I was not that sore, surprisingly, so either I recovered really well overnight or I didn’t work hard enough. Naturally, I’m gonna lean towards the latter. Is It Functional? __  For years I didn’t use the term “functional training” because I couldn’t define it in a clear and concise way that made sense. People were talking about it, clients were asking for it, but nobody was describing what it meant. __  Functional training is not defined by balancing on one leg or specific movements -- there is no list of functional exercises. What’s functional to me may be useless to you. Does that make sense? Here’s how I define it; a movement, drill, exercise is functional by the result it produces.  __  Calf raises might not be functional for you, but they are to a physique athlete that needs to bring her calves up. I crawl, climb, lift, carry, push and press stuff -- all functional to my goal of longevity and being strong (enough), durable and to live a certain quality of life. I’m not going to win a powerlifting meet or bodybuilding competition, but I’m doing me just fine.  __  Is the farmers carry a functional exercise? It was for the woman in the picture. She came to me with a goal of skiing -- just getting on the mountain and having fun again. She was 2 years post ACL and never fully recovered (physically or mentally). She crushed it! We balance, crawl, carry, jump, pull, press . . . and other fundamental movement stuff -- all taking her closer to the goal which is often a moving target. __  It’s about training that takes you closer to better. Some might think that’s too simple, but I like simple. Do you have another definition of functional training?

Skipping the fundamental movements that this girl is clearly lacking, to perform advanced Olympic lifting with poor technique and excessive load. ——— THIS IS JUST NOT ON! ——— Children should be treated as children. They have not yet developed the physical literacy nor competency nor earned the right to perform such training.
