Photo by @FransLanting In Antarctica a new generation of emperor penguin chicks is being nurtured right now. Parents cradle them on their feet to keep them warm and off the sea ice. It takes heroic parenting skills to raise a chick in this brutal environment where temperatures can drop to 60 degrees below zero with winds of more than 100 miles per hour. I spent a month camped on sea ice near an emperor penguin colony to document how the chicks grow up. Go to @FransLanting to see more images of these remarkable birds and follow @ChristineEckstrom for more stories of our encounters with wild animals around the world. #penguin#nature#emperorpenguin#antarctica#chick#parent#nurture#love#naturephotography
#tbt 7 years ago today (10 Dec 2011) when we arrived at the South Pole in time to join the celebration of 100 Anniversary of Roald Amundsens famous discovery of the Pole as the first in human history. For Amundsen and his three companions this was just half way in their expedition - they had to ski all the way back again. For us this was the ending point of a relatively short kite-expedition and we could celebrate with champagne and good food at the Scott-Amundsen base together with, among many other, the Norwegian Prime Minister 🥂 ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________#utogopp #patagonia#scarpa#smartwool#olivita#helsport#utno#framnorway#bragesmolde#roaldamundsen#southpole#antarctica @patagonianorge @patagoniaeurope @patagonia @smartwoolnorge @smartwooleurope @smartwool @scarpanorge @scarpaspa @outdoor_as @olivita.as @helsport @framnorway @bragesmolde
Feeling so blessed to have ventured across the Drake’s Passage surviving over 100 knots and 42 ft waves from a trip of a lifetime in Antarctica with these amazing women from all over the globe. ⚓️ When I saw @GirlsLoveTravel was hosting this #antarctica trip with @OceanwideExp I was so excited to celebrate my 7th continent with other solo travelers! 🗺 Spending time with each of you whether it was chasing earlier flights due to airline strikes, helping put our life jackets on, sharing seasick patches, taking pictures for eachother when a penguin walked up to us because we were stuck in the moment, being rescued from camping because weather grew too dangerous, doing makeovers and photoshoots on the upper deck, getting to know eachother over meals sharing travel stories, waking eachother up to run outside because whales were spotted at 11 o’clock outside the Ortelius, or running in -2 degrees celsius water for the polar plunge plus so many more memories have all made this trip what it was... ⛴ My favorite part of traveling is serendipity and I truly believe people come into our lives for a reason to make an everlasting impact on our life stories. 🌎 There was not enough time to spend with all of you amazing ladies in the largest wilderness area on earth and I’m SO proud to know ALL of you! Forever GLT Boat Two 2018! ❄️ Photo creds: @GirlsLoveTravel 📸 #gltlove#girlslovetravel#gltantarctica#antarcticaambassadors#iaato#wanderlust
Antarctica is flat right? Day 17 - live location - 84.6342S 79.1655W #hsx2018 . Weather today has been sunny at the start of the day but now snowing and white our conditions! with an air temperature of -15 a 06knot wind making it - 23 degrees. . So my song of the day goes to Adam Fearn with Me Julie by Shaggy Ft Ali G! . 19.7km! The snow must be getting harder finally :) We even managed 3km in 50mins today so that was great. For some reason I ended up with a lot of the uphill sections today however! Whoever said Antarctica is flat was a massive lier! It comes in waves and often you can end up with the same section of the wave as we rotate leading at the front. . It started it off a lot colder than we have been used to these last couple of days and we also changed direction. Heading on a bearing of 154 degrees towards Theils. This also meant we went into the Easterly wind a bit more. But now the winds have calmed and the snow is falling. Hopefully good gliding tomorrow and only three more days to Theils and a rest day! #fingerscrossed#adventuretime#nopainnogain#antarctica#southpole#snow#pull
Hello, Portland! It's Monday, December 10th, and we're open from 2pm-7pm. This month, we're hosting Terri Nelson's Antarctica exhibit. It's a collection of watercolor paintings, sketches, photographs, and field notes from her time at Palmer Station in 2016. It is an incredibly fascinating look at the continent most of us won't experience for ourselves. These watercolors depict the snowy sheathbill, the primary focus of Nelson's assignment of drawing the birds & animals in their natural habitat. Known as "shit chickens" in local slang, they are kleptoparasites, stealing food instead of hunting. While this is predominantly a viewing exhibit, the prints from Nelson's sketchbook are for sale. We invite you to take a moment out of your busy holiday schedule and see this exhibit. You deserve to treat yourself to art this season. See you soon! #terrinelson#antarctica#helioscopestudio#watercolor#snowysheathbill#wilsonspetrel#arctictern#elephantseal
During our most recent trip to Antarctica to visit the Snow Hill Emperor Penguin colony, we got a true appreciation for the "White Continent" from both ground level and aerial views from the helicopter, which were stunning. ___ Since the Emperor Penguins often travel long distances from the water to the colony on the sea ice, they alternate walking and tobogganing on their bellies for efficiency. Given how difficult it was for us to walk 1km/.6 miles, it's exponentially more difficult for them. ___ Since I was awestruck by this stunning backdrop and the textures within the ice and snow , I sought to capture this lone penguin against it as well as a caravan of them traveling back to the colony to feed their chicks (coming soon). I really liked the sense of place that this backdrop lent to the imagery. ___ As mentioned, conditions were pretty rough our first day -10C/14F without windchill and -20/-4F with windchill. To minimize the risk of frostbite, I was wearing long underwear + @arcteryx base layer + Fleece+Arc'teryx down jacket+another down jacket+waterproof outer layer on top and long underwear + ski pants on bottom. Our faces were fully covered with balaclavas + a wool hat that covered the side of our faces + hood pulled up. And I had on liner gloves with hand warmers over them inside waterproof/wind proof gloves. His served us well since we spent most of our time lying in the snow for the best perspectives. ____ #teamkaptainkenny#antarctica#earthcapture#allbeauty_addiction #lensbible#magicpict#canonusa#yourshotphotographer#natgeotravelphoto#bbctravel#adventuretravel#climatechange#conservation#wildplanet#bbcearth#natgeowild#earthonlocation#penguin#penguins#wildgeography#exploretheworld#ourplanetdaily#fantastic_earth #roamtheplanet#wildlifeaddicts#animalkingdom#exclusive_wildlife #destination_wild #teamcanon#canonfanphoto @bbcearth @natgeowild @quarkexpeditions @canonusa

West Point Island, originally known as ‘Albatross Island’ was recently visited by OOE Photographer-In-Residence @daisygilardini. Daisy says, “Our last excursion of the trip could not have been more perfect. Sunshine and just the right wind to have plenty of Black browed Albatross on the wing!” #albatross#wingspan#antarctica#oneoceanexpeditions#birdloversofinstagram
