We are now on the Camino de Santiago Frances, or the most popular camino route in Spain. It is an amazing place where people from all walks of life all around the world meet. Since we cycle we go faster than the hikers and although we cant mingle while en route in the same way, we can observe groups forming, friendships growing and see literally 50 people a day from all over the world sharing in the same journey. Where else would a man from Denmark and a man from Florida walk for days in the desert together and talk about everything under the sun? And we have seen dozens of these new friendships in our short glimpses into the pilgrims way. Of course many parts of it seem a little touristy but that doesn't outweigh the specialness and feeling of international connections deepening that we experience every day. We have only been on the route for a few days but we already know it will be strange to leave it and go back to the much more quiet, but also wonderful and free, life of a bike tourer on the road.
And we made it over the Pyrenees. 1,450 meters of elevation gain over 16 km with a good amount of dirt track and rocks and a few 20%+ grades and many many sheep.... We are pooped but now in España! Now to continue the camino de Santiago.
