Losers: We were drinking coffee the other day. I told him about my latest crush as he sipped the last of the leftover elixir in the cup that his mother had gifted him on his last birthday. I delineated on the elongated face and straight eyebrows of my latest fantasy. I couldn’t recall the colour of the eyes on his generally deadpan face. He quickly searched the guy on Facebook and sighed. You see, while I saw the warmth of the stranger’s infrequent smile, my friend only noticed the girls wrapped around his frame. Whereas I saw an artist, my friend saw a pretentious jerk. He saw the carefully concealed powder on my lover’s face, fragmented into crevices filled with both pleasure and pain. He asked me why I had a horrible taste in men. I smiled. . We were drinking beer the other day. I got drunk and rambled about Bukowski in my intoxication amongst a group of friends who stared as he desperately tried to shut me up. He told me the next day that I might have a saviour complex, that I might have a thing for losers. I smiled. . We were drinking water the other day. My friend proposed me, Dairy Milk in one hand, 5 Star in another. The guy with the elongated face stood beside me, put the noodle-like fingers of his right hand on my left shoulder, and told my friend that I don’t like losers. I smiled. Later, we ate the chocolates in the backyard. . I don't drink liquids with my friend anymore. But, when someone genuinely smiles at me, inquires about my health, gives me honest opinion, shares chocolate-chip cookies, surprises me with occasional phone calls just to hear my voice, or hugs me tightly, I remember him. I start wondering if he still gulps down liquids from the cup that his mother had once gifted him on his birthday under the layer of thick soil in my backyard.
