the strategic initiative, he completely doomed any chance he had at defeating Great Britain. Under Winston Churchill, the British were never going to surrender to Germany, no matter how many bombed were dropped on their cities, and so all the Blitz did was give the RAF time to rebuild itself in the background and hit the Luftwaffe harder and harder until Germany had to switch to night raids and eventually stop nightly bombings as a whole. They could then only mount occasional raids every couple of days, and that would continue to decrease from there. It was the turning point of air superiority on the western front. The British RAF would continue to grow larger and larger while the Luftwaffe turned weaker and weaker until it was unable to mount a resistance to the combined strength of the Red Air Force, the USAAF, and the RAF.
