The original and best: D’Angelo, Brown Sugar (1995). This is one of those records that changed music forever, and created a whole new genre in the process: Neo-soul. A fusion of soul and R&B mixed with elements of hip hop, jazz, funk, and electro, neo-soul was popularised by the likes of Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, and Jill Scott. As you can tell, D’Angelo’s in good company. What I love most about this album is how D’Angelo combines so many of his influences together. You can hear elements of Prince, The Temptations, Sly Stone, Al Green, and Bobby Womack, but all done in a way that D’Angelo makes all his own. Stand out tracks for me are Cruisin, Lady, Brown Sugar, and When We Get By. Voodoo and Black Messiah are AMAZING albums too, but Brown Sugar will always take out the top spot for me.
