Does anyone else start books only to get distracted by other novels? I started reading Hotel World earlier this year and was really enjoying it but I kept putting it down to read something else. I’m going to make a conscious effort to finish it this month but I’m interested to see if anyone else has this experience
@thebursin 💘 #thebursin#kerembursin#keremsayer#mkd#alismith#dmitry

It's never the wrong season for a book by Ali Smith. Playful and entertaining, yet in a sort of under cover way seriously questioning issues related to Brexit, refugees, Trump, global warming, social media, and our modern way of life. Excellent and accessible. 🌼 #alismith #winter #ilovepeonies #pionensdag
"This isn't fiction, the man says. This is the Post Office." . . . "All across the country, people felt it was the wrong thing. All across the country people felt it was the right thing. All across the country, people felt they'd really lost. All across the country, people felt they'd really won. All across the country people felt they'd done the right thing and other people had done the wrong thing." . . . "It is like democracy is a bottle someone can threaten to smash and do a bit of damage with. It has become a time of people saying stuff to each other and none of it actually ever becoming dialogue. It is the end of diaogue." . . . Autumn, the first of Ali Smith's seasonal quartet, was a coincidental find whilst browsing a library shelf. For some reason I thought it wasn't the first in the series (it is) and really didn't expect much. Many 'novel of the year' plastered books fail to impress me. But I went with some positive reviews on bookstagram and immediately fell for the quality and energy of Smith's prose. One of the opening scenes recounts the protoganist, Elisabeth's bizarre enounter with a Post Office clerk and a Check and Send form. Sharp dialogue ensues, and humours. Immediately I thought of Don Delillo and his commentary on modern life, but Smith adds warmth and greater nuancy to her characters. Daniel and Elisabeth are friends, with a Harold and Maude vibe, and here follows a collage of memories, commentaries on the present, vivid dream-like passages that are both unsettling but also glorious. It has been described as a 'Brexit' novel. Perhaps. But it transcends the stupidity of this political sink-hole, and emerges as a novel of reconciling culture, art, humanity and above all, love. #bookstagram #bibliophile #booklover #alismith
At 28, I am going through what feels like my 5th midlife crisis. I'm starting a new degree, and finding my feet again in the world around me. I've stopped liking so much of what I used to enjoy and realising that I'm much more interested in hobbies that I dismissed. I'm genuinely taking time to be a better friend, family member, and partner. It's delightful and exhausting and freeing. #bookstagram #alismith #university #uneuni #breakfast #porridge #currentlyreading #deskview #personal #thoughts

auld // for the super secret group helping immigrants. this is one of my favorite Ali Smith books yet, and definitely my favorite of the seasonal quartet. hopelessly hopeful is the perfect way to describe a book that talks about the immigrant crisis and the idea of “my country first.” complex characters, some who learn and grow, some who don’t (unfortunately) . . . . . . . . . . . #embroidery #stitches #1yearofstitches #1yearofstitches2019 #365project #bookstagram #bookish #book #bookaddict #broidery #etsyseller #embroiderylove #embroideryhoop #needlework #vsco #vscocam #thatsdarling #stitchart #needlepoint #calledtobecreative #makersmovement #theeverydayproject #alismith #spring #auld #seasonal #immigration
Third Pride read (unless I'm forgetting something): Ali Smith's poignant and beautiful meditation on loss, stories, beauty and regaining hope. Much in keeping with her current literary quartet. A series of lectures, a literary game and a ghost story. Highly recommended, but then, I feel that way about almost every single Ali Smith. #pride #pridereading #amreading #currentlyreading #readinginbed #książka #artful #alismith
Contemporary women writers you should read! ✍️ • Here’s a list of female writers I absolutely love and recommend! These are all fiction books; a non-fiction list is coming up soon! All of these literary works can be found in English! Some of these women are alive, some live through their work now. All of them helped shape my world. 💭 Other female writers I love couldn’t be featured in this list (look at the size of this pile already😅) but I think this is a start if you’re looking to explore literature written by women! • Anaïs Nin (1903-1977) Han Khang (1970-) Eve Babitz (1943-) Chris Kraus (1955-) Elif Batuman (1977-) Ayobami Adebayo (1988-) Ali Smith (1962-) Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986) Chiamanda Ngozi Adichie (1977-) Anna Burns (1962-) Ottessa Moshfegh (1981-) Sheila Heti (1976-) Sally Rooney (1991-) Clarice Lispector (1920-1977) Zadie Smith (1975-) Meg Wolitzer (1959-) • Any writer from this list you love? “Whoever makes up the story makes up the world..." —Ali Smith, Autumn Writing is powerful. Writing is world-building. And reading is too. Use your power wisely! . . . #brinybooks #timetoread #alismith #readingmatters #onlinebookstore #readmore #whyiread
‘We want your pasts and your presents because we want your futures too. We want all of you.’ • Spring is the third in Ali Smith’s quartet of experimental novels that explore our current social and political landscape through the changing of the seasons. Here we follow the intertwining lives of Richard (a filmmaker), Brit (a guard at an Immigration Removal Centre) and Florence (whose story is slowly revealed) as each of them battle against their own bitter winters and seek new beginnings. • For me, each novel has been an improvement on the last, and they’ve all been brilliant (just Summer to go). Smith is the ultimate wordsmith, deftly manipulating language and form in a way that is recognisable yet always surprising. The books are topical and political by nature, but far from a drag - Smith is simply exploring the why and the how of where we are, and appealing to the ‘good’ human in all (or most) of us. I’d recommend reading in one sitting if you have the time/energy - it’s a pulsating, compelling and emotive read. • Review by Anna • #shelfabsorbed #shelfie #bookreview #bookstagram #review #spring #alismith #mysharedshelf #igreads #booksofinstagram #bookshelf #hamishhamilton

