Beautiful people! I’ve still got a few spots left for my INTRO TO CERAMICS WORKSHOP next Saturday the 6th of July. Come and make several pieces and learn various techniques while indulging in some handmade morning tea. Booking via link in my bio. Shoot me a DM if you have questions. x
I spent the morning (after unpacking the kiln) making carrots. Well actually no. They just looked a lot like carrots. Neat, perfectly peeled carrots. But in actual fact were handles. ‘Cause I had a bit of an accident with some honey twirlers recently... and possibly dropped a small batch of them resulting in their heads being unceremoniously separated from their handles. So I made new handles on the lathe using reclaimed (rescued) olive and peach wood. I forgot how much I loved using a lathe and it was a total pleasure to get immersed in this today. There’s still a way to go before they are finished, so I will post more in my stories tomorrow. In the meantime enjoy watching this #potter pretend she is a #woodworker ... X Ilona

Working away in the studio on this cold evening. Giving titles to this body of work has been so much fun. All of the titles have come from the tags and blurbs of well known social media influencers on instagram.

I had a bit of a koala whoopsie in this batch! I underglaze my critters and then dunk them in a pool of clear glaze. Sometimes the balance can be totally wrong, sometimes it’s perfect, sometimes I leave them in the glaze for too long and other times I don’t leave them in the glaze for long enough. A lot of this batch had an unbalanced mix of clear glaze and the koalas were dunked in the mix for a few seconds too long. You can see the bubbly nose on the critter in the photo is a build up of too much glaze. It usually doesn’t bother me but there’s too many pieces to let one go. Dang it! I thought I was finally on a roll without any mistakes and seconds pieces. But this last batch has reminded me to be a bit more of a perfectionist. Clay involves so much science and creativity, I think that’s why I’m so addicted to it’s challenges and changes. I just put a poll up on my stories about what to do with these pieces and I would love your opinion 💕✨🌻

At last weekend’s opening of Intersections and Boundaries by Mel Robson, the Araluen Arts Centre was pleased to acquire this beautiful ceramic work to add to our art collection. The Araluen Art Collection has a strong focus on works that speak of Central Australian Country and Place, and this beautiful work showcases the vastness of this area through the lens of cartography and mapping. Visit the Araluen Galleries from 10am daily to see this wonderful exhibition, the result of Robson’s works as the Araluen Cultural Precinct Creative in Residence recipient Image: Mel Robson, A Sense of Place 4, 2019, handbuilt earthenware, decals.
