So many new faces here! I’m so happy to welcome you! This is probably a good time to share a little bit about me 😍 • • I was a flight attendant for many years. Most of my career was with a charter company that allowed me to travel around the world. I miss it, but it’s a job for a young soul, body, and liver 😜🍻 • My husband is truly my best friend. It’s not be an easy road, but we’ve only become stronger, better communicators, more in love as every year passes.🥰 • I have 3 sisters and I am the baby in my family, although I’m the tallest. Don’t let the good hair fool you. I’ve had some sever bouts of it where I’ve had to wear hair pieces and hats. Sometimes the spots can be hidden, and other times it’s the size of a softball. My head tingles right before it starts to fall out. There’s no way to “fix” it, however I do take supplements that help to heal the gut, and my alopecia stays in remission if I remember to take them.👍 • My husband will retire from the Navy this year after 30 years of service. Low back pain?? Most people have experienced a stiff low back after a hard days work, workout, or just slept weird. That stiffness usually goes away though, right? But what if it doesn’t? A study from the American Chiropractic Association reports that Low Back Pain (LBP) costs Americans at least $50 BILLION in health care costs each year, and that’s not even counting the lost wages and decreased productivity. Prolonged exposure to bad posture is a major factor when talking about LBP. A good amount of people have desk jobs which cause havoc on the spine if not practicing good posture. If that bad posture persists long enough then spinal degeneration can happen when the discs start to lose their height due to lack of motion and different pressures. Proper posture is extremely important if you have a desk job and proper lifting techniques when lifting is just as important. That’s where chiropractic can get involved. Doing posture assessments during treatment and correcting the biomechanics of how the body is functioning and also doing muscle strengthening exercises to train your body to stay in those good posture positions is a major focus. The 5 most common mistakes in posture are: 1) Hyperextension of the knees, AKA “locking them out.” This is very tough on the knee joints and causes increased wear and tear, plus potential pain and injury over time. . 2) Hyperlordosis of the lumbar spine, AKA this looks like too much of a curvature in the low back and the pelvis dips forward while the buttocks sticks out posteriorly. The core is not well engaged and the spine is not supported and aligned, which again leads to issues and pain. . 3) Protracted shoulders and scapulas. This looks like the shoulders coming forward of the body, chest closed off and shortened, and rounding of the thoracic spine (mid back). Also very detrimental to our spinal alignment and does not allow our muscles to do the work, thus putting undue strain on other structures such as ligaments. . 4) Forward head position. This is when the chin juts forward and the head and neck are not aligned with the rest of the spine. Many issues with neck pain can result from this. . 5) General slouching of the body. Often, people are just not actively engaged in their posture and proper stance. They do not have their musculature active and it appears as though their body is not strong and aligned because of this.
Wellness Wednesday! Often I have clients come in that are complaining of neck and upper back pain. This usually coincides with a posture that is developed while sitting at a desk for long periods of time. We call this Head Forward Posture and an Anterior Rotation of the glenohumeral joint (aka shoulder). The first photo depicts the HFP and AR. The second depicts a more desirable posture. But how do we get from one to the other? I recommend that my clients perform this simple exercise. Posture is one of the main attributes of an athlete that can affect performance. Poor posture throughout the day, during training, during practice, during competition WILL lead to less than ideal performance. Running is controlled falling. This exemplifies what not to do. In 1920, Ida Pauline Rolf received her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University. Despite the resistance she faced as a woman in the field of science, she furthered her knowledge of the body through research in organic chemistry at the Rockefeller Institute. Driven to find solutions to her own health problems as well as those of her two sons, she spent many years studying and experimenting with different systems of healing and manipulation. Throughout most of her life she was intrigued with and explored many forms of alternative healing including homeopathy, osteopathy, chiropractic and yoga. The notion that proper alignment, physiologic function and anatomical structure are related is the basis of many of these healing methods. Dr. Rolf agreed that the body functions best when the bony segments are in proper alignment. She added her observations that lasting improvement in alignment and an overall sense of well-being required a closer look at the effects of gravity on our bodies. She believed that the imbalances in structure placed demands on the body's pervasive network of soft tissues: muscles, fascia, tendons and ligaments, thereby creating compensations throughout the body structure. Dr. Rolf posed this fundamental question: "What conditions must be fulfilled in order for the human body-structure to be organized and integrated in gravity so that the whole person can function in the most optimal and economical way?" Her life's work was devoted to this investigation which led to the system of soft tissue manipulation and movement education that we now call Rolfing®. In order to pass along her work to others and to make the education process accessible, she developed an expedient series of ten sessions, which came to be known as the Ten Series. Dr. Rolf continues to be recognized as a pioneer and leader in soft tissue manipulation and movement education. She died in 1979 at the age of 83. #idarolf#rolfing
