A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows the main reason African-Americans die younger than whites is heart disease. It finds heart disease, mostly caused by high blood pressure, accounts for fully one-third of the disparity. And the main factor raising blood pressure? A Southern-style diet. • • George Howard of the University of Alabama at Birmingham and colleagues studied just under 7,000 people who had been taking part in a larger, long-term study of diet and lifestyle. The volunteers got their first medical exams for the study between 2003 and 2007, and were examined again an average of nine years later. • • Howard’s team compared blacks to whites in the study. They checked weight, blood pressure, cholesterol; asked questions about drinking alcohol, about income and about exercise habits; and checked for symptoms of stress and depression. They asked what type of foods people ate, also. • • To some degree, the Southern diet represents the American diet overall, loaded with white flour, sugar, salt and meat. But this study showed big differences between blacks and whites in terms of eating the least-healthy foods. “African-Americans eat not just more of this diet, but a lot more of this diet,” Howard said. And blacks were also less likely to eat healthy foods that lower the risk of heart disease, including vegetables, fruits and whole grains, the study showed. • • • #marquisirving#thevegannupe™️🌱♦️ #africanamericans#africans#americans#southerfood#highbloodpressure#diabetes#heartdisease#hypertension#cancer#heartattack#health#wellness#nutrtion#vegan#vegancommunity#vegans#plantbased#plantbaseddiet#healthy#healthylifestyle#healthyliving#healthyfood#detox#fitness#meditation#subscribe#linkinbio

So let me get this straight Mr. Marco Rubio, #senator of #florida. You represent us Floridians & fellow #americans and the 1st Senate legislation you propose is to #protect Israel? What the fuck they got you in pocket or something. The government is shutdown, people are literally working for free in your state and you choose to this. You definitely gotta get outta there. Don’t know how this dude keeps getting re-elected especially being from South Florida🤬 Israel is 6,621 miles away from #miami buddy. Yes the USA. #politricks#changethesystem#corruption#governmentcorruption
I call myself the #fivetoninenomad because I love traveling but I also love my job 🚀 and I don’t want to give it up to try my hand at being a full-time nomad 🏕 — Unfortunately, because of the government shutdown (which is now officially the longest shutdown in US history) I can’t do either ❌❌ I’m considered a “non-exempted” employee, meaning my position is not essential to support critical safety and security operations for the US government. It’s actually illegal for me to do any work.🚫 — You’d think that during a #governmentshutdown it’d be a great time to vacation 🏝 and enjoy my “time off” without wasting my annual leave 🏔 But, as a result of not being allowed to work I’m also not getting paid 💰💰 along with 800,000 federal employees. So I’ve trimmed my spending to cover the essentials and super cheap entertainment. — I’ve still been trying to make the most of this shutdown by reading 📚 and writing 💻 and finding free and cheap things to do in #houston. And today I had the chance to do something really meaningful. — I stood in solidarity with NASA employees, TSA agents, union members, students and interns, and other hardworking #americans as we protested the furlough and asked #congress to take action to end this #shutdown. Hopefully our voices will be heard and this shutdown will end soon. But if not, you can catch me at the next #rally which will be organized by the Houston @afgeunion.
An American's interesting response to the New York Times proposal to Americans to travel to Iran Two days ago, the New York Times proposed Americans 52 travel destinations for 2019, one of which was Iran. The American newspaper, titling "Tourism cautiously returns to this Middle East Jewel," has highlighted Iran as one of these travel destinations. Norma Lee, a New York Times reader, wrote in comments on this report: "Thank you for finally acknowledging Iran." I have been leading IranCustomTours for 10 years and have arranged easy.safe.tours for hundreds of Americans. Everyone have returned grateful for have seen the "Real Deal" behind the media muddle. In addition to the incredible sites, Iranians are the "most friendly", as the Anthony Bourdain acknowledged. Particulary today, it is important to open communications and be a citizen-diplomat. #iran#newyorktimes#iranians#americans#normalee#middleeast
🤢🤒😷🤔😠 Reposted from @freedom_faction - Psychiatric drug use is on the rise in the U.S., with one out of every six #americans now taking some type of medication in this category. This is highly concerning given the scary side effects and poor effectiveness of many of these drugs, but there is one particularly disturbing aspect of this trend that seems to get glossed over, and that is the extraordinary number of children who are taking such drugs. Mental health watchdog group Citizens Commission on #humanrights is drawing attention to the concerning fact that more than a million kids younger than six in our nation are currently taking #psychiatricdrugs. While around half of these children are four to five years old, an incredible 274,804 of them are younger than a year old. That’s right: babies are being given psychiatric drugs. The number rises for toddlers aged two to three, with 370,778 kids in this category taking psychiatric drugs overall. Data from IMS Health shows that the situation only gets worse as kids get older, with 4,130,340 kids aged 6 to 12 taking some type of psychiatric drug. You might be forgiven for assuming that most of these statistics are made up by kids taking #adhd drugs given how common that approach seems to be nowadays, but it really only accounts for a small portion of it, with 1,422 of those younger than a year old and just over 181,000 of those aged four to five taking ADHD drugs. #antidepressants and #antipsychotics put forth some surprising figures, but the biggest category of psychotic drugs given to children appears to be anti-anxiety drugs. Just over 227,132 babies under one and nearly 248,000 of those aged four to five take these medications. These numbers are even more shocking when you consider the fact that experts believe these estimates are far too low and the real numbers are actually much higher, due in part to the tendency for some doctors to hand out psychiatric medications for “off-label”
This is why we are working hard to bring you the information you need to know UP FRONT! Patients Are Turning To GoFundMe To Fill Health Insurance Gaps . . . From our friends at @npr GoFundMe, the largest online, crowdsourced fundraising platform, says contributors have raised more than $5 billion, all told, from 50 million donations in the eight years it has been in business. Setting up a GoFundMe page has also become a go-to way for people in need of help to pay their doctors and other health providers. Medical fundraisers now account for 1 in 3 of the website's campaigns, and they bring in more money than any other GoFundMe category, says GoFundMe CEO Rob Solomon. "In the old paradigm you would give $20 to somebody who needed help," Solomon says. "In the new paradigm, you'll give $20, you'll share that and that could turn into 10, 20, 50 or 100 people doing that. So, the $20 could turn into hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars." Stories of tragic illness and financial hardship — all of them with pictures of those suffering — are easy to find in GoFundMe's medical section. One such case is musician Carolyn Deal, from Marshall, N.C., who lost nearly all her hearing after a traumatic brain injury. Deal has raised nearly $25,000 for alternative treatments and procedures she would like to try that her health insurance won't cover.