“I had always day-dreamed about having my own bookshop, in a sort of fairy-tale way. So, when my job in the music industry wasn't turning out the way I had hoped, I suddenly thought, ‘It's time!’. I visited dozens of existing bookshops which were for sale all over the UK, but none of them seemed quite right for me. I was working just outside Kibworth at the time and my boyfriend and I would walk up to the high street for lunch each day, where I spotted an empty shop. I pressed my nose up to the window every lunchtime and wondered if I might be looking at my future bookshop. It turns out that I was and six weeks later I opened Kibworth Books. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary this year and I absolutely love it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One of my favourite things about being a bookseller is the daily unpacking of boxes of brand-new books (like it's Christmas every day) and seeing the look of joy on people's faces when they enter our bookshop for the first time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Being surrounded by books and 'bookchat' all day means I am still always learning about life, the universe and everything. I love the feeling of my brain being stimulated in so many different areas of knowledge and it soaking up so many stories and ideas. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ During #indiebookshopweek, I can’t wait to recommend some books to our customers, particularly Elizabeth and Her German Garden by Elizabeth von Arnim, The Magus by John Fowles, Tigers in Red Weather by Liza Klaussmann, The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt & Spring by Ali Smith. “ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Debbie James is the Owner and Manager of @kibworthbooks in Leicestershire #bookshopheroes

This morning I finished Ali Smith's Spring. This is the first of the seasons quartet that I've read in print! I pretty much devoured it, such an amazing book that leaves you somewhat haunted by the state of our current society. · Also pictured is my new bracelet from @oh_someday with a quote from Slaughterhouse-Five. I'm wearing it all the time as a reminder to myself to accept life as it comes. But perhaps also as a challenge that others let life pass them by without attempting to influence change. · Has anyone else read Ali Smith's season books? Which is your favourite so far? · #bookstagram #books #alismith #seasonsquartet #spring #soitgoes #yarnsandstoriesreads

"All we are is eyes looking for the unbroken or the edges where the broken bits might fit each other." - Ali Smith, How to be both
Reading of Autumn whilst in full Summertime. Also slowly dying, first day of @invisalign and it hurts like 🔥🔨. Silver lining, total invisible so cheers to that 🥂
"It wasn't about justice, or there not being justice. Well, it was on one level. It was about who was in charge of justice, who gets to say what it is." #alismith #spring . Hey all, sorry I've been MIA lately, reading has been slow, UNI hectic, and packing/traveling stressful. Buuut I finally managed to finish Spring during my long ass trainride (dont get me started, the trainride took 12hrs, and u can DRIVE that distance in less than 7hrs). Where do I even start ?? I fucking loved this book so much. I have been loving both Autumn and Winter, and while Autumn was my favorite before, I dont know if I can any longer pick a favorite because Spring was So. Good. I dont have the words to articulate my feelings about this book, or any of the other for that matter, but I really do recommend them to anyone! I dont know how but truly, Ali captures the essence of the seasons, and not only that but the specific contemporary topics and issues (such as the hostility towards refugees) in these seasons as well. My mind is blown by this writing it truly differs from your avarage fave author. (No shade tho, this is simply just an other style that I love, and it dont make the rest any less). So yes. A definite recommendation. And for those wondering; no, you dont have to read Autum and Winter first in order to read Spring, you can go right ahead and read it rn!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5
«Mess up my climate, I’ll fuck with your lives. Your lives are nothing to me. I’ll yank daffodils out of the ground in December. “I've been selling books for just seven years. After many years in industry I wanted to be my own boss in a business I really cared about and really connected with the people it served. I think bookselling is a vocation and I'm the happiest and least stressed I've ever been in any job. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My favourite part about working in a bookshop is the people. From customers of all ages to authors and my team, you get to meet so many interesting people who are interested in the world around them and generous enough to share their stories with you. I have so many memorable moments as a bookseller, one of which was a customer last year who picked up the first volume of The Letters of Sylvia Plath and declared: ‘Oh I need to read this - my dad used to go out with her!’ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The books I’ll be recommending in my shop this #indiebookshopweek include: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • Spring by Ali Smith, because she is simply one of our great modern writers ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • The Secret Barrister. It’s a searing glimpse of how our legal system operates ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • Underland by Robert Macfarlane which explores the underground and is a warning of our future ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • Colin and Lee, Carrot & Pea by Morag Hood, because it’s about friends who are very different ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood - because the sequel comes out in September ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Please shop locally. You're supporting local people and it's better for the environment!” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Marie Moser is the Owner of @theedinburghbookshop in Edinburgh, Scotland. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #bookshopheroes ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After winter comes spring. This has been a heavy week. Sudan. Grenfell. I wanted to post a review of this glorious book, and I will but just not yet. In any case, @kindle_o_phile posted a beautiful ode/review so anything I attempt won't do justice. I'll just leave you with this quote (it's such a quotable book) : "I'm tired of the news. I'm tired of the way it makes things spectacular that aren't, and deals so simplistically with what's truly appalling. I'm tired of the vitriol. I'm tired of anger. I'm tired of the meanness. I'm tired of selfishness. I'm tired of how we're doing nothing to stop it. I'm tired of how we're encouraging it. I'm tired of the violence that's on it's way, that's coming, that hasn't happened yet. I'm tired of liars. I'm tired of sanctified liars. I'm tired of how those liars have let this happen. I'm tired of having to wonder whether they did it out of stupidity or did it on purpose. I'm tired of lying governments. I'm tired of people not caring whether they're being lied to anymore. I'm tired of being made to feel this fearful." . . . #bookstagram #autumn #alismith

“…the boy sits up, faces the woman’s house, holds his holy votive tablet up in both hands as if to heaven, up at the level of his head like a priest raising the bread, cause this place is full of people who have eyes and choose to see nothing, who all talk into their hands as they peripatate and all carry these votives, some the size of a hand, some the size of a face or a whole head, dedicated to saints perhaps or holy folk, and they look or talk to or pray to these tablets or icons all the while by holding them next to their heads or stroking them with fingers and starting only at them, signifying they must be heavy in their despairs to be so consistently looking away from their world and so devoted to their icons.”
I recently had a mini book streak. I read 5 books by 5 different women authors 👩‍💻back to back and all of these were from ones I haven’t really read much before. That makes it a grand total of 16 different women authors so far this year! #sweetsixteen Most of them were hits with 4⭐️ratings and above. Out of this list the authors I will definitely be reading again are Agatha Christie and Jojo Moyes. An exception for me was Ali Smith. I was excited hearing about the Seasonal quarter series by this Scottish author but I was left mostly confused by her prose. Was the excessive rhyming really required? I didn’t add much to the story for me. I loved her chapter on the Brexit vote though. So much left said and unsaid in one page. I've been in a bit of a reading slump these past few days - a mix of being very busy and feeling unwell - but I'm pretty pleased with my latest book haul at the Oxfam charity bookshop in Islington. I've heard a lot of good things about Ali Smith's work but this will be my first one. It's been described as the first "post-Brexit" novel and I have no idea what this means, but will find out! . Even updaten, zegt het kind Paddy. Ze klinkt heel erg zoals zijn denkbeeldige dochter. Kinderen in de mijnen op dit moment, zegt ze, precies op deze minuut, precies om deze 13.04 uur. Je weet dat ze er zijn. Ze delven kobalt voor al die elektrische auto's die zo goed zijn voor het milieu. . Kortom, een boek dat moet bezinken en vraagt om herlezen te worden. Uno dei libri più belli di questo 2019 (insieme a #exitwest #amisuraduomo e #autunno). Winter was my first Ali Smith novel, and I LOVED it! It was one of the most unique books I read this year 😍 I also keep reading reviews about the connection between the stories in the quartet, and I can’t wait to read the other two. . . . While Winter seethed with anger, Spring bursts with fury. As usual, Smith weaves in stories of artists and writers, alludes to Dickens and riffs on Shakespeare, plays with words and uses characters as symbols. Here they're Richard Lease, an aging white man focused on his navel; Brittany Hall, a detainee custody officer at the Immigrant Removal Centre, a woman who's lost her soul; and Florence Smith, a 12-year old immigrant with preternatural ability who gives us hope. Hope. It is Spring's urgent energy and resilient weed. 💐🌷🌱 Most of the events happened in Autumn –when Richard's friend and lover died, when Brittany first heard of Florence, and the three of them converged in Scotland where their stories reached a decisive turn. 🌷🌱💐 Smith's Spring promises the inevitable. Summer is coming and it could mean a deadly deluge or searing heat –the wettest or the driest. What will it be? Such is the impact of Smith's seasonal series to me that I'm anxious to read the finale. 🌱💐🌷 #bookstagram #bookstoread #igreads #goodreads #readersofig #booksofig #instabooks #booknerds #bookworms #bibliophiles #alismith #seasonalquartet #spring #refugees #brexit #immigration #dickens #doubledick #shakespeare
Before spring is suddenly summer, it seemed like a good time to take Ali Smith’s novel Spring from my TBR stack. It’s the third book of her projected quartet (I’ve read Autumn and Winter.) While all three novels cover similar territory — the loss of a soulmate, dysfunctional families, current political chaos — this one focuses on the migrant crisis. Or, in the words of one character early on in the book: “Don’t be calling it migrant crisis...I’ve told you a million times. It’s people.” . I haven’t finished the book yet, but I’m glad I reserved judgement during the book’s blustery beginning. The first few pages made me wonder if I was in store for a 336-page rant. I should have known better. In the masterful hands of #alismith, and through the lives of her complex crew of characters, Spring is about more than what is winter-like in the world — no matter where we live or the season in which we find ourselves. Spring is also about placing our hope and our trust in basic human goodness. I’m interested to see how/if the various stories intersect....so, back to reading. . How about you? What are you reading these days? I hope you’ve been having a good week! 🌹
This book is about nothing. This book is about a lot of things. This book is urgent. This book is trivial. This book is terse. This book is verbose. This book is soothing. This book is thought provoking. This book is astute prose. This book is melodic poetry. 🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂’All across the country, the country was divided, a fence here, a wall there, a line drawn here, a line crossed there, a line you don’t cross here, a line you don’t cross there, a line of beauty here, a line dance there, a line you don’t even know exists here, a line you can’t afford there, a whole new line of Fire, line of battle, end of the line, here/there.’ #bookstagram #bookphotography #booklover #bookshelf #alismith #autumn #alismithautumn #bookshelf #bibliophile #toberead #currentlyreading #bookhaolic #bookhoarder #bookrecommendation #bookreview #igreads #seasonsquartet #seasons

I was reticent about starting a book called Autumn in the middle of June. But after today’s adventures in the cold rain it actually seems incredibly fitting. So many people I know have raved about this series, so I have very high hopes for this one. #mylifeontrains #whatimreading #bookstagram #bookworm #alismith #autumn #penguinbooks #wheredidsummergo
Hello.
What’s on your Summer reading list? My TBR pile is infinite but next I’m targeting some modern classics and the 3rd seasonal quartet from Ali Smith. Can’t wait!
